SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston freshman Katie Forbes has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week while Furman junior Lana Mackey has been named Pitcher of the Week for all games from April 20-26, the league office announced Monday. The awards are chosen in a vote of the league's softball sports information directors.
Forbes had an impressive week at the plate and on the mound for the Cougars as the team went 4-1, including a three-game sweep of conference-rival UNC Greensboro. The Odessa, Fla., product hit .500 for the week with eight RBIs, two doubles and one home run. In the circle, Forbes went 2-0 on the week with a 0.00 ERA in 12 innings of work.
Mackey led Furman to a 5-0 week on the strength of a 3-0 week in the circle. The Perry, Ga., native had an ERA of 0.35 after allowing only 11 hits and one earned run in 20 innings of work. Mackey also struck out 29 batters on the week, including a career-high 13 batters in a 12-0 victory over Presbyterian. She also recorded the 500th strikeout of her career in a game against Western Carolina. At the plate, Mackey batted .308 with a home run and four RBIs. The award is Mackey’s second Pitcher of the Week scroll of the season.
Hitters also receiving nominations were Appalachian State’s Katie Boyd, Samford’s Amy Gonzalez, Furman’s Morgan Hughey, Georgia Southern’s Amanda Glover, Chattanooga’s Michelle Fuzzard, UNC Greensboro’s Alex Emeterio and Elon’s Jaimie Rao.
Pitchers also receiving nominations were Georgia Southern’s Brianna Streetmon, Samford’s Robyn Harmon, College of Charleston’s Terri Mesko, Chattanooga’s Brooke Loudermilk and Appalachian State’s Terri Fister.
