Robinson Scores Spot on All-State Team for Second Straight Year
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Adding to her postseason honors, senior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) has been named to the fifth-annual North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State women’s basketball first team for the second year in a row.
Robinson and North Carolina A&T’s Amber Bland were the lone returners from last year?s first team.
The senior joins Katie Hamilton (2005 & 2007) and Tia Washington (2006 & 2007) as the only Wildcats to twice be named to either the first or second teams, while she becomes the first player in program history to garner first-team honors twice.
Earlier, Robinson was named to the All-Southern Conference First Teams for both the media and coaches squads.
Robinson closed out her Wildcat career ranked seventh all-time in scoring with 1,115 points and third in rebounding at 769. She also ranked in the Davidson record books top-15 in field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted, field goal percentage and steals.
The senior?s final year saw her tallying career bests in points (14.7) and rebounds (9.6) per game. Those numbers placed her third and first, respectively, in each category in the SoCon. The senior’s 9.6 rebounding average also ranked in the nation’s top-25. At one time during the season, she had a streak of 17 straight games where she led the team in rebounding.
Coming off a league-best 14 double-doubles as a junior, Robinson equaled that total this year and added one more in the final game of the regular season at Furman to again pace the SoCon. Nine times she led the team in points and rebounds in a game.
Robinson’s senior campaign also saw her set the single-season school record with 288 rebounds, while also etching her name atop the charts in made free throws with 111.
Harouna Mutombo/Brooke Johnson Named NCCSIA All-State Mutombo First Team and Johnson Second Team
CULLOWHEE, N.C. ? Western Carolina women’s basketball player Brooke Johnson and men’s basketball player Harouna Mutombo have been named to the fifth-annual North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State basketball teams. Mutombo was a first team selection while Johnson received a season team nod.
Mutombo, a redshirt-freshman guard from Pickering, Ontario, averaged 14.4 points per game on his way to earning first-team all-state accolades. Named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year by both the league’s coaches and media association, Mutombo was the SoCon’s leading rookie scorer.
Mutombo garnered Southern Conference All-Freshman team and Coaches All-SoCon first team honors while also picking up a second team All-SoCon nod from the media. For the season, Mutombo posted 24 double-digit scoring performances including six with 20 or more points and ranked ninth overall in the conference in scoring and was third in steals. Mutombo earned SoCon Player of the Week honor once this season and was named to the all-tournament team at the Great Alaska Shootout.
Johnson, a senior center from Seymour, Tenn., was voted the Southern Conference Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after averaging 18.3 points and nine rebounds in three games. She broke the school record for block, ending her career with 130. Johnson also led the team averaging 10.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.
Johnson had 16 double digit scoring performances, posted a career-high 26 points against Davidson on December 14 and had five double-doubles. She was a candidate for the prestigious Lowe’s Senior Class Award, making her one of the top 30 seniors in the nation. She was also a 2009 ESPN The Magazine District 3 First Team Academic All-District, a finalist for the V Foundation Comeback Award and an All-Southern Conference selection.
