Lady Mocs in Top Eight Heading into Final Round

COLUMBUS, Ohio---The Chattanooga women’s golf team is just in the position it wants to be in roughly 24 hours, eighth place at NCAA Central Regional on the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.  The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Finals at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.

 

Day two was kind to the Chattanooga women’s golf team as early intermittent light rain gave way to cloud cover as the Lady Mocs shot 299 (+11).  For the second straight day, UTC shot the best score of its wave and it was the seventh best on Friday.

 

The 299 gives the Lady Mocs a 36-hole total of 602 (+26).  Chattanooga holds the coveted eighth-place position by six shots over Georgia State and Washington and is just three strokes behind host No. 24 Ohio State at 599 (+23).

 

“We are in the proper position,” said Head Coach Colette Murray.  “It’s the same as yesterday in that we haven’t accomplished anything, rather given ourselves the opportunity to advance.

 

“I’m proud of the effort.”

 

No. 2 UCLA continues to lead the way after a two-over par 290 in the second round moves it to two-under par 574 overall.  No. 9 Purdue shot the low round of the day with a 289 (+1) to remain in second place at 584 (+8).  No. 5 Oklahoma State (589), No. 11 Wake Forest (593), No. 19 Michigan State (595) and New Mexico (597) rank third through six with the Lobos sitting two shots ahead of the Buckeyes and five clear of the Lady Mocs.

 

The Bruins duo of Stephanie Kono and Maria Jose Uribe continue to lead individually after twin 70s (-2) place each at five-under par 139.  Maude-Aimee LeBlanc is just one shot back at 140 (-4) after a 69 of her own.

 

Maria Salinas was the story of the day.  After an opening round 80, Salinas was three-over par through six holes when a birdie at the par three eighth gave her a little momentum.  She played the final 12 holes at three-under par to shoot an even-par 72.

 

Salinas birdied eight, 15 and 18 to go with her 12 pars on the day.  No. 15 played as the sixth hardest hole in the opening round.  She is tied for 37th with six players, including teammate Emma de Groot, at 152.

 

Moa Duf played another solid two-over par round of 74 with a team-high 13 pars on the day.  She had birdies at five and 14 to offset two bogeys and a double bogey on the par five sixth.  Duf is tied for 13th in the tournament at 148 (+4), pacing the Lady Mocs.

 

de Groot birdied the ninth to go out at even par 36.  A double bogey at 17 gave her a 40 on the back side to shoot 76 (+4).  That was one shot ahead of Christine Wolf who came in at 77 (+5).

 

Wolf scored birdies at nine and 14 again today to go with nine pars and seven bogeys as she managed her way around the course and in now tied for 44th at nine-over par 153, one shot behind Salinas and de Groot.  Maria Juliana Loza struggled with an 81 (+9), but she did have the shot of the day holing out for eagle on the par four 15th hole.  She is tied for 77th at 158 (+14).

 

The Lady Mocs played the front nine at six-over par while coming in on the back nine at five-over for the 11-over par score of 299.  For the two rounds, Chattanooga has played the front side at plus 12, while playing the back nine at 14 over.

 

Maju Loza will lead the Lady Mocs off of No. 1 at 9 a.m., Saturday morning.  She will be followed by Wolf, Salinas, de Groot and Duf.  Chattanooga will be paired with Ohio State and Georgia State.

 

 

 

Furman Fires Second Round Best 290; Climbs To 10th At NCAA East Regional

 

Gainesville, Fla. -- The Furman women’s golf team fired the low round of the day, 10-over par 290, to climb into 10th place after two rounds at the NCAA East Regional at the University of Florida’s par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course on Friday.

 

The Paladins (305-290=595) trail eighth place Georgia (297-295=592) by just three strokes entering Saturday’s final round in the 54-hole tournament.  The top eight teams and top two individuals not on an advancing team will move on to the NCAA Championship May 19-22, at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.

 

Alabama (284-291=575) holds an eight-stroke lead over second place Denver and 10-stroke edge on Vanderbilt and Tennessee who enter Saturday’s final round tied for third.  Virginia, Tulane, Duke, Georgia, North Carolina and Furman round out the top 10 in the 21-team field.

 

The Paladins, who opened the round in a tie for 14th place, benefited from rounds of even-par 70 from senior Blair Lamb (73-70=143) and sophomore Jackie Hilea (75-70=145).  Lamb shot a 35 on both the front and back nine to grab a share of eighth place just four strokes behind individual Camilla Lennarth of Alabama.  Hilea notched three birdies to hold a piece of 16th place entering the final 18 holes.

 

Sophomore Stefanie Kenoyer, the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month, carded a second round 71 to move into 24th place at seven-over 147.

 

Saturday’s final round is set to tee-off at 7:30 a.m.  Furman, playing with East Carolina and South Carolina, will begin its round at 8:30 a.m. from the No. 10 tee.

CofC Women's Golf tied for 19th after Second Round of NCAA East Regional

 

Gainesville, Fla. - The College of Charleston women's golf team fired a 310 in the second round to finish 36 holes with a 612 and sit tied for 19th at the NCAA East Regional being held May 7-9 at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.  Alabama sits atop the leaderboard with a two-round total of 575.  Denver follows eight strokes back in second.

 

Camilla Lennarth of the Crimson Tide leads the tournament with a 139.  Vanderbilt's Marina Alex and Tennessee's Nathalie Mansson are tied for second with a 141.

 

Courtney Brink (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) leads the Cougars and is tied for 59th with a 152.  Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) is tied for 75th along with Steffi Kirchmayr (Pocking, Germany) with a 154 each.  Fiona Puyo (Pau, France) is tied for 81st with a 155 and tied for 95th is Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.) with her 162 in two rounds.

 

The top eight teams from the 54-hole regional will advance to the NCAA Finals which will be held May 19-22 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.

 

The Cougars tee off from hole one beginning at 12:40 p.m. Saturday in third and final round action.
