SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Western Carolina sprinter Dominique Young has been named Southern Conference Track Athlete of the Week while Samford pole vaulter Patrick Wells has been named Field Athlete of the Week for all meets from April 16-22, the conference office announced Thursday. Athlete of the Week is voted on by the league’s head outdoor track and field coaches.
Young ran a personal best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 21.03 in the 200-meter dash and was part of the winning 4x100-meter relay that posted an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 40.07 at the Western Carolina Invitational.
Wells vaulted 16-6.75 (5.05m) at the Auburn Invitational. The vault was a school record, Regional qualifying mark and first in the SoCon this season. The award is Wells’ second of the season.
Also nominated for this week’s track award was Western Carolina’s Benny Davis.
Also nominated for this week’s field award was Western Carolina’s Matt Evans.
