Players to Watch:
Armanti Edwards, Sr., Quarterback
Arguably the greatest QB in league history, Edwards excelled again in 2008, moving to the top of the SoCon career lists in total offense (10.783 yards) and touchdown responsibilities (109) while winning the Walter Payton Award. Despite all of his individual numbers, the senior would love nothing more than becoming the first four-time SoCon champion as a starting QB.
Jacque Roman, Sr., Linebacker
Anchoring ASU’s defense again in 2009 will be Roman, a 6-1, 240 pound linebacker from Kingland, Ga., whose 130 tackles in 2008 were a league best. Roman recorded 6.5 tackles for loss and four sacks last season to go along with four fumble recoveries, and he enters this season as the SoCon’s active career leader in tackles with 301.
Preview:
Behind a high-powered, quick-strike offense, Appalachian State rolled through the Southern Conference undefeated in 2008 to win its fourth consecutive league championship. However, for the first time in that span, ASU fell short of its ultimate goal of a national championship, falling in the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs.
Reigning SoCon Players of the Year Armanti Edwards (QB) and Jacque Roman (LB) will lead the Mountaineers again in 2009. ASU also returns seven starters on offense and nine on defense as it looks to become just the second school in league history to win at least five straight conference championships.
In the defensive backfield, junior Mark LeGree equaled a SoCon single-season record in 2008 with 10 interceptions while finishing third in the balloting for the Buck Buchanan Award for national defensive player of the year.
A league-high 17 Mountaineers were named to the league’s preseason all-conference team, including at least one player at every position outside of punter.
ASU will be featured three times on SportSouth’s SoCon Saturday broadcast in addition to televised appearances at East Carolina (Sept. 5) and Furman (Oct.31).
