Furman 3, USC Upstate 0

 

Greenville, S.C. -- Sara El-Shami tallied two assists and goalkeeper Jessica Smith extended her shutout streak to five consecutive matches as Furman blanked USC Upstate 3-0 in non-conference women’s soccer action Monday evening at Stone Stadium.

 

El-Shami, a native of Roswell, Ga., played Martha Hall in behind the Spartan defense in the 28th minute and the sophomore striker finished with her left foot past keeper Brittany Daughtry to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead.  At the 33:48 mark, an attempted clearance by the USC Upstate back line bounced in the path of sophomore Alexa Jones who slotted a shot to the left corner from 16 yards out to up the advantage to 2-0 at the half.

 

Junior Meagan Zusi capped the scoring at 63:14, lining a header into the left-side netting off of a corner kick from El-Shami for the final 3-0 margin.

 

Smith, a sophomore from Franklin, Tenn., recorded four saves to notch her first shutout of the season and stretch her streak of consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to 511:50.  Daughtry notched a career-best 14 saves in the loss for the Spartans.

 

Furman outshot USC Upstate 29-5, including 17-4 on shots on goal.  The Paladins held a 7-0 edge on corner kicks and picked up the only yellow card of the night when freshman Liz Derrick was cautioned in the 44th minute.

 

USC Upstate, 0-2 on the season, returns home to host Gardner-Webb on Friday.  Furman, 1-0, will entertain the Presbyterian College Blue Hose at 7 p.m. on Friday at Stone Soccer Stadium.

 

 

Appalachian State 1, Radford 0 (Exhibition)

 

BOONE, N.C. - Christina Gilboy scored the only goal of the match in the 88th minute off a pass from Ruthie Lile to give Appalachian State University women’s soccer an 1-0 win over Radford Monday night at Appalachian Soccer Stadium.

On the game-winner, Lile took the ball down the left side before centering a pass to Gilboy who knocked it past Radford goalkeeper Lisa Lubke into the right corner of the net.

The Mountaineers started the game on the attack, firing the first five shots of the game.  Taylor Dunlap took a centering pass from Sydney Hill but her tap shot hit the left post.  After the ball was kicked around in front of the goal, Katy Dodd rifled a shot  that was blocked by a Radford defender in front of the goal.

Appalachian keepers Caroline Clarke and Emma White both came up big, the pair combined for eight saves and each made a save by tapping the ball over the net on a high shot.

ASU outshot the Highlanders 14-10 and earned more corner kicks by a 7-4 margin.

The Mountaineers go on the road for the season-opener on Friday, Aug. 28 when they take on Charlotte starting at 7 p.m.
