CofC Women’s Golf Earns At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament

Charleston, S.C. -- The National Collegiate Athletic Conference (NCAA) announced today via teleconference that the College of Charleston women’s golf team will be heading to the NCAA East Regional at the University of Florida Golf Club in Gainesville, Fla., as an at-large team.  The NCAA East Regional is May 7-9th.

“This is the reward for a very successful season,” said Head Coach Jamie Futrell, who is in his 13th year with the Cougars.”  “When we defeated #9 Georgia and #20 Ohio State at Bryan Park few weeks ago, I felt like we had secured a bid.”

“I feel like we have the firepower to compete well in the upcoming regional, but we will have to play our best to advance to the finals.”

The women’s team earned an at-large bid and will be making its third trip in four years to an NCAA Regional.

The Cougars made their first NCAA appearance in 2006, competing in the East Regional held at Bryan Park in Browns Summit, N.C.  The team finished 15th behind Angie Hill, who shot a tournament low and CofC record 67 in the third round.

In 2007, Charleston competed at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La., coming away with a 16th-place finish.  Senior Steffi Kirchmayr (Pocking, Germany) led the Cougars, tying for 26th with a three-round total of 217.

The women’s golf team took home five top six finishes out of eight tournaments this regular season.  The Cougars won the Stono Cup and finished tied for fourth at the Palmetto Intercollegiate and Challenge at Wolfdancer.  Steffi Kirchmayr and Fiona Puyo tied for individual medalist honors at the Stono Cup, while Kirchmayr tied for third at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, the largest women’s golf tournament in the Country with 43 teams.

Charleston recently competed at the Southern Conference tournament held in Hilton, Head, S.C. and finished fourth.  Fiona Puyo (Pau, France) led the team with a tie for seventh.  Her and teammate Kirchmayr earned SoCon All-Conference honors.

Kirchmayr, Puyo and Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.) competed for the Cougars in CofC’s last NCAA appearance.  Rapp tied for 81st, while Puyo tied for 95th in 2007.  Kirchmayr was selected as an individual in last season’s NCAA Central Regional where she placed 13th.

The NCAA Finals will be held May 19-22nd at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
