Appalachian State
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Appalachian State University men's and women's track and field continued with its solid performances Friday evening as numerous Mountaineers posted impressive performances at the UNC Chick Fil-A meet.
In the high jump, sophomore Rebecca Hazeltine finished third overall and jumped 5-7.
Freshman Dennis Moore was strong in the 100-meter and 200-meter, placing eighth in the 100 with a time of 10.87, and coming in seventh in the 200 with a new personal best time of 21.40. Phillip Bush came in 28th in the 200 dash, with a time of 22.65.
John Svoboda finished seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.97 a new personal best time in the event.
Daniel Neal took home 10th and 13th-place finishes in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles, with marks of 14.58 and 54.41.
Freshman Darius Purcell posted one of the most impressive outings of the afternoon, notching a first-place mark in the high jump with a new personal best leap of 6-11. The leap keeps him at sixth on Appalachian's all-time list in the event.
In the pole vault, Matt Boruff and Mike Wilson vaulted 15-7 and 15-1 good enough for 13th and 17th-place finishes.
In the throwing events, Malcolm Styers notched an eighth-place finish in the shot put while Jared Stalling came in tenth.
Jered Gardner paced ASU in the discus with a ninth-place showing with a throw of 152-9, while Stalling, Styers and Caleb Poplin placed 11th, 14th and 17th respectively.
Styers was also strong in the hammer, earning a runner-up spot with a toss of 179-2, while Stalling came in eighth with a throw of 159-8.
The Apps return to action Friday May 15, as they head to the last chance meet at Georgia Tech.
Appalachian State
DURHAM, N.C. ? Senior Jennifer Povick was the lone Mountaineer to compete at the Duke Twilight track and field invitational over the weekend, and posted a standout performance as she came in third overall in the 800-meter run.
The Charleston, W. Va., native ran a personal best time of 2:09.26 in the event, helping her to earn her first ever NCAA qualifying mark and moving her into second on Appalachian's all-time list in the event behind ASU great Mary Jayne Harrelson who holds the school record with a mark of 2:03.10. Povick's previous personal best in the event was 2:10.94 and was recorded a week earlier at the SoCon Championships.
The Citadel
Clemson, S.C. ? Jodi Whittle won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.11 as two Bulldogs competed in the Orange and Purple Classic at Rock Norman Track in Clemson, S.C., on Saturday, May 9.
Whittle also finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.97. She is now second all-time in The Citadel’s top 10 lists. Jamel Brown ran a time of 54.14 to finish fifth in the 400-meter hurdles and he placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.76.
Davidson
DURHAM, N.C. - In the final meet of his collegiate career, senior Alex Hoyt set a new personal-best time in the 5,000-meter run at the Duke Twilight over the weekend at Wallace Wade Stadium on the campus of Duke University.
Hoyt, who was running unattached, tripped the tape in 14:57.26, which was the fourth-fastest time in school history at the 5,000 and gave Hoyt a fourth-place finish in the event.
Also finishing in the top ten was freshman Charlie Schmitt, who ran unattached and brought home a tenth-place finish in a time of 15:13.62.
Furman
Clemson, S.C. - Furman senior Patrick Morgan finished third in the 800-meter run at the Orange and Purple Classic on the campus of Clemson University on Saturday afternoon. Morgan was the lone Paladin competing in the meet as he aimed for an NCAA qualifying time.
Morgan crossed the finish line in 1:52.70, just off the top time of 1:52.37. Morgan's time was the second-best among the field as Dreyfus Clemons of Morehouse and Will Noble of Clemson tied for first place in the event. Having competed primarily in distance events this outdoor season, Morgan was running the 800 for the first time this year after winning the event at the Southern Conference Championships in 2008. He holds a personal-best time of 1:51.73 in the 800m. The NCAA regional qualifying time is 1:50.40.
UNC Greensboro
DURHAM, NC ? Freshman Joey Thompson shattered the school record in the 5,000-meter run by over two seconds to lead UNC Greensboro at the Duke Twilight meet on Sunday evening.
Thompson continued his impressive freshman campaign by running the 5,000 in a time of 14:50.17. His time broke the previous school record, set by Xavier Rutz in 2007, by 2.71 seconds.
TJ Wyatt, fresh off being named All-SoCon in the 800 meters last weekend, finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.92. His time was second-best in school history, just 1.19 seconds from breaking the school record. The time was also the fastest on the team this season.
On the women’s side, Tiffany Garber set the fastest time of the season for the team in the 5,000. Her time of 18:32.40 was the fourth-best time in school history as well and was also the fastest on the team this season by four seconds.
The Spartans will continue competition in order to qualify for the NCAA Regionals next weekend as they compete at the UNC Last Chance on Friday afternoon.
UNC Greensboro
CHAPEL HILL, NC ? TJ Wyatt finished in 12th place in the 800-meter run at the UNC Elite on Friday evening in Chapel Hill as the lone competitor for UNC Greensboro.
Wyatt, who was looking to reach a qualifying mark for the NCAA Regionals, ran a time of 1:53.51 in the 800 meters. His time was just a few seconds away from qualifying for the NCAA Regionals and was the second-fastest time on the team this season in that event.
The Spartans return to action next weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Samford
CLEMSON, S.C. ---- Cori Christensen, Thomas Oliver and Patrick Wells won their respective events at Clemson's Orange and Purple Classic Saturday while Cavan Corcoran and Oliver set personal bests. The Bulldogs are preparing for the NCAA Mideast Regional at the end of this month.
Christensen won the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.71 while Hillary Neal followed in second with a time of 2:15.69.
Oliver won the men's javelin with a personal best toss of 194-05 while Wells won his fifth pole vault competition of the outdoor season clearing a height of 16-00.75.
Corcoran placed eighth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.89 while Donald Cooper took ninth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.22.
The Bulldogs will run in the IC4A at Princeton next week as they continue preparations for the NCAA Mideast Regional on May 29-30.
Chattanooga
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- Chattanooga sophomore distance runner Chris Berry placed second in the mile run at the Smokey Mountain Twilight at the Tom Black Track Tuesday night.
Berry finished second in the Mile Run with a time of 4:12.05, missing an automatic NCAA region berth. Freshman Josh Vasquez placed seventh for the Mocs with a time of 4:18.25.
In the 800-meter run, Blake Ketron edged his personal best with a time of 1:54.12 placing fifth overall. Teammate Michael Danehy was sixth finishing with a time of 1:56.31.
The Outdoor Track teams will be heading to the University of Georgia on Saturday, May 9 for the Georgia Invitational in preparation for the NCAA Region meet.
