BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men’s tennis came up just short Tuesday afternoon, as the Mountaineers dropped a tough decision to No. 66 Elon, falling 5-2 at the Yonahlossee Raquet Club. With the loss, the Black and Gold drop to 11-9 and 3-5 in league action, while the Phoenix improves to 16-5 overall and a stout 7-1 in the SoCon.

ASU posted a strong effort in doubles action, but was unable to come up with the point, notching just one win.

At the number three spot, the duo of Britton Webb and Philip Kloc got out to an early three set lead, but could not stave off a rally by Cody Stauffer MacDowell and Alberto Rojas, falling 8-3.

Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs were impressive at the number two doubles position, routing their opponents 8-2 to knot the doubles play at one all.

Bobby Lake and Lee Floyd put up a strong fight, but No. 32 Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec came up victorious, winning 8-5 to give Elon the early 1-0 advantage.

In singles action, Constance was defeated at the number two spot by Oscar Podlewski, dropping in two sets, 7-6, 6-3.

At the number one spot, No. 125 Bobby Lake, grabbed ASU’s most impressive win of the day, as he downed No. 69 Damon Gooch in two sets, picking up a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Despite solid efforts, Jacobs could not come away with a win against Nemec at the three spot after pushing the match into three sets and Floyd and Kloc were also unsuccessful at the number four and five positions as each lost to their opponents in two sets.

Freshman Alain Humblet capped off the match on a high note for the Apps, as he earned a win over Cariln Murry, winning 6-4, 6-4.
