SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Furman University’s men’s and women’s teams have both garnered national rankings in the latest polls from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), released April 14. The Furman women’s team is ranked No. 66, while the men’s team is ranked 69th. The College of Charleston (19-4, 7-1 SoCon) women’s team is ranked No. 70, while the Elon men’s team is ranked 61st nationally.
Furman’s (14-6, 8-0) Laura Gioia leads all Southern Conference females in the rankings, as she is ranked No. 19 in the most recent rankings. Gioia is 15-4 and has won her last nine matches at No. 1 singles for the Paladins. Teammate Monica Arguello is ranked No. 80 in the most recent rankings. Arguello is 14-6 in singles competition this spring, including an 8-0 mark in conference play. She is 13-6 at No. 2 singles and has won nine of her last 10 matches. UNC Greensboro’s Alejandra Guerra is ranked No. 88. She owns a 13-3 record this spring at No. 1 singles, which ranks as the best record among SoCon competitors. Guerra is 7-1 in conference play for the Spartans at No. 1 singles.
Elon’s (17-5, 7-1) men’s team has been led by junior Damon Gooch, the No. 76 player in the most recent men’s singles rankings. He is 13-7 at No. 1 singles for the Phoenix. Gooch and Philip Nemec are the No. 34 doubles team in the nation according to the most recent rankings. Gooch and Nemec are 19-4 at No. 1 doubles this spring and are 7-1 in conference action.
Furman (17-7, 8-0) senior Andy Juc is ranked No. 106 with a record of 14-7 this spring. Juc is 7-1 in conference play and competes at No. 1 singles for the Paladins. Juc and Bo Ladyman are 11-0 in doubles competition this spring and are ranked as the No. 51 doubles tandem in the country. Juc and Ladyman are 7-0 in league play at No. 1 doubles for the Paladins.
