SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston third baseman Joey Bergman has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while teammate David Peterson has been chosen as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from May 4-10.
Bergman hit .632 with four homers and 12 RBIs as the Cougars went 5-0 on the week, stretching their season-best win streak to 10 games. Bergman scored 11 runs, including four in an 18-2 win at Wofford on Friday, and he now has a 14-game hitting streak. The junior from Jacksonville, Fla., had two homers and a career-best six RBIs in CofC's 10-3 win over Charleston Southern on Wednesday. Bergman, the SoCon’s leading hitter this season with a .467 average, had five hits and four RBIs, including a homer, in CofC's 24-7 win over Wofford on Saturday.
Peterson, a right-hander, needed just 108 pitches to improve to 7-2 on the season by throwing a complete-game shutout at Wofford on Sunday. A freshman from Walnut Creek, Calif., Peterson allowed only four hits, all singles, while walking two and striking out four. Only two Wofford runners reached second base on the day.
The award is Peterson’s second of the season, as he was also honored as Pitcher of the Week on March 9.
The SoCon’s weekly awards are voted on by the league’s baseball sports information directors.
Other hitters earning consideration for the award were Georgia Southern’s Phillip Porter, Elon’s Pat Irvine, Appalachian State’s Rand Smith, The Citadel’s Sonny Meade and Wofford’s Mac Doyle.
Other pitchers nominated were The Citadel’s Wes Wrenn, UNC Greensboro’s Blake Hassebrock, Georgia Southern’s Chris Mederos and Elon’s Ken Ferrer.
