Davidson 5, The Citadel 2
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Davidson men’s tennis team swept the doubles play for only the second time this year and continued their strong play into singles action on their way to scoring a 5-2 Southern Conference win over The Citadel on Saturday afternoon to get back on the winning track.
Davidson, which had dropped its past seven matches, improved to 6-14 overall and netted their second league win of the season (2-7). The Citadel fell to 8-11 and 1-6 in SoCon action.
For the fist time since opening the year, Davidson took all three doubles matches to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Leading the way was the duo of sophomore Walker Lyons and senior Scott Myers. The No. 2 team earned their third straight doubles win by the count of 8-4 over Michael Kociecki and Martin King.
Davidson also took scores of 8-2 and 8-6 at the No. 1 and 2 spots. The tandem of Calum Gee and Eric Noble along with the team of Carter Braxton and Brandon Byrd each halted their two-match skids in doubles play, while tallying their second wins each as a team.
Continuing their strong play from doubles into singles was Lyons, Myers and Gee to help the Wildcats seal the win. Lyons recorded his fifth win of the year at No. 2, and eighth overall, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Kociecki.
Myers and Gee picked up their 10th and ninth singles wins, respectively of the season at No. 3 and 4. Myers forced a third-set super tie breaker with a 6-3 second set win, then took home the tie breaker win, 10-5. Gee rolled in his match agianst King, 6-3, 6-0.
Rounding the Wildcats victory was sophomore Arie Hefter with a straight set 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Derek Dickey at No. 5.
Appalachian State 6, Chattanooga 1
BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men’s tennis capped off its final home match in style as the Mountaineers grabbed an impressive 6-1 win over SoCon foe Chattanooga Saturday afternoon at the Grandfather Mountain tennis courts. With the win, the Black and Gold improve to 13-9 on the season and 4-5 in league play, while the Mocs fall to 1-16 overall and 0-9 in Southern Conference play.
The Apps got off to a solid start as they notched wins in two of three doubles matches.
The duo of Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs continued with their impressive play, as they defeated Dakota Pate and Alexandru Butnarcuic at the number two spot, winning 8-5. Alain Humblet and Philip Kloc clinched the doubles point for ASU, handily winning 8-2 at the number three spot. Seniors Lee Floyd and Bobby Lake posted a strong effort, but came up just short at the number one doubles position, falling 8-7, 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
In singles action, Jacobs ran past his opponent, winning 7-6. 6-0 at the number three spot, while Constance gutted out a win at the number two spot, after falling behind in the first set, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.
At the number one spot, Lake won the first set, but could not withstand a strong rally by Peter Sauska, who was victorious in the next two sets, winning 6-4, 6-4 to hand the Black and Gold their lone loss in singles action.
Floyd was dominant at the number four flight, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win over his competitor, while Humblet defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-2 and Kloc won in two sets as well at the number five spot.
UNC Greensboro 4, Georgia Southern 3
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? UNC Greensboro picked up wins at the top three singles slots after winning two of three doubles matches as the Spartans got past Georgia Southern, 4-3, in Southern Conference men’s tennis action Saturday afternoon.
UNCG got singles wins from Orcun Seyrek, Andrey Bubnov and Arsel Kumdereli after the early 1-0 lead to wrap up UNCG’s 12th win of the season (12-6), including a 6-2 mark in league play. Seyrek’s win, a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Joris DeWeerdt, made him 22-3 on the year, including 17-1 this spring. The freshman from Istanbul, Turkey is a perfect 8-0 on the spring. Kumdereli earned his 16th win of the year, while Bubnov has 12 wins this year.
Texas-San Antonio 4, Samford 3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford men’s tennis team competed in its final home match of the 2009 season Saturday and suffered a hard-fought 4-3 defeat against the UTSA Roadrunners in a non-conference contest held at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the loss, Samford (6-13-1) concluded its home schedule with a 3-6-1 record.
UTSA (8-11) won Saturday’s doubles point and then picked up singles victories on courts No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5. The Roadrunners’ Jorge Delgado clinched the match with a 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4 win on court No. 5.
Samford’s doubles team comprised of senior Brian Dushock and junior Kelwin DeWet tallied a 9-7 victory over UTSA’s tandem of Rodrigo Morgado and Andre Moreira on court No. 1. The win proved to be the Bulldogs’ lone triumph in doubles play as the Roadrunners tallied victories on courts No. 2 and No. 3.
In singles play, Samford’s Carson Kadi extended his winning streak to nine-consecutive matches as he outlasted UTSA’s Pedro Zanotelli, 0-6, 7-6(3), 6-1, on court No. 3. Earlier in the singles, the Bulldogs’ Dushock cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 contest.
With Kadi’s win, Samford’s true freshman from New Orleans, La., improved his team-leading dual-match record to 16-4 this season.
The Bulldogs’ final singles victory of the evening occurred on court No. 6 as sophomore Carl Abalos earned a 6-4, 6-3 win against the Roadrunners’ Shariq Khan. The triumph improved Abalos’ record on the year to 8-11.
The Samford men’s tennis team will next be in action Friday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs travel to Greenville, S.C., for a SoCon duel versus the Furman Paladins.
