Lady Mocs Advance to NCAA Finals
COLUMBUS, Ohio---In just its second year of competition, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s golf team has earned its way into the NCAA Finals with a top eight finish at the Central Regional on the Scarlet Course Saturday afternoon. The Lady Mocs shot a final round 320 (+32) to hold off Georgia State and Washington for the eighth and final berth into the finals.
It was a battle with wind throughout the day. Gusts up to 40 miles per hour were reported during play throughout the day wreaking havoc with scoring.
In fact, at the time of this writing, teams are still on the course. The adverse conditions do not give hope to the teams still competing. N.C. State and No. 15 Louisville are eight shots off the pace with seven holes to play. For final results go here.
No. 2 UCLA won the top spot with a 13-over par total of 877. The Bruins shot the low round of the day which was 303 (+15). No. 9 Purdue (896), No. 11 Wake Forest (899), No. 5 Oklahoma State (901), No. 19 Michigan State (905), New Mexico (912) and No. 24 Ohio State (917) all advance to the finals with Chattanooga.
UCLA’s Maria Jose Uribe claimed medalist honors at four-under par 212 after a 73 (+1) today. She edged teammate Stephanie Kono (-3, 213) by one shot, while New Mexico’s Jodi Ewert finished third at 215 (-1). Ewert and Michigan State’s Lindsey Solberg tied for the low round of the day with even par 72s.
Christine Wolf led the way for the Lady Mocs with a six-over par 78. The sophomore had seven bogeys against one birdie on her card. Her clutch putting salvaged her round in the gusty conditions.
Wolf finished tied for 40th overall with teammate Emma de Groot. de Groot shot a 79 (+7) for her final round to join Wolf at 231 (+15) for the tourney. Her ball striking carried her through this day as she scored 11 pars with seven bogeys.
Maria Juliana Loza also carded a 79 (+7) to finish tied for 66th at 237. Maju birdied the third hole to offset eight bogeys on the day.
It was a tough round for Maria Salinas and Moa Duf. Salinas came in at 84 with just 29 putts. Duf also had her struggles in shooting 85. Duf finished tied for 47th at 233, while Salinas tied for 62nd at 236.
“They really hung in there today,” smiled Head Coach Colette Murray. “It was not easy by any stretch, but they battled and earned their way to the finals.”
The NCAA Finals will be May 19-22 at the Caves Valley Golf in Owings Mills, Md. Owings Mills is a suburb of Baltimore.
Furman Finishes 14th At NCAA East Regional
Gainesville, Fla. -- Furman (305-290-308=903) concluded its season with a final round 308 to finish in 14th place on Saturday at the NCAA East Regional at the University of Florida’s par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
Senior Blair Lamb (73-70-75=218), playing her final round as a Paladin, carded a five-over 75 to finish with a share of 15th place. Sophomore Stefanie Kenoyer (76-71-75=222) also notched a final round 75 to take a share of 34th place.
After posting the low round among the 21 teams in the second round, Furman shot 28-over on the final day of the 54-hole tournament to fall out of contention for a top eight finish and berth in the NCAA Championship. The University of Denver claimed first place at the East Regional with rounds of 287-296-279 to finish at 22-over par 862. Alabama finished four strokes back in second place while Tennessee was 11 strokes behind in third place. Virginia, Tulane, Duke, North Carolina and Georgia rounded out the top eight teams who earned a spot in the NCAA Championship.
Denver’s Dawn Shockley (73-70-66=209) recorded a four-under par final round to edge UCF’s Stephanie Connelly (73-69-68=210) by one stroke for individual medalist honors.

CofC Women's Golf Finishes 20th at NCAA East Regional
Gainesville, Fla. - Steffi Kirchmayr (Pocking, Germany) fired a 74 in the third round and tied for 61st as the College of Charleston women's golf team finished 20th at the NCAA East Regional held May 7-9 at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. Denver totaled an 862 in 54 holes to take the title, with Alabama following, four strokes behind.
Denver's Dawn Shockley shot a 66 in today's round to finish with a 209 and took home individual medalist honors. UCF's Stephanie Connelly finished second with a 210.
Following Kirchamyr, who finished the tournament with a 228, was Courtney Brink (Ponte Vedra Beach, Calif.) who tied for 76th with a 232. Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) followed with a 233 for a tie at 80th. Fiona Puyo (Pau, France) was 83rd with a 234 and in 96th was Emily Rapp with a 242.
The top eight teams from the 54-hole regional advanced to the NCAA Finals which will be held May 19-22 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Other teams advancing were Tennessee, Virginia, Tulane, Duke, North Carolina and Georgia.
