ELON, N.C. ? Elon incoming freshmen Nicholas Butterly and Gabe Latigue will participate in the 2009 North Carolina East-West All-Star Soccer Game to be held on Tuesday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. Butterly, a 6-1, 175-pound center back, and Latigue, a 5-9, 150-pound midfielder, will join forces on the East Team.
“We look forward to seeing Gabe and Nick play in this prestigious event,” said Elon head men’s soccer coach Darren Powell. “With the season just around the corner, an additional game for these two should help them in their preparations for their arrival on campus to join the Elon Phoenix team.”
A team captain at Green Hope High in 2007 and 2008, Butterly earned all-conference honors as a junior and a senior. He played club soccer for Rusty Scarborough, helping CASL Chelsea Academy to four consecutive state cups from 2004-2007. Butterly also helped lead the squad to back-to-back titles at the Disney Showcase event in 2007 and 2008.
Latigue, a 2008 NSCAA All-South Region selection, helped lead Panther Creek to a conference crown in his final season. Latigue was a three-time all-conference pick, while earning first team all-region honors and first team all-state distinction on two occasions. He was also named the 2008 Tri-8 4A Conference Player of the Year. In addition to his accolades at Panther Creek, Latigue helped Dan Popik’s Triangle Futbol Club to a 2008 state title.
