The Citadel Football Fall Camp Report: Day Four
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Football returned to the field for day four and the second day of split practice of fall camp on Tuesday at the Maybank Triplets Practice Facility at Willson Field. The Bulldogs worked out for three-hours-and-thirty minutes for a total of 40 periods. There were no injuries reported.
With the veterans out first followed by the rookies, Bulldog Head Coach Kevin Higgins said this split routine allowed the coaches to get a better evaluation of the younger players. Both groups completed two sessions of pass skeleton followed by four periods of team thud. Tuesday's practice emphasis was on the perimeter run. Two field goal blocks were also introduced as well as a new punt return.
The Citadel will return to the practice field on Wednesday for their first day of full pads at the Maybank Triplets Practice Facility at 8 a.m.
Rain Fails To Dampen Tuesday Furman Practice Results
Kickoff Return Team Emphasized
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Despite a 45-minute rain delay in the middle of Tuesday's football practice, the Furman Paladins fashioned a productive session in the first day in shorts, shoulder pads, and helmets, according to head coach Bobby Lamb.
"Anytime you start to put on another level of gear, the enthusiasm is going to rise, and it did today," said Lamb following his squad's third practice of the preseason. "The shoulder pads allow your linemen to get more involved, which is always good."
Tuesday's session included 20 plays of 11-on-11 work and heavy emphasis on the kickoff return team. The mid-practice shower precluded additional special teams work.
"We were last in the Southern Conference in kickoff returns last year (17.0 avg.), and obviously we'd like to change that. It will continue to get a lot of our attention over the next couple of weeks."
A number of players did not participate in the two and a half hour workout due to injuries, including tight end Chris Truss, and wide receivers Tyler Maples and Adam Mims, who are sidelined with mild hamstring strains. Kyle McKinney (foot) and Shaun van Rensburg (knee), Furman's two projected starting defensive ends, have yet to take part in preasons drills. Their absence has allowed four young players, including three true freshmen, to gain reps.
"With Kyle and Shaun out, Josh Lynn, Rashaun Phillips, Ricky Lang, and Derrick Parrea, are getting in a lot of quality work, which will ultimately put them ahead of the game. Two or three of those guys are going to have to play for us this year."
Fullback Jacob Longoria (knee) exited practice due to injury.
Lamb singled out the work of true freshman tailback Jerodis Williams, saying, "Jerodis looks a lot like Mike Brown out there. We think he's got a chance to be a good one."

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford football team practiced twice Tuesday at Seibert Stadium. Tuesday was the Bulldogs' first two-a-day workouts of fall practice.
Samford held a morning practice in full pads, which lasted about two hours. Head Coach Pat Sullivan said the team worked well in its first day of two practices.
"I thought this morning in pads was pretty good," Sullivan said. "I was pleased with our work today, it worked out just right."
In the afternoon practice, the team worked in shells. The second practice of the day was cut short due to inclement weather.
"I thought we had two good practices," Sullivan said. "This afternoon, we had to cut it a little short with the rain, but I thought it was a good day."
The Bulldogs will practice again Wednesday morning in full pads. Wednesday's practice is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. The team will practice twice on Thursday, with practices scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Samford's first scrimmage of the fall will be held Saturday, Aug. 15. The scrimmage is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Seibert Stadium.
ASU Football Fall Camp Report: Tuesday, August 11
BOONE, N.C. ? Appalachian State University football strapped on full pads for the first time this fall on Tuesday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
With it being the fifth practice of the year, Tuesday was the first day that NCAA regulations permits players to don full pads. Luckily for the Mountaineers, most of the two-hour-and-45-miute practice was held under overcast skies, which gave temporary relief from the balmy conditions that have been a staple of camp to this point.
With the squad in full pads, the customary 11-on-11 work near the end of practice took on some added intrigue. The highlights included:
? an impressive showing by quarterback DeAndre Presley. The sophomore displayed accuracy and a strong arm throughout the afternoon, most notably on a string of four completions in five attempts for 82 yards early in the 11-on-11 sessions.
? wide receiver Brian Quick serving as Presley’s primary target. The 6-5 sophomore hauled in a 12-yard pass from Presley on the right sideline and turned in perhaps the play of the day when he caught a pass over the middle, bounced off several would-be tacklers, found daylight on the right side and took it in for a 45-yard touchdown.
? Presley’s near-perfect day ruined by sophomore cornerback Ed Gainey, who stepped in front of a pass intended for Tavaris Washington and returned the interception to paydirt.
? a terrific catch by true freshman Jamill Lott on a pass from Presley over the middle, which was immediately followed by a big hit from senior linebacker Jacque Roman. Lott held onto the ball for a 10-yard gain.
? a good afternoon from senior receiver CoCo Hillary. He imitated Quick’s bowling-ball routine by shedding a tackle en route to a 24-yard gain early in the period and used his speed to out-race defenders to the end zone on a 25-yard pass from Travaris Cadet.
? Cadet on the front end of a nice pitch-and-catch to true freshman Tony Washington, who balanced to stay in bounds on the left sideline despite tight coverage.
? pass break-ups on back-to-back plays late in the session by junior defensive end Jabari Fletcher and freshman defensive back Dominique McDuffie.
Appalachian holds its first two-a-day practices of the year on Wednesday.
