Mills Wins Individual Title; Phoenix Places Second
MORGANTON, N.C. ? The Elon Phoenix women’s golf team rallied from 12 strokes down, but finished second with a final score of 612, one stroke behind Augusta State (611), at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. Elon's Danielle Mills claimed medalist honors after carding a three-over par 147 (73-74) over the two rounds, finishing one stroke ahead of Julia Stalboro of Augusta State.
Led by Mills, all five Phoenix team members finished in the top-16 of the field. Tara McFadden ended fifth after shooting a 152 (78-74) despite the wintery conditions on Tuesday.
Frederique Bruell and Virginia Mayer each carded a 158 over their 36 holes to sit in an 12th-place tie. Kelsey Johnson completed Elon’s card with a 159 (82-77) to take 16th place.
Playing as an individual, Elon's Lindsey Thomka shot a 171 (83-88) to tie for 39th.
Trailing Augusta State and Elon in the 10-team field were co-hosts Western Carolina (625) and Appalachian State (643) along with Samford (644), Charleston Southern (647), Gardner-Webb (652), High Point (670), Western Kentucky (675) and The Citadel (716).
The Phoenix returns to action in two weeks at the Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship which will be held at the Moss Creek Resort in Hilton Head, S.C. from April 18-21.
Augusta State Edges Elon to Win 2009 Mimosa Hills Women's Intercollegiate; Western Carolina Finished Third
Morganton, N.C. - Amidst wintry conditions including sporadic snow showers and a steady wind, Augusta State edged hard-charging Elon by one stroke, 611-to-612, to win the 2009 Mimosa Hills Women's Intercollegiate team championship. Danielle Mills of Elon took home individual medalist honors, nipping first-round leader Julia Stalbro from Augusta State by a stroke at the par 72, 5,869-yard Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
The Jaguars held a 12-stroke advantage over the Phoenix entering Tuesday's final round after shooting a nine-over 297 on Monday. However, Elon, aided by a pair of two-over 74s from Mills and Tara McFadden, trimmed 11 strokes off Augusta State's lead with a 303 over the final 18.
McFadden finished fifth overall at 152, just behind Tamara Luccioli (152) of Augusta State and Katelyn Stanier (151) from Samford.
Led by junior Desiree Karlsson's seventh-place finish, Western Carolina (625) finished third overall in the event it co-hosted with Southern Conference rival, Appalachian State. The Mountaineers finished fourth at 643, with a fourth SoCon-foe, Samford (644), rounding out the top five schools.
Karlsson trimmed two strokes off her opening round 78 to shoot 76 for a two-day total of 154 to post the top-10 finish, her team-leading fifth this season.
Sophomore Josefine Sundh, who led the Catamounts through the first round, struggled with the conditions on Tuesday to shoot 84, slipping from third into a two-way tie for 10th with freshman teammate Blaire Minter at 157. Minter, who was in a seven-way tie for 18th after an opening-round 81, shaved five strokes off her second round score to shoot 76. The duo each posed their third top 10 finishes of the season, with Minter adding a pair of individual championships in her rookie campaign.
Rounding out Western's finishers were freshmen Rachel Nelson and Ashley Shinn, each shooting two-day totals of 161 to finish in a three-way tie for 19th.
Western Carolina returns to action in two weeks at the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship which will be held at the Moss Creek Resort in Hilton Head, S.C. The Catamounts won the Lowcountry Intercollegiate it co-hosted with Wofford at the same venue back in early March.
The SoCon Championship is scheduled for April 18-21 with the 54-hole event spread over three days plus a practice round.
Women's Golf Finishes Fourth at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. - Brooke DeHart shot a 77-79=156 to lead Appalachian State University women's golf to a fourth place finish at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate.
DeHart finished in a tie for eighth to lead ASU. Kerri Dice shot an 79-81=160 to finnish tied for 17th.
Jordan Kreuter finished 26th 76-89=165 while Mary Kate Bowman finished tied for 27th with a 85-81=166. Emily McGonagle rounded out the field for the Mountaineers' with a 170.
Augusta State won the team tournament with a 611, just edging out Elon who finished with a 612. Elon's Danielle Mills was the individual winner with a three-over par 147.
Paladins Finish 10th At Sun Trust Lady Gator Invitational
Gainesville, Fla. -- Brie Heinzler and Stefanie Kenoyer each posted an eight-over 78 on Tuesday to help Furman (307-316-319=942) to a 10th place finish at the Sun Trust Lady Gator Invitational at the par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida.
Kenoyer (76-76-78=230), a sophomore from Lighthouse Point, Fla., earned a share of 13th place in the 16-team, 84-golfer field while Heinzler (81-80-78=239) finished in a tie for 46th with teammate Blair Lamb (78-79-82=239). Sophomore Jackie Hilea finished with a share of 36th at 26-over 236.
Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst (70-75-77=222) claimed individual medalist honors shooting seven-over par on Tuesday to edge Washington’s Molly Aronsson and Georgia State’s Charlotte Lorentzen by two strokes. Auburn defeated Duke in a one hole playoff for the team title. Georgia State finished one stroke behind the Tigers and Blue Devils in third place.
Furman will take part in the 2009 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship April 19-21, at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

The Citadel Golf Concludes Regular Season with 10th Place Finish at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate

The Citadel Golf wrapped-up the regular season in 10th place with a 716 (+140) at the Mimosa Hills Women’s Intercollegiate at the par 72, 5,869-yard Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club course on Tuesday in Morganton, N.C. Nationally ranked Augusta State edged Elon by one stroke, 611 to 612, to claim the team championship.
Freshman Bree Baumgartner improved 11 strokes in the second round firing an 81 to finish the tournament as the top Bulldog golfer with a 173 (+29) to tie for 42nd place overall. Freshman Alanna-Jean Keith also improved in the second round with an 85 for a two-day total of 176 (+32), tying for 49th place with teammate sophomore Christine Clark, who was leading the Bulldogs after round one. Seniors Brittany Nagel and Kasey Owens rounded out the scoring for The Citadel with a 191 (+47) and 206 (+62), respectively.
Elon’s Danielle Mills took home the individual title after nipping first-round leader Julia Stalbro of August State by one stroke with a two-day total of 147 (+3). Third place also went to Augusta State as Tamara Luccioli totaled 150 (+6) in the two-round event. Samford’s Katelyn Stanier and Elon’s Tara McFadden rounded out the top five with a 151 (+7) and 152 (+8), respectively.
