SoCon Announces Regular Season Softball Award Winners

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston third baseman Kristie Shifflett has been named Southern Conference Player of the Year while Georgia Southern pitcher Brianna Streetmon has been tabbed Pitcher of the Year to highlight the league’s annual regular season award winners, which were announced Tuesday. The conference’s nine head coaches voted on all the awards.

Georgia Southern won two of the four individual awards. Along with Streetmon, outfielder Marie Fogle was named the league’s Freshman of the Year.

Chattanooga Head Coach Frank Reed won his second consecutive and third overall Coach of the Year award.

Shifflett finished the regular season in the top five in the league in several major offensive categories including batting average (.366), slugging percentage (.642), home runs (9) and RBIs (41).

Streetmon led all SoCon pitchers in ERA (2.05) and wins (14) while appearing in 34 games and pitching 160.1 innings.

Fogle fashioned a solid freshman campaign by batting .330 with 37 hits.

Reed led his team to its third-straight regular season crown despite losing preseason Pitcher of the Year Brooke Loudermilk for much of the non-conference slate and preseason All-Conference member Laci Upchurch for the entire season. The Lady Mocs finished 26-22 overall including a 15-5 SoCon record.

The Lady Mocs tied with Georgia Southern for the most All-Conference honorees. Each had six first and second team selections. UTC was led by sophomore Michelle Fuzzard, who garnered first team honors at first base and second team honors as a pitcher.

Co-regular season runner-ups College of Charleston and Appalachian State had four and three honorees, respectively. Furman also had three, while Western Carolina, UNC Greensboro and Samford each had one player selected.

The Eagles and Bulldogs each had two players selected to the 10-member All-Freshman team, while the Mountaineers, Cougars, Paladins, Spartans, Lady Mocs and Catamounts each had one.
