SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Furman sophomore Monica Arguello has been named Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches from April 13-19, the league office announced Tuesday. It is the second time this season she has earned the weekly award.  Arguello finished 2-0 in both singles and doubles competition last week as the Paladins posted wins over Wofford (7-0) and Davidson (6-1). The Player of the Week award is voted on by the league’s sports information directors.

Arguello finished the conference season with a perfect 10-0 mark at No. 2 singles for the Paladins.  She knocked off Wofford’s Ashley Lawrence (6-1, 6-1) and Davidson’s Virginia Berry (6-1, 6-2) last week to improve to 16-6 on the year.  Arguello is now 19-0 against league competition over the past two years.    

Competing at No. 1 doubles with teammate Laura Gioia, Arguello helped the Paladins’ top doubles team finish the week 2-0.  Arguello and Gioia downed Wofford’s Lawrence and Cayley Wetzig, 8-1 before topping Davidson’s top tandem of Berry and Michelle Fanney, 8-3.  Arguello and Gioia finished the regular season 13-8 in doubles play, including a 9-1 mark against conference competition.

Also nominated for this week’s award was Elon’s Anna Milian, Georgia Southern’s Melanie Rolle and UNC Greensboro’s Alejandra Guerro.
