Appalachian State ? Men
CULLOWHEE, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's track and field continued with its dominating performances Saturday afternoon, as the Apps were impressive at the first annual Beach vs. Mountains meet hosted by Western Carolina.
In the 100-meter dash, freshman DeSean Pearce placed sixth with a time of 10.87, while Jake Goodchild and Mike Pope came in ninth and tenth.
Phillip Bush paced ASU in the 200-meter dash, finishing seventh with a time of 22.05, while Pearce notched the ninth-place spot.
John Svoboda earned the runner-up spot in the 400-meter run with a time of 48.28, while Nick O'Keefe and Chris Moen grabbed the ninth and tenth-place spots in the 800-meter run.
In the 1500-meter run, Bud Galloway posted a solid showing, taking home third with a time of 3:58.02, while O'Keefe and Moen placed fourth and seventh in the event.
Freshman Sean Soderman captured first in the 3000-steeplechase with teammate Alec Meyer right on his heels earning the runner-up spot.
Ryan Harris came in second in the 3000-meter run.
Daniel Neal was strong in the hurdles, placing first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.41, and Bush and Matt Boruff finishing seventh and eighth in the event. Boruff also took home seventh in the 400 hurdles.
Freshman Darius Purcell continued his impressive outings in the high jump, notching the runner-up spot with a leap of 6-8.75. Boruff and Matt Pfingst came in sixth and seventh in the event.
One of the most impressive performances of the afternoon came in the pole vault, as Matt Boruff set a new personal best vault of 15-7, good enough to put him at tied for seventh on ASU's all-time list in the event. Ryan Twiford grabbed the second-place spot, while Mike Wilson came in fourth.
Rounding out Saturday's meet, in the shot put Malcom Styers finished first with a throw of 52-8, moving him into sixth on ASU's all-time list in the event, with Jerod Gardner and Jared Stalling earning the second and fourth-place finishes.
Gardner was also solid in the discus, placing second with a throw of 144-3 and Caleb Poplin and Styers were right behind Gardner at the third and fourth-place spots.
Tim Daly led the Black and Gold in the hammer, with a new personal best throw of 191-2, putting him at fourth on ASU's all-time list in the event.
ASU returns to action Friday April 10, as they head to Knoxville, Tenn. to compete at the Sea Ray Relays.
Appalachian State ? Women
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's track and field posted six first-place finishes to go along with numerous other strong performances Saturday afternoon at the first annual Beach vs. Mountains meet held at Western Carolina.
In the 100-meter dash, Crystal Dukes and Monica Johnson paced the Apps earning sixth and seventh-place finishes, respectively, while Christina Parker ran a solid 24.83 in the 200-meter dash to notch a fourth-place finish. Johnson, Nadia Liriano and Danielle Thorpe finished sixth, ninth and 11th in the event.
Freshman Asia Dunlap posted a personal best performance in the 400-meter dash, finishing fourth on the afternoon with a time of 56.48, good enough to move her into seventh on ASU's all-time list in the event. Teammates Lynda Hiller and Liriano placed seventh and tenth in the event.
Senior Jen Povick was impressive in the 800-meter run, capturing first, and running the race in 2:11.90, a new personal best and the time puts her at fourth on Appalachian's all-time list in the event.
In the 1500-meter run, Kala Robertson and Dani Reese notched fifth and seventh place finishes, while Stephanie Chapman led ASU in the 3000-steeplechase finishing first with a time of 11:48.54. The performance moves her into seventh on ASU's all-time list.
Ashley Norris came in sixth in the 3000-meter run.
Michelle Brutus had two solid performances in the 100 and 400 hurdles, grabbing second and first-place finishes, respectively, while Naadia Crutchfield and Meg Irwin placed fifth and eighth in the 400 hurdles.
Bridgette Hills placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5-5, while Rebecca Hazeltine finished tied for third and Julie Ward came in tied for sixth.
In the pole vault, Shea Snow tied a personal best, vaulting 12-1.5 and earning a first-place finish, while Ward took home fourth place, vaulting a new pr of 11-7.75.
Danielle Thorpe continued with her dominance in the long and triple jump, as the junior finished first in both. Bianca Harvey placed third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump.
Appalachian’s strong showing capped off with the throwing events, as Lily Tallent came in third in the discus throw, with a throw of 132-6 and finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 125-4. Teammates Michaela McGriff and Carla Durham finished sixth and eighth in the discus.
In the hammer throw, junior Whitney Smyre finished third with a throw of 158-10. The throw helped Smyre to crack into the top-ten list, putting her at sixth all-time.
The Moutaineers return to action April 10, as they head to Knoxville, Tenn. to compete at the Sea Ray Relays.
College of Charleston
DURHAM, N.C. -- The College of Charleston women’s track and field team took part in Asics Duke Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Top finishers on the day Saturday included Alyssa D'Orazio, who placed fifth in the 800-meters with a time of 2:19.65 and Kristen Wolfe, finished fourth in 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:02.00. Wolfe’s mark also broke a school-record in the event.
Mary Zolga also set a school record in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 57.55 to place eighth, while Isabel Boersma became the fourth competitor to break a school record on the day when she ran the 100-meter hurdles in 15.59. Also, the 4x400-meter relay team of D’Orazio, Zolga, Laura Call and Hilary Vigh placed sixth with a time of 3:57.03.
Emily Smith placed eighth in the high jump with a 1.60 meter effort and Brynne Johnson placed ninth in the long jump with a 5.11 meter performance.
On Friday, Wolfe set a school record in the 1500-meters with a time of 4:45.38 and Erin Stoddard had a seventh-place finish in the 5000-meters with a personal best time of 17:58.81. Johnson placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a 27.49 mark and Jessica Cumbee had a 14th-place finish in the pole vault with a 3.15-meter effort.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, April 11th when they take part in the Furman Invitational.
The Citadel
Durham, N.C. ? Jamel Brown placed second overall in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.82 as The Citadel represented well at the Duke Invitational at the Wallace Wade Stadium at Duke University in Durham, N.C. on April 3-4.
Marqueth Tard came in first overall as an unattached runner leading Brown to become the first collegiate runner to cross the finish line in the 400 hurdles. Brown also made it to the 110-meter high hurdles finals with a time of 15.13 in the preliminaries. He improved his prelim time to 15.07 to take sixth place. Brown ran the 200-meter with a time of 23.03 for 19th place.
Brillyance Gilchrist-Poteat had another successful weekend as she broke her freshman record for the second time this season in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.24, finishing 10th overall.
This time improves her second all-time record in The Citadel’s top 10 all-time lists. Gilchrist-Poteat also ran the 200 for 23rd place with a time of 26.32 to earn the ninth all-time spot.
Quintin Turner threw a personal-best in the discus with a mark of 158-3 to finish fourth and moves up to the third spot all-time. He also threw the hammer for a mark of 137-9 for 13th place. Jodi Whittle took sixth in the 400 dash with a personal-best time of 57.47, improving her second all-time record. Whittle also ran the 400 hurdles placing 11th with a time of 65.49.
James Harris placed seventh in the high jump with a jump of 6-2.75 and Christian Graham ran the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.18 for eighth place. Graham ran the 200 recording 22.62 for a 10th-place finish.
Christopher Castagno threw a personal-best in the hammer with a throw of 154-0 to take 10th and moved to the fifth all-time spot in The Citadel’s record books. Brian Baize took 10th jumping for a personal-best of 14’ 7.25” in the pole vault and clinched the third all-time record.
Frank Dioguardi ran a season-best in the developmental 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.10 for a 12th-place finish.
Zach Johnson also ran a season-best for a time of 1:54.23 in the 800 to take 14th place and Emily Green earned a personal-best in the hammer throwing 135-8 for a 15th-place finish, improving her third all-time record. Sarah Creel ran the 100 dash for a time of 12.90 to finish 15th and then she ran the 200 for 17th place with a time of 26.00.
Coming up next, the Bulldogs will split the team as some will participate in the prestigious Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., on Friday, April 10 to Saturday, April 11, while others will attend the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C., on Saturday, April 11.
Davidson - Men
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Davidson men’s track & field team brought home eight top-ten finishes, including three from senior Will Funderburg, to turn in their best performance of the outdoor season at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational over the weekend.
Funderburg led the Wildcats with a trio of top-tens, topped by a third-place finish in the shot put following a throw of 14.46 meters. The Buford, Ga. native also took seventh in the javelin with a throw of 43.13 meters, and had a 38.46 meter toss in the discuss, good for 10th place.
Sophomore Jake Leonard turned in a pair of strong finishes in the field, coming in ninth in discuss with a distance of 38.81 meters, and taking home 10th in the javelin, recording a mark of 39.07 meters.
The top finisher in the meet for the ?Cats was Ian Tupper, who recorded a runner-up performance in the steeplechase, traversing the 3,000-meter course in 9:49.73 for the first podium finish of his career. Junior Blake Evitt came in right behind Tupper, recording a fourth-place finish with a time of 9:54.47.
Fellow freshman Taylor Martin notched the best finish of his young career with an eighth-place mark in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.39.
Davidson will continue its competition this weekend with some of the team heading to Durham, N.C. to take part in the Duke Invitational. Then on April 11, the Wildcats will compete in the Joe Hilton UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Davidson ? Women
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Seniors Kim Colley and Kennesia Martin shattered their own school records as the Wildcat women's track and field team competed at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational over the weekend.
Colley finished tied for fifth in the 100-meter run with a time of 12.57, besting her own school-best time of 12.63 from the 2007 season. She also finished ninth in the 200-meter run with a time of 25.17.
Martin finished second in the triple jump with a Davidson-best mark of 11.78 meters (38-07.75). She previously set the record with a jump of 11.70 meters last weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic.
Danielle Wright, school-record holder in the indoor 400-meter run, placed seventh in the 400 with a time of 1:00.74.
Davidson's distance runners also competed at the meet.
Emily King finished 25th (18:39.57) in the "B" flight of the 5000-meter run to highlight competition for the Wildcats.
Davidson returns to action at the Joe Hilton UNC Invitational Sat., April 11 in the final tune-up of the season before the 2009 SoCon Outdoor Championships.
Elon
ELON, N.C. ? First the first time this season, the weather cooperated as the track team split to compete at both the Liberty Invite and the Duke Invitational. The good weather proved to help the team continue its success as five school records were broken. Three of the records were set at Liberty with two more falling at Duke.
The most fascinating record came in the women's 200-meter dash. Freshman Amy Salek broke the previous school record set by Dominique Price at the Duke Invite early Saturday morning with a time of 25.71. Her record didn't last long as Freshman Dana Cataldo put forth a time of 25.36 at Liberty less than three hours later. Amy also went on to finish third overall in the 400-meter dash at the Duke Invite on Saturday crossing the finish line in 56.06.
Sophomore multi-eventer Jacqueline Beliveau put in a two-day heptathlon score of 4,271 points earning her a second-place overall finish and shattering the previous school record. Her combined score currently ranks her as the top-competitor in the SoCon so far this year.
The 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Melissa Turowski, Andrea March, Jennine Strange and Salek broke yet another school record. Their time of 3:53.72 at the Duke invite was good enough for fourth-place overall.
Sophomore distance specialist Emily Fournier ran a new school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Duke on Saturday. Her time of 11:04.42 was also good enough to rank her on top of the SoCon leader boards.
Rounding out the record books was sophomore high jumper Courtney Weathers who tied a school record with a best jump of 5-1.75 at Liberty.
The discus duo of Justine Robertson and Alyssa Girvin put in another great performance on the day. The duo was already ranked first and second in the SoCon coming into the competition and they made sure that it stayed that way. Alyssa came out on top with a best throw of 139-06 winning the competition at Liberty while Justine wasn't far behind with a new personal best throw of 137-09, good enough for second place. Alyssa's throw was only 2 centimeters off the current school record set by Angela Carlberg in 2005. The pair remains atop of the conference, though they traded places as Girvin now owns the top stop and Robertson holding second place.
Robertson also went on to finish third in the javelin throw with a best toss of 116-04 at Liberty.
Other notable performances came from March as she put forth another SoCon leading performance in the women's 400-meter hurdles. No stranger to the Duke track, the former Blue Devil and now Elon Phoenix ran a time of 1:03.92, earning fifth place out of 34 competitors.
Mid-distance runner Strange moved up to second in the conference rankings after running a 2:14.10 in the women's 800-meter run.
Elon will next travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete in the UNC Invitational on Saturday, April 11.
Georgia Southern
Day 1
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Georgia Southern track & field team broke school records in the 1500-meter run and the high jump.
Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) broke the school record in the 1500 with a time of 4:45.55. Fuller narrowly passed the previous mark held by Brittney Jett with a time of 4:45.56.
Melanie Trumbo (Lilburn, Ga.) surpassed Kellie Mitchell's school high jump record of 5-7 with a 5-8.75 mark and finished third in the event at the relays. The Lilburn native also qualified for the NCAA Regionals with her jump.
The Eagles' 4x200-meter relay team finished 20th in the event with a time of 1:40.39.
Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) set a new season high with a 12:33.02 time in the steeplechase and finished 20th in the event.
Lynndsey Hyter (Dallas, Texas) placed seventh in the long jump with a mark of 5.77 meters.
Track & field will continue the Florida Relays tomorrow in Gainesville, Fla.
Day 2
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Georgia Southern track & field team completed the Florida Relays in fine fashion by breaking school records and season highs. The Eagles set a new school record in the 1600-meter sprint medley.
Georgia Southern set a new school record with a 13th-place finish in the 1600 sprint medley with a time of 4:02.47.
"I was really proud of our team," said head coach Natalie Smith. "We had a great showing breaking multiple school records."
The Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team bettered their season high with a time of 47.44.
Georgia Southern continued their relay success in the 4x400-meter relay, bettering their season best time. The relay team finished 19th in the Florida Relays with a time of 3:45.80.
The Eagles had their best relay with a seventh-place finish in the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:08.54.
Melanie Trumbo (Lilburn, Ga.) surpassed her season-high javelin mark by four meters. The Southern Conference Field Athlete of the Week finished 12th with a mark of 36.91 meters.
Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) finished 25th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 19:43.09.
Track & field returns to action April 18th at the Auburn Invitational.
UNC Greensboro
DURHAM, NC ? AJ Savoia nearly broke the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to help lead UNC Greensboro at the Duke Invitational on Saturday.
Savoia’s time of 9:25.52 was good enough for the second-best time in school history and fewer than two seconds from breaking the school record.
Freshman Joey Thompson was also a bright spot for the Spartans as his time of 15:03.65 in the 5,000-meters was also the second-best time in school history.
TJ Wyatt also was a top performer as he recorded the fourth-best time in school history in the 800-meters with a time of 1:54.72.
On the women’s side, Danielle Merriman and Michelle Chewens were the top performers. Merriman ran the 400-meters in just 1:07.25, which was good enough for the fourth-best time in school history.
Chewens’ time of 2:21.63 in the 800 was also the fourth-best time in school history.
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday at the Carolina Fast Times in Chapel Hill, NC on April 11.
Samford
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ---- The Samford University track and field team had one of its best showings of the outdoor season Saturday at the Austin Peay Governors' Invitational. The Bulldogs won 11 events and set 17 personal records while breaking one school record and grabbing a regional qualifying mark.
"What a day," Samford head coach Rod Tiffin said. "We had 11 victories and 17 personal bests, plus one school record and a regional qualifying mark. The focus of this meet was for us to get back together as a team. I know that happened today. I'm proud and excited about how we competed. I really felt that we were a team today and got things accomplished.
Hillary Neal won the 800-meter run with a regional qualifying time of 2:09.68. Cori Christensen placed second in the same event with a personal best of 2:14.50.
Jessica Van Ausdall took third in the 1500-meters with a personal best of 4:42.51 while Brittney Harrison (5:12.20) and Alli Keithan (5:21.32) placed 11th and 17th, respectively, in the same event. Deanna Zidar won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:25.98.
Andrea Seccafien won the women's two-mile run with a personal best of 11:01. 26 while Katie Almand placed ninth with a personal best of 12:15.23.
Ashley Dance (57.18) and Ashley Flowers (59.77) took second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Elyse Rippe placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.94.
Donald Cooper took fifth with a personal best of 11.18 in the 100 dash while grabbing fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.26. Blaise Carie placed second in the two-mile run with a personal best of 9:34.10 and Joel Rogers placed 23rd with a personal best of 10:25.94.
Scott Cope won the 800-meter run with a personal best of 1:56.13 followed closely by Carie in fifth with a time of 1:56.95. Will Denton placed 10th in the same event with a time of 2:00.89 and Chas Keithan placed 12th with a time of 2:01.99 while Matt Bryson ran a personal best of 2:02.63 to place 15th. Cope also won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:46.77.
Carie won the 1500-meter run with a personal best of 4:01.01 followed by Patrick Ollinger (4:07.66) in fourth, Justin Rogers (4:19.12) in 16th and Dan Hall in 21st place with a personal best of 4:30.55.
Cavan Corcoran won the 110-meter hurdles (15.38) followed by Cooper in second with a personal best of 16.23 and Keithan in fourth with a personal best of 17.90. Corcoran won the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best of 57.04 and Jordan Cole took third with a time of 1:00.82.
In the field events, Christy Myers took seventh in the high jump with a height of 5-00.25 while Barron took third in the pole vault with a height of 10-08. Rippe took seventh in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 15-06.25 and threw a personal best of 26-9.75 in the shot put.
Patrick Wells won his sixth pole vault event with a height of 15-9 followed by Zac Epperson (14-03.25) in second and Keithan (12-11.35) in third. Asa Ackerson placed sixth in the long jump (20-4.25) and Chris Davis took second in the shot put with a personal best of 44-11.75 while Cooper took 12th with a personal best of 32-7.
Kyle Brown placed third in the discus with a personal best of 143-4 followed by Ryan Fee (130-1) in third, Kyle Kirby (127-7) in fourth and Cooper in ninth with a personal best of 103-6. Kirby also placed third in the hammer throw with a school record of 146-7, Brown took fourth with a personal best of 144-3 and Fee placed sixth with a toss of 123-7.
Thomas Oliver won the javelin throw with a toss 181-84 while Keithan took third with a throw of 155-4.
The women's 4x400-meter relay "A" team (Christensen, Dance, Flowers, Neal) won the relay with a time of 3:50.40 while the "B" team (Mary Barron, Elyse Rippe, Jessica Van Ausdall, Sarah McGough) took sixth with a time of 4:17.77.
"The highlight of the meet may have been our men's throwers running the 4x100," Tiffin said. "We told them they set a Samford record for the 900-pound and above weight limit class. We had a great meet and a great time doing it."
Samford's "A" 4x100 meter relay team (Brown, Davis, Kirby, Fee) took fifth with a time of 49.40.
The Bulldog track and field team will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Oxford, Miss., to participate in the Ole Miss Invitational.
Chattanooga
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. --- Anneli Uys and Sabrina Lefort each claimed a win Saturday afternoon at the Gem of the Hills Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State as the Mocs collected 15 top 10 finishes.
The Lady Mocs, led by Lefort, swept the 3000-meter steeplechase. The Timmins, Ontario senior finished the even in a time of 11:47.58 followed by junior Shelley Taylor at 11:52.02 and Jordyn Radke in third in a time of 12:04.17.
In the 1500-meter run, Uys, the Somerville, Australia junior ran the event in a time of 4:30.19 setting a track and Invitational record. Senior Emily Wood was second in the event in a time of 4:35.16 with sophomore Tara Gietema grabbing a fifth-place finish in the 1500 at 4:49.09 Taylor ran the 800-meter run in a time of 2:20.86 followed by Monika Groppe in eighth at 2:24.76.
In the men’s races, sophomore Chris Berry snagged a second-place finish in the 1500 in a time of 3:47.47. Blake Ketron finished fourth in the event, scoring for the Mocs, with a time of 4:00.24 followed by Joshue Vasquez in fifth in a time of 4:00.68.
In the 3000 steeplechase, freshman Allen Thurman placed second in a time of 9:57.14 followed by Andy Highlander in third.
The Mocs added the Gem of the Hills Invitational to the schedule after last weekend’s Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech was cancelled due to storms in the Atlanta area. The track teams will head to Knoxville April 10th for the UTK Sea Ray Relays.
Western Carolina
Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina's track & field teams brought home 11 victories and 17 podium finishes to help bring home the victory for the Mountains squad on Saturday afternoon in Cullowhee. Western Carolina also had four qualifiers for the NCAA regional in the event.
In the first annual Mountains vs. Beaches event the Mountains team won overall in the men's and women's divisions, respectively. The Mountains consisted of Western Carolina & Appalachian State versus the Beaches team of East Carolina & UNC Wilmington.
The Catamount got started early in the men's hammer throw event with Cale McDaniel taking home a second-place finish with a 50.79 meter throw.
In the men's shot put event Ryan Pless finished in third place throwing 15.04 meters. Pless finished with a 49-4.25-foot throw on his best throw.
Freshman Jamie Van Pelt won his second first-place finish in the discus throw for the season with a 45.05-meter throw.
Also on the men's squad Thomas Funderburk placed third in the long jump event jumping 22-7.75 feet placing just ahead of teammate junior Alex Dollard. Dollard finished in fourth place jumping 22-7.25 feet.
Daniel Joseph took home first-place honors in the men's triple jump event with his best jump at 14.39 meters. Dollard finished in second place in the event for the Catamounts.
Sophomore standout Matt Evans had another terrific performance in the men's high jump event taking home first-place honors. Evans jumped 2.10 meters, which qualifies him for the NCAA regional. Evans attempted the Western Carolina complex record at 2.15 meters but fell just short of the mark.
Junior Dominique Young finished in third place in the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 10.55 seconds. With that time Young qualified himself for the NCAA regional.
Senior Manteo Mitchell continues his terrific performance in the 200-meter dash event placing first with a time of 20.73 seconds. Mitchell is now the new record holder for the 200 dash breaking Catamount Zeb Johnson's record from last year at 20.78 seconds. Teammate Kevin Johnson also qualified for the NCAA regional with a time of 21.26 seconds.
In the men's 400-meter dash freshman Benny Davis took home a first-place finish with a time of 47.61 seconds. Davis has now won the 400 in his last two meets after winning last week's 400 at Winthrop.
In the men's 800-meter run Drew Tucker took home a third-place finish with a time of 1:55.64.
In the men's 3000-meter run Stephen Hammond placed in third place with a time of 9:08.84.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles Jestin Jennings finished in third place with a time of 54.54 falling just short of the first-place time of 53.07.
On the women's side Megan Isaacs started things off with a second-place finish in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:41.93. Jordan Gaddy also placed third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:48.75.
In the women's high jump event the Catamounts placed third thanks to Janet Carothers jumping 5-03.00 feet. Carothers tied for third with Appalachian State's Rebecca Hazeltine.
In the women's triple jump event Jettana Thomas placed third with a 11.06 meters on her best jump.
In the women's 100 Felicia Paulding took first place with a time of 11.85 seconds. Teammate Emma Bowers placed second with a time of 12.14 seconds.
Janet Carothers takes home a first-place finish in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.29 seconds. Teammate Emma Bowers finished in second place with a time of 24.69 seconds earning her second podium finish of the day.
In the 400-meter hurdles event Morgan Joseph placed third for the Catamounts with a time of 1:05.47.
In the women's 400-meter dash Shalyn McMichael finished in first place with a time of 55.50 seconds. Teammate Felisha Garren finished in third with a time of 56.36 seconds.
In the 4x100-meter relays, Western Carolina swept the competition winning both on the men's and women's teams. The men's team of Manteo Mitchell, Kevin Johnson, Dominique Young and Benny Davis finished with a time of 40.24 seconds qualifying them for the NCAA regional.
Western Carolina women's 4x100 team qualified for the NCAA regional with a time of 45.69 seconds. The team was consisted of Janet Carothers, Felicia Paulding, Emma Bowers and Aneesha Lane.
In the women's 4x400 Western Carolina took home first place with a time of 3:48.15 and the Catamounts "B" team finished in second place with a time of 3:53.02.
In the men's 4x400 Western Carolina broke last year's record in the event with a time of 3:12.73. The team of Thomas Funderburk, Benny Davis, Manteo Mitchell and Dominique Young qualified for the NCAA regional with their finish.
In the women's 3000-meter steeplechase event Leach Nicholson finished in second place with a time of 12:06.36.
Western Carolina returns next weekend to participate in the Sea Ray Relays hosted by Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.
Wofford
DURHAM, N.C. - The Wofford men’s and women’s track team completed its third outdoor meet of the season over the weekend as they competed in the Duke Asics Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium hosted by Duke University. On the men’s side the Terriers had three individuals set new personal records in their respective events.
Andy Vess had a great weekend for the Terrier men as he set a new personal record in the Men’s Javelin Throw. Vess set his new mark at 55.25 meters (164-10). The mark by Vess beats his previous best throw by nearly 24 feet and placed him 12th overall out of 26 competitors. His new PR also ranks him eighth in the Southern Conference.
Elias Contis had another solid showing for the Terriers as he set a new personal record in the men’s developmental 200-meter run. Contis new PR of 22.72 put him in the second position out of 16 individuals. Also with the time of 22.72, Contis is currently ranked eighth in the South Conference.
The third Terrier on the men’s side to set a new personal record was Brian Smith in the men’s developmental 400-meter run. Smith ran a 50.72 putting him second in his flight and fifth overall out of a field of 29. Smith’s time currently ranks him ninth in the Southern Conference.
On the women’s side, Caroline Burdette ran a time of 2:30.82 in the women’s developmental 800-meter run placing her in the seventh position in her flight and 62nd out of 77 in the field.
Both track teams return to action on Saturday as they travel to Greenville, S.C., to compete in the Furman Invitational hosted by Furman University.
