Elon 6, UNC Greensboro 1
ELON, N.C. ? Andrey Bubnov won a three-setter over Oscar Podlewski at No. 2 singles, but that was UNC Greensboro’s only victory of the afternoon in falling to No. 61-ranked Elon, 6-1, in Southern Conference men’s tennis action Wednesday afternoon.
Bubnov won the opening set over Podlewski, 6-4, before Podlewski responded with a 6-3 win in the second set. Bubnov won the match, which last just under two hours, when he won a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-7.
In the feature match of the day, UNCG freshman Orcun Seyrek had his 14-match winning streak snapped by No. 76-ranked Damon Gooch in a two-and-a-half hour marathon. Seyrek won the opening set by a 6-4 score, before Gooch won the second set 6-4 and a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-6.
With the loss, Seyrek is now 18-2 on the spring with both losses coming to ranked players. He is 23-4 overall on the year and 8-1 in Southern Conference action.
With the win, Elon (18-5, 6-1) clinched the No. 2 seed in next week’s Southern Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by Elon. UNCG (13-7, 6-3) will either be the No. 3 or No. 4 seed. The Spartans are tied with Wofford for third place at 6-3 with the Terriers holding the tie-breaker.
Furman 5, Wofford 2
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Furman men’s tennis team kept its Southern Conference unbeaten streak alive with a 5-2 win against the visiting Wofford Terriers on Wednesday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center. The Paladins (18-7, 9-0) won their 21st consecutive conference match, ending Wofford’s (12-10, 6-3) four-match winning streak in the process. Furman also remained undefeated on its home court, extending its streak to 24 straight wins at Mickel Tennis Center.
Furman took the early advantage in the match, winning a hotly contested doubles point. Paladin duo Chris Motes and Chris Rhyne earned an 8-4 win over Paul Bartholomy and Alan Donald at position two. Jordan Walters and Andrei Chvetsov clinched the point for Furman with a 9-7 victory against Wofford’s Scott Collins and Tinus Van Wyk at number three. The Terriers’ Danny Manlow and Stuart Robertson handed Andy Juc and Bo Ladyman their first loss of the season with a 9-8 (5) win at the top doubles position.
In singles, Juc opened with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Robertson at number one. Juc improved to 15-7 on the season, 8-1 in the SoCon. Sophomore Sawyer Duncan improved to 21-2 on the year, rolling by Bartholomy, 6-0, 6-3, at number six. At position two, Ladyman beat out Manlow in a three-setter for his 17th victory of the season. Motes rebounded after dropping the first set to defeat Collins, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3, at number four.
