SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? UNC Greensboro leftfielder Brittany Ausley has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week while Furman pitcher Lana Mackey has been named Pitcher of the Week for all games from April 6-12, the conference office announced Monday. The weekly awards are voted on by the league’s softball sports information directors.
Ausley, a junior, hit .545, clubbed two home runs and drove in eight RBIs in helping the Spartans to a 4-1 record on the week. The Wake Forest, N.C., native began the week with a 2-for-3 performance against N.C. Central with an inside-the-park solo home run and a two-run single. In a 6-3 victory in game one of the series against Samford, Ausley hit a tie-breaking three-run home run in the sixth inning to give the Spartans the 6-3 victory.
Mackey tossed six scoreless innings, while allowing only one hit as the junior went 2-0 in a pair of Furman victories over the College of Charleston this past weekend. In a 9-0 victory, the Perry, Ga., native fanned seven batters and allowed one hit. Coming into game two in relief in the eighth inning with the go-ahead runner on first and no outs, Mackey retired three straight batters to get out of the jam. In all, she didn’t allow a hit to the final 22 batters she faced.
Also nominated for this week’s Player of the Week award were Georgia Southern’s Amanda Hall, Furman’s Stephanie Cushing, Chattanooga’s Tiffany Baker, Samford’s Amanda Barrs and Appalachian State’s Brittany Gaston.
Also nominated for this week’s Pitcher of the Week award were Chattanooga’s Michelle Fuzzard, UNC Greensboro’s Hannah Angel, Georgia Southern’s Kristan Glover, Samford’s Amanda Barrs and Appalachian State’s Ashley Stubbs.
