SoCon Announces Creation of William V. Moore Scholarship

Postgraduate scholarship honors the legacy of the late President of the SoCon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced on Tuesday the establishment of the William V. Moore Graduate Scholarship presented by Sharp Business Systems, created in memory of Dr. William V. “Bill” Moore, former faculty athletics representative at College of Charleston and President of the Southern Conference.

“We’re grateful to the people at Sharp for their support of this scholarship which is a fitting tribute to Bill Moore,” said Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino. “He was a true advocate for the student-athletes of the Southern Conference and this award will remind us of his hard work on their behalf.”

Moore, Distinguished Professor of Political Science at College of Charleston, died on March 25 after a sudden illness.

In addition to his extensive academic involvement, Moore also served at the public address announcer for College of Charleston men’s basketball games and was a familiar face around campus.

Moore was also active in the governance of the Southern Conference, previously serving on the Executive Committee and as Vice President prior to becoming President of the league in 2007. As President, Moore was instrumental in increasing funding for Southern Conference championships. He also played an important role in the addition of Samford to the league, and Moore supported the growth of Conference television and video streaming efforts in his position on the Executive Committee.

The William V. Moore Graduate Scholarship presented by Sharp Business Systems, which is one of eight postgraduate scholarships awarded by the SoCon’s Graduate Scholarship Committee, will be presented each year to a deserving male or female student-athlete in the league to provide opportunities for postgraduate studies. The first such award will be issued at the Southern Conference Honors Dinner on May 27 in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
