TUSCON, Ariz. ? Western Carolina outfielder/second baseman Ross Heffley and College of Charleston right-hander David Peterson have been named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team, it was announced on Wednesday.
Heffley, the consensus 2009 SoCon Freshman of the Year, finished his rookie campaign with a .391 batting average to go along with 18 doubles and 41 RBIs. He helped lead the Catamounts to a 35-22 overall record and fourth-place SoCon regular season finish while starting all but one game.
Peterson, who helped the Cougars to a 35-22 record this season, posted a 7-3 mark with a 5.73 ERA over 13 starting assignments. He was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman squad and twice earned Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.
Peterson struck out 47 and walked only 15 over 77 innings. He had one complete-game, a 5-0 four-hit, shutout of Wofford on May 10.
