SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Citadel junior first baseman Chris McGuiness has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Elon sophomore lefthander Jimmy Reyes has been chosen as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from March 30 ? April 5.

 

McGuiness batted .467 last week in a 7-for-15 performance while being walked six times and getting hit by a pitch once. Four of his seven hits were home runs, including two in Friday’s 13-3 win over Wofford. McGuiness hit a home run in three consecutive games last week and notched 11 RBIs while scoring seven runs. Five of his seven hits were extra-base hits as he added a double to his credit and had a slugging percentage of 1.333. The junior was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the Bulldogs’ 12-5 win over No. 28 South Carolina last Tuesday night.

 

Reyes struck out a career-best 11 hitters in a career-long outing of 8.0 innings to help lead Elon to a 2-1 victory over UNC Greensboro on Friday night.  The win improved Reyes to 4-0 on the year.  He has walked only seven hitters while striking out 37 in 35.1 innings on the year.

 

The SoCon’s weekly awards are voted on by the league’s baseball sports information directors.

 

Other hitters earning consideration for the award were Georgia Southern’s Roman Grimaldi, Elon’s Neal Pritchard, Wofford’s Kyle Behrendt, UNC Greensboro’s Ed Jayjack, Appalachian State’s Rand Smith, Davidson’s Zach Kayne, College of Charleston’s Clay McCord, Samford’s Mason Meredeth and Western Carolina’s J.C. Lyons.

 

Other pitchers nominated were The Citadel’s Drew Mahaffey, Appalachian State’s Aubrey Edens, Western Carolina’s Kyle Stewart, Georgia Southern’s Kyle Kamppi, Davidson’s Matt Webb, UNC Greensboro’s Warren Slack, Samford’s Michael Jarry and Wofford’s Bobby DeLuria.
