Players to Watch:

Blue Cooper, Sr., Wide Receiver

One of the toughest receivers in the league, Cooper caught 22 passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns a season ago, despite missing two games with injuries. Cooper’s top performance came with 10 catches for 159 yards and 2 TDs against Cumberland.

Joseph Thornton, Sr., Linebacker

Thornton led the Mocs with 79 tackles in 2008, including 58 solo stops. He recorded 10 tackles against both Appalachian State and Elon, and Thornton finished the season with a pair of tackles for loss against Samford.

Preview:

After finishing winless in SoCon play in 2008, Chattanooga changed head coaches, hiring for UTC defensive back and Richmond defensive coordinator Russ Huesman as the program’s 22nd head coach. At Richmond, Huesman helped lead the Spiders to the 2008 national championship, guiding the defensive unit that surrendered just seven points in the title game.

UTC returns eight starters on each side of the ball, including four of five offensive lineman and a pair of seniors in the backfield. Quarterback Jare Gault is joined by running back Errol Wynn (636 yards) while tailback Bryan Fitzgerald, a preseason all-SoCon selection in 2008, returns after missing last season with a knee injury.

Sophomore Chris Lewis-Harris and junior Buster Srkine, the Mocs’ lone preseason all-SoCon honoree, give Huesman a steady pair of cornerbacks in a league that has become more and more of a passing league over the past few seasons.

Due to penalties imposed as part of the NCAA Academic Performance Program, Chattanooga is ineligible for the FCS playoffs in 2009 and thus, also ineligible for the SoCon championship.
