SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Western Carolina track and field athlete Matt Evans has been named Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from April 1-7, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Evans, who boasts a 3.743 GPA in physical education, claimed a pair of first-place finishes and qualified for the NCAA Regionals in both at the Mountains vs. Beach meet hosted by the Catamounts this past weekend. The junior won the high jump with a leap of 2.10 meters and the javelin with a throw of 61.60 meters.
Also nominated for this week’s award were Furman women’s tennis player Laura Gioia, Chattanooga men’s golfer Derek Rende, Georgia Southern baseball player Ty Wright, Davidson baseball player Matt Webb, Samford track athlete Hillary Neal, Elon women’s tennis player Andrea March, UNC Greensboro softball player Lyndsay Mouse and Appalachian State men’s tennis player Bobby Lake.
