WCU Women's Golfers Elin Mickelsson, Rachel Nelson Named NGCA Academic Scholars
Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's golfers Elin Mickelsson and Rachel Nelson were today named All-American Scholars by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). Mickelsson, a rising senior, holds a 3.759 grade point average while majoring in Accounting. Nelson, who just completed her freshman season at WCU, is majoring in Nutrition and boasts a 3.785 GPA.
WCU has had at least one women's golfer recognized by the organization in each of the last nine years with Mickelsson garnering her third-consecutive honor. Two former Catamounts - Brandy Andersen (2002-06) and Bianca Melone (2003-07) - garnered the plaudit all four years at Western with Mickelsson becoming just the third to earn the recognition three-or-more times.
A combined 410 women's golfers spanning all three levels of NCAA women's golf were honored with the prestigious honor. The criteria for inclusion, which is among the most stringent in college athletics, includes a minimum cumulate grade point average of 3.50 with competition in at least 50-percent of the team's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Nelson ranked fourth on the squad in scoring, averaging 79.96 through 10 events during her rookie campaign. The West Chester, Ohio, native posted her career-best finish (t-19th) at the WCU co-hosted Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate in Morganton, N.C.
Hampered by injuries during both the fall and spring seasons, Mickelsson only saw action in five of the squad's 10 events, posting a stroke average of 81.42. The Gavle, Sweden, native did, however, record her career-best finish by firing consecutive career-low tying rounds of 71 to finish tied for fourth at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
Kenoyer Named To NGCA All-American Scholar Team
Greenville, S.C. -- Furman’s Stefanie Kenoyer has been named to the 2009 National Golf Coaches Association’s Scholar All-American Team, it was announced earlier this week by the NGCA.
Kenoyer, a rising junior, captured her second straight Southern Conference title in April while leading the Paladins to the league crown and NCAA Regional berth. She paced the SoCon with a 74.0 stroke average to earn league player of the year honors.
In June, Kenoyer posted rounds of 73-75=148 at the Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill., to earn a spot in the 2009 United States Women’s Open which is set to begin July 9, at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Lighthouse Point, Fla., native also advanced through two rounds of stroke play and the opening round of match play to the round of 32 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links during the month of June. A member of the SoCon’s Spring Academic All-Conference Team, Kenoyer sports a 3.90 GPA in political science.
Creed, Aidemark named to NGCA All-Scholar squad
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. ? Sofia Aidemark and Erica Creed are among 410 female student-athletes named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Teams.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50% (Division I) or 66% (Division II & III) of the college’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Aidemark, who was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District at-large selection, is a native of Laholm, Sweden. A senior next season, she had a 3.96 GPA in communication studies. She was UNCG’s low scorer for the season with a
77.97 average. She appeared in all 10 tournaments, logging three Top 20 finishes to raise her career total to six. She was a Dean’s List student in the fall and spring semester and made the Chancellor’s List for the fourth straight semester in the spring. She has also been on the Athletic Director’s honor roll all six semesters.
Creed, who will be a junior next season, is a native of Kernersville, N.C.
She was second on the team in scoring last year with a 78.38 average. She appeared in all 10 tournaments, with a pair of Top 10 finishes, including a third-place finish at the Starmount Fall Classic, to give her five Top 10 finishes in 20 career starts. Also a communications studies major, she has a 3.54 GPA and has earned a spot on the Athletic Director’s honor roll all four semesters.
