The Citadel’s Richard Jones Named to Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball All-America Second Team
TUCSON, Ariz. ? The Citadel catcher Richard Jones was honored Thursday as he was named the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball All-America Second Team after a remarkable season. Jones was the highest Southern Conference student-athlete honored on the All-America teams.
Jones completed his junior season with a .378 batting average, hitting 95-for-251 as he scored 54 runs. His 69 RBI on the year ranks tied for third in The Citadel’s single-season record books. Jones had 19 doubles and two triples on the year while tying The Citadel’s single-season home run record with 17 home runs, including two in the final game of the season in the Southern Conference Tournament.
Jones was one of only two Southern Conference student-athletes honored by Louisville Slugger and Collegiate Baseball newspaper with All-America accolades as College of Charleston’s Joey Bergman was named to the third team.
This marks the second time that Jones has received All-America accolades from Louisville Slugger and Collegiate Baseball, garnering Freshman All-America honors after the 2007 season. He becomes only the third player in The Citadel’s history to receive second team honors, joining the ranks of Philip Hartig (2000) and Randy Corn (2001). No Bulldog has ever received first team honors from Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball.
College of Charleston’s Joey Bergman Named Louisville Slugger All-American
Charleston, S.C. -- College of Charleston junior third baseman Joey Bergman (Jacksonville, Fla.) has been named to the third team Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American baseball squad, it was announced by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Bergman, who was named the Southern Conference’s Player of the Year, helped the Cougars to a 35-22 record this spring. Bergman leads the Southern Conference with a .452 batting average. He added 15 homers, 57 RBI, 25 doubles and 24 stolen bases in 26 attempts.
Bergman leads the nation and set the SoCon’s single-season record with 88 runs scored. He also leads the nation with a .551 on base percentage and is second in batting average.
