SoCon Baseball Championship Central

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The bracket has been set for the 2009 Southern Conference Baseball Championship, and regular season champion Elon will be the tournament’s top seed for the second consecutive season. The event will be held May 20-24 at Fluor Field at the West End in Greenville, S.C.

 

After starting conference play with a 6-4 mark, Elon reeled off 17 consecutive SoCon victories to finish 23-4 in league play and claim its second straight regular season title. The Phoenix, which won the 2008 SoCon Tournament, will face the tournament’s No. 8 seed and hometown team, Furman (10-20), at 5 p.m. ET Wednesday, May 20 in first round play.

 

The tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning as second-seeded Georgia Southern (20-8) faces No. 7 seed Davidson.

 

The winner of the Eagles-Wildcats matchup will face the winner of Wednesday’s second game between No. 3 seed The Citadel (20-10) and No. 6 seed Appalachian State (15-13).

 

Following Elon and Furman, the final first round game will pit No. 4 seed Western Carolina (19-10) against No. 5 seed College of Charleston (17-13) at 9 p.m.

 

The top eight teams in the final Southern Conference standings qualified for the tournament, which features a modified double-elimination bracket producing a single-elimination championship game at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 24. The championship game will be televised by SportSouth on tape delay at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening. The tournament winner earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championships.
