Wofford 6, Chattanooga 1

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -  The Wofford men's tennis team picked up its second Southern Conference win of the weekend on Sunday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center as the Terriers rolled past the visiting Chattanooga Mocs 6-1.  The Terriers have now won three straight conference matches and four of its last five.

 

Wofford continued its stellar doubles play as it has in previous Southern Conference matches to grab a 1-0 lead on the Mocs as the Terriers took wins on two of three courts.  Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy wasted no time in putting away Tyler Pullen and Alex Butnarcuic 8-1 on court No. 2.  Scott Collins and Tinus van Wyk then clinched the doubles point for the Terriers as they used two service breaks to get past R. van de Bovenkamp and Sam Parfitt 8-4.  Stuart Robertson and Danny Manlow nearly pulled off the Terrier sweep but they were outlasted by Peter Sauska and Pavel Vostrikov in a tiebreaker 8-7 (2).

 

Bartholomy gave the Terriers a quick 2-0 leaded after the start of singles play as he dominated Rudell 6-0, 6-0 on court No. 6.  Manlow picked up the first set in his match on court No. 2 and was up two love in the second when his opponent Vostrikov retired due to a back injury.  For the third time this year, van Wyk clinched the match for the Terriers as he had no trouble dispatching Parfitt on court No. 4 6-2, 6-0. Donald  then gave the Terriers a 5-0 lead on court No. 5 as he easily defeated Bovenkamp 6-2, 6-2.  Collins wrapped up the final win for the Terriers as he downed Butnarcuic 6-4, 6-0.

 

 

Georgia Southern 6, Davidson 1

 

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Davidson men?s tennis team wrapped up their two-match road swing with a trip to Georgia Southern on Sunday, but came up short in their bid to finish the weekend with a win, falling 6-1 in Southern Conference action.

 

Davidson, playing its second-to-last road match of the regular season, fell to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in league play. GSU ran its overall mark to 7-7-1 and 3-3-1 in SoCon action.

 

Earning the Wildcats lone point on the afternoon was sophomore Walker Lyons, who scored a third-set tie breaker win to pick up his second singles win of the weekend. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Lyons came back for a 7-5 decision in the second. Because the match was decided between the two teams, Lyons and Jayraj Jadeja played a super tie breaker, which Lyons took by the score of 10-5.

 

Senior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Arie Hefter both played well in a losing effort. Myers forced Gregory Bekkers at No. 3 to a third set, but came up short 6-1 in the deciding set. The two had split their first two sets by the count of 6-1 and 1-6.

 

Hefter dropped his first set 6-4 to Justin Flynn at No. 5, but did come back to force an extra game in the second staight. His day ended though, with a 7-5 setback.

 

 

College of Charleston 5, Samford 2

 

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's tennis team defeated Samford 5-2 in Southern Conference action on Sunday at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.

 

With the win, the Cougars move to 7-11 overall, 4-4 in the Southern Conference, while Samford drops to 6-12-1, 3-4-1 in the SoCon. Charleston returns to action on Wednesday, April 8th at Georgia Southern beginning at 2:30.

 

The Cougars got off to a fast start in doubles, as they took two of the three matches contested to take a team point. Charleston then took the match after winning four of the six matches played in singles.

 

In singles, Omer Abramovich was strong at number one singles, knocking off Richard Walsh in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. After dropping matches in the two and three spots, Mickael Trintignac defeated Brian Dushock 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the four spot and Mickael Boyer topped Oliver Reynolds 6-4, 4-6 6-3 at number five singles.

 

The Cougars rounded out the day in singles action with a victory, as Joe Nicolazzi defeated Carl Abalos at number six singles 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

 

 

Furman 6, UNC Greensboro 1

 

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Orcun Seyrek won his 20t h match of the season in grand fashion, but UNC Greensboro lost to Furman, 6-1, to put a serious damper on its hopes for a Southern Conference men’s tennis title.

 

Seyrek defeated Andy Juc, ranked No. 116 in the nation by ITA, 6-3 and 6-4, for UNCG’s lone point of the afternoon. Seyrek is now 20-3 on the season in making his case for Southern Conference Freshman of the Year. Seyrek is a perfect 7-0 in league play as UNCG’s No. 1 singles players.

 

The Paladins won a pair of three setters to keep the Spartans from getting too close in earning the victory and preserving their lead in the SoCon standings.
