SoCon Hall of Fame: Furman's Frank Selvy

Today is day eight of the Southern Conference’s 10-day preview leading up to the induction ceremony on May 4 of the inaugural 10 inductees in the 2009 SoCon Hall of Fame class. The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. (EDT) at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, S.C., where the conference office is located.

 

Today’s highlighted inductee is Furman’s Frank Selvy.

The 1954 United Press National Player of the Year, Selvy was a three-time All-American at Furman and was named SoCon Player of the year twice. He was the NCAA Division I leader in scoring for two seasons and still ranks fourth all-time with 2,538 career points. Selvy scored a Division I record 100 points in a win over Newberry on Feb. 13, 1954. He was the number one overall draft pick by the Baltimore Bullets in the 1954 NBA Draft and spent nine seasons in the league.

 

  • Led NCAA in scoring as a junior (29.5) and senior (41.7)
  • First player in NCAA history to score 1,000 points in a season and average more than 40 ppg
  • Scored all-time record 100 points in a single game, February 13, 1954
  • Voted UPI national Player of the Year, 1954
  • Three-time All-American, twice voted SoCon Player of the Year
  • Led Furman to 59-21 record in three years
  • No. 1 overall pick in 1954 NBA draft
