Elon 6, Appalachian State 1
BOONE, N.C. -- On a chilly afternoon at the ASU Tennis Courts, the Elon Phoenix picked up a 6-1 decision over the host Appalachian State Mountaineers. With the loss, the Apps fell to 8-15 overall and 2-7 in league action, while the Phoenix improved to 11-11 on the season and finished 5-5 in SoCon play.
In doubles action the Apps were unable to notch a win as Elon won all three doubles matches.
At the number one doubles spot, Elon's duo of Anna Milian and Paige Kensrue bested Olivia Stannard and Gisela Fernandez 8-0, while Caroline Mauch and Lindsay King also faced the same fate dropping an 8-1 decision at the number two position to Elon's Daeen Kloppers and Hayley Wahl. At the number three spot, Whitney Butcher and Elisa Simonetti knocked off Amanda Cash and Laura Janke 8-7 (7-5).
In singles action, Laura Graybill picked up a win over Fernandez at the number five spot in two sets (6-2, 6-2), while Cash was defeated by Milian 6-3, 6-4 at the number one spot.
At number two, Elon's Kensrue upended Cash 6-3, 6-4, while Mauch notched the Apps lone win of the day after dropping the first set 6-4, the junior came back in the second and was winning 5-3, before Simonetti retired.
Lauren Sessoms also earned a win at the number four spot, taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Heather Prior.
Furman 7, Wofford 0
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Furman seniors Laura Gioia and Lauren Tomory led Furman to a victory in the final home match of their careers as the Lady Paladins defeated the visiting Wofford Terriers, 7-0, in Southern Conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center. Gioia and Tomory have never lost a conference regular-season match during their four years in the Furman uniform.
Furman improved to 14-7 overall and 9-0 in the league, extending its conference winning streak to 97 matches. Wofford dropped to 2-16 on the season and 1-9 in the SoCon.
Gioia rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Wofford’s Cayley Wetzig at the top position. With her tenth consecutive win, Gioia improved to 16-4 on the season and a perfect 9-0 against league opponents. She also teamed with sophomore Monica Arguello to defeat Wetzig and Ashley Lawrence, 8-1, at number one doubles. Tomory won her 15th match of the season, defeating Sonia Anand, 6-1, 6-1, at number five singles. She paired with sophomore Jennifer Betts for an 8-5 victory against Haley Baird and Sabrina Smyers at number two doubles.
Arguello remained unbeaten in SoCon action, scoring a straight-set win over the Lawrence. The sophomore has yet to lose a SoCon singles match during her career. Junior Jessica Preeg posted her sixth straight win, topping Baird at number three singles. Betts and freshman Susan Bitetti also recorded singles victories in the match.
College of Charleston 6, Georgia Southern 1
STATESBORO, Ga. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team defeated Georgia Southern 6-1 in Southern Conference action this afternoon at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 19-4, 7-1 in the Southern Conference, while Georgia Southern fell to 12-6, 6-3 in the SoCon. Charleston returns to action on Friday when they host Samford at 1:30.
The Cougars got off to a good start in doubles action sweeping three matches and then took five of the six matches played in singles to coast to victory.
In singles action, Laura Borza won in three sets (6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-4)) over Kristi Kegerreis in the number one spot, while Holly Dowse was a straight set victor over Ali Beavers at number two singles 6-3, 6-2.
In the number three spot, Caroline Newman rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Molly Maddox and Keely Mulligan was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at number five singles over Jessica Fuller. Kinsey Casey rounded out the Charleston singles winners on the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Shea Huxtable at the number six spot.
