KNOXVILLE, TENN. - Appalachian State University men's track and field continued with its dominating performances over the weekend, as the Black and Gold had yet another solid outing at the Sea Ray Relays held at the University of Tennessee.
Senior Daniel Neal earned a 12th-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, running the race in 14.58, while John Svoboda was solid as well, coming in 13th in the 400-meter run with a time of 48.51.
Chris Moen led the Apps in the 1500-meter run, as the freshman came in 16th overall with a time of 3:55.85.
In the throwing events, Jerod Gardner placed 12th in the discus with a toss of 155-03, while sophomore Tim Daly qualified for regionals in the hammer throw, coming in fifth in the event with a throw of 185-11.
Rounding out the meet, freshman Darius Purcell took home fourth in the high jump, leaping 6-6.75.
ASU returns to action Friday April 17 as they host the Appalachian Invitational at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Appalachian State - women
KNOXVILLE, TENN. - Appalachian State University women's track and field continued with their solid performances over the weekend, as the Black and Gold were impressive at the Sea Ray Relays held at the University of Tennessee.
Senior Jen Povick led the Apps in the 1500-meter run, finishing ninth overall with a time of 4:31.28. The time moves her into fourth on ASU's all-time list in the event.
In the triple and long jump, Danielle Thorpe placed fifth and 13th, respectively, leaping 18-6.50 in the long jump and 40-0 in the triple jump.
Lily Tallent and Whitney Smyre were solid in the throwing events, as Tallent came in 16th in the discus with a toss of 138-7 moving her into eighth all-time in the event and Smyre finished eighth in the hammer with a throw of 158-2.
Sophomore Rebecca Hazeltine had one of the strongest performances of the meet for ASU, as she qualified for NCAA Regionals in the high jump, leaping a new personal best of 5-8.75. The performance also moves her into third on Appalachian's all-time list in the event.
Capping off the action, Meghan Gaffney came in fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase, running the race in 10:51.11.
College of Charleston
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The College of Charleston women’s track and field team took part in the Furman Invitational on Saturday.
Top finishers on the day included the 4x100-meter relay team of Laura Call, Ariel Hatcher, Saskia Kalmeijer, and Mary Zolga who placed first in the event with a time of 49.26, while Zolga also finished first in the 400-meter dash with at time of 57.54.
Hatcher also registered a top finish in the 200-meter dash with at time of 25.65, while Isabel Boersma finished first in the long jump with a 17-04.50-meter effort. Boersma also placed first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.52
Jessica Cumbee was the top finisher in the pole vault with a 10-06.00 meter effort and Emily Smith was tops in the high jump with a 5-06.00 meter performance.
Other top finishers on the day for Charleston included Brynne Johnson, who placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.25 and Alyssa D'Orazio finished second in the 1500-meters with a time of 4:45.82. Hilary Vigh was a third-place finisher in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.25, Kristen Wolfe was second in the 800-meters in 2:18.56 and Laura Call was a second-place finisher in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.71.
The Cougars return to action on April 25th when they take part in the 2009 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Statesboro, Ga.
The Citadel
Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel Track and Field program sent split squads to three meets this past weekend with Brendan Kight highlighting the action by winning the 3000-meter run at the Chanticleer Classic. Meanwhile, Jodi Whittle seat a school record in the 400-meter hurdles at the Sea Ray Relays while Sarah Creel and Shaquill Smith recorded a pair of runner-up finishes at the Furman Invitational.
Kight’s time of 8:54.73 is fourth in The Citadel’s top 10 all-time list as he won the race at the Chanticleer Classic. Whittle ran a personal-best time of 1:04.64 to finish 16th out of 37 athletes at the Sea Ray Relays in the 400 hurdles.
Chanticleer Classic, Conway, S.C.
Also at the Chanticleer Classic, Brillyance Gilchrist-Poteat broke the freshman record once again in the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:06.56. She finished fourth in the meet, setting a new personal record and earning The Citadel’s third all-time spot. James Harris posted a mark of 6-2 for second place in the high jump and Chris Fallis also ran the 3000 with a time of 9:06.10 for third place.
Matt Earls threw for a third-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 140-10 and Quintin Turner tossed the discus 143-0. Emily Green and Austen Ditzhazy finished fourth in the hammer and javelin, respectively. Green threw the third all-time school record of 137-3 while Ditzhazy posted a mark of 139-0. Green then turned around and finished fifth in the javelin with a mark of 101-11.
Christopher Castagno also finished fifth in the hammer throwing 145-8 and Gilchrist-Poteat ran the 100-meter high hurdles for sixth place recording a time of 15.55. Turner and Earls threw the hammer with Turner earning a mark of 136-10 for seventh place and Earls followed in eighth with a mark of 131-9.
Sea Ray Relays, Knoxville, Tenn.
At the prestigious Sea Ray Relays, Jamel Brown ran the 100 high hurdles posting a time of 14.79 to finish 18th out of 29 and Zach Johnson placed 26th out of 45 in the 800-meter run running a time of 1:55.00. Megan Jenkins finished 46th in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:56.89.
Furman Invitational, Greenville, S.C.
Creel and Smith had the top Bulldog finishes at the Furman Invitational. Creel ran a time of 12.83 for second place in the 100 and Smith jumped a mark of 46-0 for second in the triple jump. Smith also finished third in the high jump with a mark of 5-8 and competed in the long jump, placing sixth with a mark of 19-3.
Aaron Bonilla finished third with a time of 1:04.00 in the 400 intermediate hurdles and Lauren Fleming placed third in the pole vault, jumping 8-6. Kasandra Polson threw a personal-best and is now sixth all-time in The Citadel’s history books with her 33-9.5 mark in the shot put, earning fourth overall. Preston Kight jumped the triple jump with a mark of 37-7.50 and Theresa Johansen finished fifth in the hammer posting 127-6.
Polson also threw the javelin for fifth with a mark of 80-1.50 and Kight placed fifth in the long jump recording a mark of 19-6.5. In the shot put, Corey Robinson placed fifth with a mark of 41-2. Francesca McCrary ran the 400 dash and is now eighth in the all-time school charts with her sixth place finish time of 1:04.40 and Fleming finished sixth in the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:15.45.
Joseph Tkach, Caitlyn Lees, Shane Woodard and Mia Trevino all finished seventh in their individual events. Tkach ran the 1500 for a time of 4:13.11 and Lees ran the 200 dash recording a time of 31.06. Trevino thew the javelin and shot put for a mark of 74-4 and 32-2, respectively. Trevino is now eighth all-time for her throw in the shot put and Woodard jumped 17-10 in the long jump.
Corey Robinson and Whitney Nave both finished eighth in the javelin. Robinson recorded 137-2 and Nave posted a mark of 70-6.5. Nave also placed eighth in the hammer with a mark of 121-3 and Johansen had a mark of 31-5 for ninth place in the shot put.
The Citadel will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to participate in the North Florida Osprey Challenge on Saturday, April 18 before preparing for the 2009 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on April 25-26 in Statesboro, Ga.
Davidson ? men
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Alex Hoyt set a new school record in the 3,000-meter run to lead the Davidson men’s track & field team at the Joe Hilton UNC Invitational, held on the campus of the University of North Carolina over the weekend.
Hoyt tripped the tape in 8:31.61, breaking the previous record set by teammate Thad Sieracki earlier this season. The performance was good for third place in the event for Hoyt, who was followed by classmate Lance Harden’s fourth place finish with a time of 8:39.53, which was in the top-ten performances in school history at 3,000. Joining the two seniors in the top ten for the meet was Greg Marcil, who brought home seventh place, crossing the line in 8:59.36.
Competing in the javelin, sophomore Jake Leonard tossed the second-longest throw on the team this season, recording a top distance of 42.84 meters, which placed him 13th.
In the 1,500-meter run, the ?Cats had five runners post times within two seconds of each other, led by Peter Bruton’s mark of 4:03.96. He was followed by Blake Evitt (4:04.27), Ian Tupper (4:04.27), Charlie Schmitt (4:04.63) and Ryan Hopkins (4:06.29).
Freshman Taylor Martin came in just out of the top ten in his first career 400-meter hurdle performance, finishing 12th overall with a time of 58.58 in the finals.
The Wildcats will now turn their focus to preparation for the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, which will take place on April 25-26 in Statesboro, Ga. Davidson will look to improve on their fourth-place finish at least year’s championships.
Davidson - women
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- With a 10th-place finish in the 100-meter dash, Kim Colley set a Davidson standard, as the Wildcat women's track and field team competed at the 2009 Joe Hilton UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill over the weekend.
Colley finished with a time of 12.43 in the 100, narrowly bettering her own school-record of 12.44 from a season ago. She also finished a team-best 16th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.44.
Sophomore Danielle Ruggieri finished fifth with a time of 10:23.91 to lead the Wildcats in the 3000-meter run. Classmate Heather Conarroe (9th, 10:47.15) and senior Emily King (10th, 10:50.73) also made strong showings for the 'Cats in the event.
The Wildcat women will now gear up for the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, held on the campus of Georgia Southern April 25 and 26
Elon
Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Elon 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Amy Salek, Sarah Skogen, Melissa Turowski and Jennine Strange set another school record with a time of 3:52.53 to highlight the Phoenix performance at the UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. The time was good for a third-place finish overall.
Freshman sprinter Dana Cataldo tied the school record in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 12.51. She now shares the record with former Elon great Dominique Price who set the record back in 2006.
Salek put forth another great showing on the season, coming in second overall in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 56.26.
Junior mid-distance specialist Strange put forth a great performance in the women's 800-meter run, placing 5th overall and as the fourth best collegiate runner with a time of 2:14.33. She finished just behind two Michigan State runners and Ashley Verplank of UNC who took the win.
Sophomore Emily Fournier placed fourth overall and had the third best collegiate time in the women's 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:20.18, finishing just behind Michigan State duo Michelle Mercer and Rebekah Smeltzer.
Junior hurdler Andrea March started off her day with a seasonal best time of 14.93 in the 100-meter hurdles. She later went on to set another season best in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.98. Her time in the 400 was good enough for a third-place finish overall and currently keeps her atop the SoCon performance list.
Senior Colleen McCarthy was the fourth-place finisher and third overall collegiate in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase (11:54.53). Teammate Justine Schulerud wasn't far behind placing seventh overall (sixth collegiate).
Elon’s 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Salek, Cataldo, Sarah Skogen and Veronica Day placed third overall with a time of 48.38. Their time was nearly a full second ahead of NC State’s team with relays from UNC and Michigan State just nipping the Phoenix.
Day lept to a fourth-place finish in the women's long jump (18-00.25). Teammate Lauren Hawkesworth placed seventh in the women's triple jump with a leap of 38-02.25.
Sophomore thrower Justine Robertson placed sixth in the women's javelin throw with a season best throw of 35.57 meters.
The Phoenix will continue their season next Saturday at North Carolina A&T Friendship and Freedom Games before heading to Statesboro, Ga. for the SoCon championships the following weekend.
Furman
Greenville, S.C. - The Furman men's and women's track and field teams hosted the 11th annual Furman Invitational and Blue Shoes Mile event under sunny skies at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track & Field and Kelsey-West Track on Saturday afternoon
Furman's Patrick Morgan was the lone Paladin to compete in the Blue Shoes Event. The senior ran a 4:12.77 and finished seventh overall.
Four Paladin runners turned in first-place finishes in the meet including freshman Chloe Koswalski who posted a career-best time in the 5000-meter run to win the event with a time of 18:05.89. Junior Brittany Johnson also competed in the 5000 and crossed the finish line in fifth place with a mark of 18:47.08. Senior Lauren Tomory, a member of the Lady Paladin tennis team, took sixth place with her time of 18:54.73. Freshman Charlee Coggins and sophomore Julia Bryant finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the 800-meter, sophomore Monique Ositelu placed first, running the event in a time of 2:15.01. Senior Lindsey Barker was in the top 10 in the 800, running a 2:21.55 to finish sixth. Freshman Rebecca Shelton ran the 3000-meter for the first time in her career, finishing on top with a mark of 11:46.52.
Two of the Furman women's relay teams finished in second place at the Invite. The 4x100-meter (Starr Belmont, Ashley Tucker, Monique Ositelu) ran a 50.61 and the 4x400-meter (Nodia Robinson, Belmont, Ositelu, Tucker) ran a 4:02.75.
On the men's side, rookie Lee Gilmer ran a personal-best 3:58.16 in the 1500-meter to cross the finish line first. Senior Joe Tenini ran a 4:16.30 in the same event to finish tenth. In the 5000, senior Alex Plasencia crossed the finish line in second place with a 15:28.29. Freshmen Chris Caldwell, Knox Sutterfield and Jay Miller took seventh, eighth and ninth place, respectively. Senior Jeff O'Connell grabbed second place in the 3000-meter Steeplechase with a mark of 9:46.52. Rookie Teddy Hess also turned in a top-10 performance with a sixth place showing in the 400-meter. Hess ran a 52.84.
The Furman track & field teams will be back in action on April 25-26 at the Southern Conference Championships in Statesboro, Ga.
UNC Greensboro
CHAPEL HILL, NC ? Freshman Joey Thompson continued to shatter school records this season as he broke the school record in the 1,500-meter run by over two seconds to lead UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon at the UNC Invitational.
Thompson’s time of 3:54.75 was almost two and a half seconds better than the previous school record in the event.
TJ Wyatt was also a top perform on the men’s side as his time of 1:54.33 in the 800-meter run was the fourth-best time in school history
On the women’s side, Sherrika Jordan ran the 3,000-meter run in 10:29.69. Her time was the third-best in school history.
Danielle Merriman also had an impressive performance, as her time in the 400-meter run was the fourth-best in school history.
UNCG will return to action next weekend as the Spartans compete at the Davidson Invitational on Saturday, April 18.
Samford
OXFORD, Miss. ---- The Samford University track and field team fared well Saturday at the Ole Miss Invitational. Many personal records were set by Bulldog competitors while several placed in the top 10 of their respective events.
The Bulldogs were up against teams like Alabama, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Memphis and Jacksonville State.
Hillary Neal won the 3000-meter steeplechase in her first time ever running the event with a regional qualifying time of 10:29.83 while Brittney Harrison finished 13th in her first time with a time of 12:57.26. Andrea Seccafien placed fourth in the 5000-meter run with a personal best of 17:51.75 while Katie Almand finished 18th with a time of 20:08.32 and Alli Keithan took 20th with a time of 20:49.15.
Cori Christensen placed second in the 800-meter run with a personal best of 2:11.54, just a little less than two seconds shy of a school record. Jessica Van Ausdall finished eighth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:43.71. Ashley Dance ran a personal best 25.21 in the 200-meter dash while also finishing 16th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.87.
Scott Cope annihilated his personal best by four seconds in the 1500 as he finished ninth with a time of 3:59.06. Blaise Carie followed close behind in 11th place with a time of 4:00.18 and Patrick Ollinger placed 19th with a personal best of 4:05.38. Matt Bryson (4:16.31), Joel Rogers (4:22.81) and Dan Hall (4:25.02) also ran personal bests in the event. Carie also placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a personal best of 9:33.49.
Cavan Corcoran placed 10th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of personal best of 14.93 while also running the 400-meter hurdles in 58.31. Donald Cooper placed 21st with a time of 16.33 in the 110-meter hurdles and Chas Ketihan ran a personal best of 17.49. Jordan Cole ran a personal best of 58.93 in the 400-meter hurdles.
In the field events, Christy Myers tied for ninth in the high jump with a height of 5-1.00 while Mary Barron vaulted 10-11.75 in the women's pole vault to tie for 10th place. Elyse Rippe set a personal best of 15-00.75 in the long jump and in the javelin with a toss of 82-06.
Cooper posted a personal best of 6-02.75 in the men's high jump to tie for 11th place while Patrick Wells finished sixth in the pole vault with a height of 14-11.00 and Zac Epperson placed 13th with a vault of 13-11.25. Cooper also posted a personal best in the long jump with a leap of 21.00.75 while Asa Ackerson just missed a personal best with a jump of 20-02.50. Chas Keithan jumped a personal best of 19-02.50.
Thomas Oliver took fourth in the javelin with a toss of 172-05. Kyle Brown (126-07) and Kyle Kirby (126-04) finished 19th and 20th, respectively, in the discus throw while Chris Davis placed 22nd in the shot put with a toss of 43-10.75. Brown set a new school record and finished 14th in the hammer throw with a toss of 148-01 while Kirby (127-00) also finished 21st and Fee (124-02) placed 22nd.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next Saturday, April 18, as they participate in the Auburn Invitational.
Chattanooga
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- Junior transfer Anneli Uys ran a region-qualifying time in the 1500-meter run Friday evening at Tom Black Track at the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and the women’s 4x800-meter relay team broke a 12-year-old school record on Saturday.
Uys placed fifth in the 1500 with a time of 4:27.18, more than three seconds faster than her Southern Conference leading time heading into the event netting her a personal record as well.
“We’re very, very happy with her,” UTC Head Coach Bill Gautier said. “She has a great deal of talent. “It was a huge race and she is very competitive. We went to this event hoping to get her qualified for the region and it happened.”
The women’s 4x800 relay team of Lauran Anderson, Shelley Taylor, Anneli Uys and Emily Wood, set a school record Saturday afternoon in a time of 8:59.70, besting the previous best set in 1997 by more than seven seconds.
The Lady Mocs finished second to Villanova in the event and ahead of teams from Tennessee, Seton Hall, Indiana, Connecticut and Pittsburg.
In the women’s 4x1500-meter relay, the Lady Mocs team of Uys, Wood, Taylor and Anderson, finished second to the Lady Vols who had world record holders on the team. UTK blew the field away with a time of 17:51.71. Chattanooga was second in the event with a time of 19:28.82 finishing ahead of the third-place team from Eastern Kentucky by more than 18 seconds.
Jordyn Radke ran the women’s 3000-meter open race in a time of 10:36.07 and Tara Gietema placed 10th in the women’s 5000-meter invitational in a time of 18:01.62.
In the men’s races, the Mocs placed seventh in both the 4x800 and 4x1500-meter relays.
“It wasn’t a good day for us in the men’s relays,” Gautier said. “Chris Berry had a particular bad time.”
In the 4x800 relay, the pass between Berry and Blake Ketron had some struggles as other teams were passing at the same time. In the 4x1500 relay, Berry was stepped on during his portion of the race and his shoe eventually came off and he finished without it.
The Running Mocs will take a couple of weeks off as they prepare for the Southern Conference championships to be hosted by Georgia Southern April 25-26 in Statesboro, Ga.
Western Carolina
Knoxville, Tenn. - Western Carolina's track & field teams bring home one victory and two third-place finishes in the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee this weekend.
The Catamounts got a boost from freshman javelin thrower Darron Dotson, who took home his first collegiate win in the men's javelin open throw event with a 60.80-meter throw. Dotson was less than one meter from qualifying for the NCAA regional on his throw.
In the men's 200-meter dash Dominique Young placed third with a time of 21.41 seconds falling just .20 seconds from a first-place finish.
In the men's 4x100-meter relay the Catamounts finished just out of a podium finish falling into fourth place with a time of 40.90. The team consisted of Manteo Mitchell, Benny Davis, Kevin Johnson, and Dominique Young.
The Catamounts took their final third-place finish in the men's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:11.45. The team consisted of Dominique Young, Manteo Mitchell, Thomas Funderburk, and Benny Davis.
Also sophomore Matt Evans placed second in the javelin throwing 64.87 meters.
Sophomore Felicia Paulding finished in fifth place in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.47 seconds.
Sophomore Janet Carothers finished in seventh place in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 56.05 seconds.
Senior Manteo Mitchell placed fifth in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 47.76 seconds.
Western Carolina returns home this weekend to host the annual Western Carolina Invitational held at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C. this Friday.
Wofford
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Wofford men’s and women’s track teams competed down the road over the weekend at the Furman Invitational hosted by Furman University at the Irwin Belk Track Complex. The Terriers posted new school records and personal best in multiple events during the meet.
The Terriers made their mark in the men’s javelin throw as the Terrier duo of Carter Blanche and Andy Vess finished 1-2 in the standings. Blanche set a new school record with a throw of 180-5, placing him first overall in the meet and 4th in the current Southern Conference rankings. Vess, who finished second in the meet, tallied a throw of 161-9.60, which ranks him 8th overall in the Southern Conference.
Elias Conits had another strong day for the Terriers as he took first place in the men’s 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. In the 100, Conits set a new personal record in the preliminaries with a time of 10.97 seconds to take the heat and followed it up with a time of 11.01 seconds in the finals to take first place. In the 200, Conits also took first place with a time of 22.93 seconds.
Brian Smith and Maverick Harris also set new school records in the men’s 400-meter dash and the 3000-meter steeplechase. Smith, with a time of 50.58 seconds, set a school record in the 400 while finishing tied for second. Harris set a new school record in the men’s 3000 steeplechase with a time of 10:38.31 finishing in the 5th spot.
On the women’s side, Catelyn Amende had the best finish for the Terriers as she posted a jump of 4-6 in the women’s high jump putting her in the 6th position.
Both track and field teams will be back in action Friday afternoon as they battle USC Upstate in the second annual Wofford vs. USC Upstate Dual Track Meet hosted by Broome High School at 4 p.m.
