Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Robert Jeroszko (Greenville, S.C.) pitched a complete-game and Joey Bergman (Jacksonville, Fla.) belted two homers and drove in a career-high six runs leading the College of Charleston to a 10-3 win over Charleston Southern in the opener of a twinight doubleheader before 382 at Patriots Point Stadium on Wednesday. The Cougars completed the sweep with a 5-2 win in the nightcap.
With the sweep, the Cougars improved to 32-16. The Cougars have won seven in a row and nine of their last 10 games overall. Charleston completed its four-game season sweep of the Buccaneers, who fell to 15-31. Charleston begins a three-game Southern Conference series at Wofford on Friday at 7 p.m. CSU plays host to USC Upstate at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Bergman hit a two-run homer to left center in the first that tied the game at 2-2. Bergman added a three-run homer to left in the second inning to give Charleston a 7-2 lead.
Joash Brodin (Olympia, Wash.) capped Charleston's first inning with a two-run homer to right to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead. For the Bucs, Patrick Dolan hit a two-run homer in the first and Jake Cox added a solo shot to left in the fifth inning.
Bergman and Ryan Daniels (Victoria, Tex.) led Charleston with three hits each.
Jeroszko (3-0) picked up the winn allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts over seven innings. Anthony Markham (2-6) allowed seven runs on seven hits over the first three innings.
In the second game, Daniels drove in the game's first run in the fourth inning with a two-out, run-scoring single to left. In the sixth inning, Brandon Sizemore (Jacksonville, Fla.), and Brodin had RBI doubles to give Charleston a 3-0 sixth inning advantage. Rakar added a two-out, two-run double to left center scored Brodin and pinch-runner Thomas Brittle to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead.
Derek Smith's two-run homer to center in the seventh inning cut Charleston's lead to 5-2.
Casey Lucchese (Lexington, Ky.) picked up the win and improved to 1-1. Lucchese surrendered two runs on five hits over the first 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three. Curtis Dowling (Columbia, S.C.) recorded the final two outs for his first save of the season. Jesse Cadenhead (4-4) suffered the loss.
Virginia Tech 11, Davidson 5 (8 inn.)
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Virginia Tech used five runs in the sixth inning to take control and held on for an 11-5 victory over the Davidson Wildcats in a rain-shortened game Wednesday night at Wilson Field in non-conference play.
Rain bothered the flow of the game all night, bumping the original start time back an hour before finally forcing an early end. A three-run home run by Virginia Tech's Anthony Sosnoskie in the top of the ninth was erased when, after a 30-minute lightning delay, the game was suspended.
Davidson (18-26) scored the first run as James Cerbie, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored easily as Brett Shore legged out a triple in the second.
Virginia Tech (28-20) got the run back in the top of the third on an RBI-double from Sosnoskie, but the 'Cats reclaimed the lead with a run in the bottom half. Drew Gadaire hit a one-out double down the left field line. He moved to third as Danny Weiss singled to second and scored on a throwing error by second baseman Michael Seaborn.
The Hokies took the lead with a three-run home run by Chris Kay, but the Wildcats knotted the score with three runs in the fifth. Zach Kayne hit his ninth home run of the season to lead off the frame, before Gadaire followed with a base hit. He took second as Chase FitzPatrick reached safely on a fielding error at third and scored on Cerbie's second hit of the night, a double down the left field line. Jay Honeycutt's sacrifice bunt scored FitzPatrick to tie the game, but Seth Freeman struck out to strand a runner.
Virginia Tech, though, opened the game up with five runs on five hits in the sixth, including a pair of two-RBI home runs by Sosnoskie and Seaborn, and added two more in the eighth to reach the final, 11-5.
The game was delayed for lightning after the Hokies added three more runs in the top of the ninth, but the inning was erased as the game was officially suspended.
Chris Lamb (1-4) took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing five runs on seven hits in two innings of relief for starter Chris Kennedy.
Starter Marc Zecchino earned the win for the Hokies, surrendering five runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out five in five innings.
The Wildcats posted 10 hits, lead at the plate by Shore, who batted 3-for-4 and just a home run shy of the cycle. Gadaire and Cerbie each had two hits.
Virginia Tech had 14 hits on the evening, led at the plate by Klint Reed (4-for-5, RBI) and Kaminski (3-for-5, 2 RBI).
Davidson will take a weekend off before hosting Western Carolina in the final regular-season series May 14-16.
USC Upstate 6, The Citadel 3
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Matt Simonelli went 3-for-4 with a run scored but The Citadel couldn’t overcome an early five-run deficit as USC Upstate upended the Bulldogs, 6-3, in front of 747 at Riley Park Wednesday afternoon.
The Citadel (28-19) allowed USC Upstate (12-33) to score five runs over the first two innings to create a deficit the Bulldogs would be unable to recover from.
Matt Reifsnider (1-2) took the loss in his second start of the year after allowing five runs on eight hits while walking one. Zach Garrett allowed only one run on four hits in 3.1 innings in relief, walking two and striking out one.
Dennis McCraney (3-1) earned the win after allowing only three runs on 10 hits but failed to record a strikeout. Teddy Fallon (1) was credited with his first save of the season after holding The Citadel hitless in the final 3.1 innings.
Kyle Simpson led off for USC Upstate the first with a triple down the right field line. Eric Guillen singled up the middle to drive Simpson in to give Upstate the 1-0 lead. Jimmy Tanner reached on a fielder’s choice as Guillen was put out at second. Phillip Morgan then singled through the right side, sending Tanner to second. Austin Moyer drew a walk to load the bases but Blake Greene grounded into the double play to end the threat.
In the top of the second, a Ryan Wilkins triple led of a stretch of five consecutive hits in an inning that saw the Spartans score four runs on six hits while leaving the bases loaded for the second consecutive inning.
The Citadel got on the board in the bottom of the third as Sid Fallaw led the inning off with a single through the right side. Consecutive bunts for hits by Kyle Jordan and Nick Orvin loaded the bases for the Bulldogs and a sacrifice fly by Bryan Altman scored Fallaw. The Citadel threat ended quickly as Sonny Meade grounded into a double play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Simonelli hit a two-out single up the middle and then promptly stole second. David Greene doubled to left field to score Simonelli but a Fallaw groundout would give the Bulldogs three outs, ending the inning.
After USC Upstate added a run in the fifth as Ryan Wilkins scored on a wild pitch, giving the Spartans a 6-2 lead. The Bulldogs would respond in the bottom half of the inning as Jordan would score on an RBI groundout by Nick Orvin, cutting the Upstate lead to 6-3.
The Citadel would strand five runners on base over the next four innings but could not get a run across the plate.
The Citadel returns to action on Thursday, May 7 with the start of a Southern Conference series at Furman in Greenville. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
FURMAN-CLEMSON BASEBALL POSTPONED; RESCHEDULED FOR MONDAY AT 4:00 P.M.
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman’s Wednesday baseball game against Clemson has been postponed due to stormy weather in the Upstate and rescheduled for Monday, May 11 at 4:00 p.m. at Fluor Field, Paladin head coach Ron Smith has announced.
Furman (21-23, 9-15 SoCon) will open a three-game Southern Conference series against The Citadel (28-18, 14-10 SoCon) on Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Latham Stadium. Friday’s game is a 3:00 p.m. start, and Sunday’s finale is set for 1:00 p.m.
The Paladins are currently in eighth place in the Southern Conference standings, a game and a half ahead of both Samford (9-18 SoCon) and Wofford (7-16 SoCon). Eight teams qualify for the SoCon Tournament, scheduled for May 20-24 at Flour Field.
Wofford Baseball Game Against South Carolina Cancelled
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford baseball game scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:00 pm against the University of South Carolina has been cancelled due to inclement weather.
With Wofford having exams next week and only one week left in both Wofford and South Carolina’s regular seasons, the game will not be rescheduled. All tickets sold for the game can be used for all of the three games this weekend against the College of Charleston. That series will begin on Friday at 7:00 pm and continue on Saturday at 3:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm.
