SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Elon second baseman Bennett Davis has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Western Carolina pitcher Corey Martin has been chosen as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from April 6-12.
Davis homered twice in the same inning in Elon’s 25-6 victory over College of Charleston on Saturday. The senior now has 27 career homers, tied for fifth in program history. He had at least two hits in all four of Elon’s games last week and helped the Phoenix to its first-ever series win over College of Charleston. In the series opener against CofC, the Katy, Texas, native tied career highs with four hits and five RBIs while his two walks in the nightcap also equaled a career-best. Davis slugged .700 and boasted an OBP of 1.312 during Elon’s 3-1 week.
Martin made one start among his two appearances on the week without allowing an earned run. The senior went 1-0, matching his career-long outing of 8.0 innings while limiting a potent Georgia Southern offense to one unearned run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. The Yadkinville, N.C., native also pitched one inning of one unearned run, one-hit relief at Kennesaw State.
The SoCon’s weekly awards are voted on by the league’s baseball sports information directors.
Other hitters earning consideration for the award were Western Carolina’s Mitchell Hatley, Georgia Southern’s Ty Wright, Samford’s Bo Smith, The Citadel’s Richard Jones, College of Charleston’s Joey Bergman, Davidson’s Drew Gadaire, Wofford’s Kyle Behrendt, UNC Greensboro’s Ed Jayjack, Furman’s Will Miller and Appalachian State’s Wes Hobson.
Other pitchers nominated were Appalachian State’s Zach Quate, UNC Greensboro’s Rob Gilliam, Elon’s Ken Ferrer, Georgia Southern’s Colin Snow, Davidson’s Chris Lamb, The Citadel’s Matt Crim and Wofford’s J.D. Osborne.
