Appalachian State 4, Presbyterian 3

 

BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women’s tennis team pulled out a win Wednesday afternoon, as the Mountaineers defeated Presbyterian 4-3 at the ASU Tennis Courts. With the win the Black and Gold improve to 8-13 on the season, while Presbyterian drops to 2-14.

ASU began the match on a strong note, as the Apps swept through doubles action winning all three matches.

 

The duo of Olivia Stannard and Gisela Fernandez downed Megan Davis and Abby Diminich 8-3 at the number spot, while Blakeley Bean and Lindsay King sealed the doubles spot for ASU, winning 8-2 at the number two position. Amanda Cash and Laura Janke kept the Mountaineers spotless in doubles play, earning an 8-5 win at the number three position.

 

The Blue Hose would rally a comeback in singles action, as Cash fell to Diminich at the number one spot, losing in two sets to knot the match at one apiece. Heather Prior was also defeated at the five spot, and Bean came up short against Cara Caruso, losing 6-4, 6-4 at the four position to put PC up 3-1.

 

Impressive wins by Caroline Mauch at the number three spot, winning 7-5, 7-5 and King at the two position, put the match score back at three all.

 

Fernandez came up big for Appalachian at the six spot, defeating Virginia Waldron, 6-4, 7-6, including 7-3 in the tiebreaker to lead ASU to the win.

 

The Mountaineers return to action Tuesday April 14, as they take on UNCG at 3 p.m. at the ASU Tennis Courts.

 

 

Charlotte 6, Wofford 1

 

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -  The Wofford women's tennis team ventured out of the Southern Conference for a non conference tilt with the Charlotte 49ers on Wednesday afternoon in which Charlotte took the match by a score of 6-1.  The 49ers took the doubles point and five singles matches en route to the victory.  Wofford now sits at 2-15 overall and 1-8 in the Southern Conference while Charlotte improves to 13-4 overall.

 

The 49ers came out quick and took the doubles point by sweeping all three matches.  Cayley Wetzig and Kristin Demosthenes had a tough loss for the Terriers as they fell to the Charlotte duo of Andrea Rivera and Julia Junker 8-5 on court No. 2.  Sabrina Smyers and Haley Baird were defeated on court No. 1 by Ana Spivakovsky and Yudeshnee while Sonia Anand and Betsy Hauer  were downed by Koren Fleming and Gabi Vergara on court No. 3.

 

Leading 1-0 heading into singles play, Charlotte didn't let up as the Terriers were only able to pick up one singles win.  On court No. 4, Anand matched her score from yesterday as she rolled to another victory this time beating Candace Cunningham  6-4, 6-1.  The remaining five Terriers were defeated in straight sets.

 

Wofford will return to the hard courts on Friday in Johnson City, Tenn. as they take on East Tennessee State at 11:00 a.m.
