Davidson 7, Appalachian State 0

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. -­ The Davidson women?s tennis team returned to the win column when they earned a clean sweep in all six singles matches to go along with another three in doubles play as the Wildcats earned a 7-0 win over visiting Appalachian State on Tuesday afternoon during Southern Conference play.

 

Davidson halted a two-match losing streak to run its overall mark to an even 10-10 and 5-3 in SoCon matches. The win was the Wildcats? fourth shutout victory of the season. ASU fell to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in league play.

 

The match started out with Davidson taking all three doubles positions by the scores of 8-6, 8-5, and 8-4. Leading the way was the duo of Ali Gores and Molly McDevitt, who registered their sixth win at No. 3 together and remained perfect at 5-0 in SoCon action.

 

Romina Clemente, a doubles specialist for the Cats, earned her fifth doubles win as she teamed up with Alison Rauh at No. 2 for an 8-5 win over Lindsay King and Blakeley Bean.

 

From there, senior Michele Fanney and junior Virginia Berry, who earned the third doubles win at No. 1, paced the Wildcats? to straight set wins at all six singles positions for the 7-0 win.

 

Fanney rattled off a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Amanda Cash at No. 1, while Berry rolled to her seventh straight singles win, giving up just one game to Caroline Mauch in a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2. Berry also remained perfect in league matches at 8-0 to go along with a 15-5 overall mark.

 

Also making it a perfect afternoon was Gores, a 7-6, 6-3 winner over Bean at No. 4 and McDevitt, who scored a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5.  Rauh joined the other four OCats for a perfect day as well, giving up just one game in a straight set win over King.

 

Closing out the match with her ninth win of the season was Samantha Galainena as she picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Olivia Stannard. The sophomore also ran her conference singles record to 5-2, second-best on the team.

 

 

Elon 6, Wofford 1

 

ELON, N.C. ? The Elon women's tennis squad defeated Wofford 6-1 in Southern Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.  Elon moves to 10-10 overall and 4-4 in SoCon play while Wofford falls to 2-14 and 1-8 in the league.

Elon took the doubles point after Anna Milian and Paige Kensrue defeated Haley Baird and Sabrina Smyers 8-5 while Hayley Wahl and Daleen Kloppers downed Sonia Anand and Betsy Hauer 9-7.  Wofford's Cayley Wetzig and Kristin Demosthenes earned an 8-0 over Elisa Simonetti and Lauren Sessoms.  

In singles action, Milian defeated Wetzig 6-3, 6-2 at the number one spot while Kensrue downed Baird 7-5, 6-4 at number two.  In number three singles, Simonetti earned a 6-0, 6-4 win over Smyers.  Anand earned Wofford's only singles win with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Whitney Butcher at the number four spot.  Sessoms defeated Hauer 6-0, 6-2 at number five while Laura Graybill downed Demosthenes 7-5, 6-4.  


UNC Greensboro 4, East Carolina 3

 

GREENVILLE, N.C. ? Alejandra Guerra, Lucy Dougherty and Arielle VonStrolley picked up straight-set singles victories as UNC Greensboro edged East Carolina, 4-3, in non-conference women’s tennis action Tuesday afternoon.

 

The match was tightly contested, although all of the matches were easily decided. The teams split the three singles matches after UNCG won two of three doubles matches to jump out to a 1-0 lead early on. Guerra topped Jessica Cook, 6-0 and 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while Arielle VonStrolley topped Natalie Collins, 6-2 and 6-4, at No. 3 singles.

 

Freshman Lucy Dougherty won for the 13th time in 14 matches when she shutout Rocio Cabanillas, 6-0 and 6-0. The Melbourne, Australia native is now 18-8 on the season.
