Davidson 6, Elon 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Playing their second-to-last match of the regular season, the Davidson women?s tennis picked up their sixth Southern Conference win of the year with a 6-1 triumph over Elon on Friday afternoon in the Knobloch indoor Tennis Center.
The Wildcats, who are playing their last five matches at home, improved to 11-10 overall and moved to 6-3 in SoCon play, fifth-best in the league. Elon fell to 10-11 overall and 4-5 in league action.
For the second match in a row, Davidson captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2. The duo of Michele Fanney and Virginia Berry tallied their second win in a row with an 8-6 win over Elon?s Anna Milian and Paige Kensrue.
Sealing the point was Romina Clemente and Alison Rauh with an 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot.
Davidson proceeded to take five of the six singles wins to secure the five-point victory. Fanney and Berry continued their winning ways in singles action with their third and eighth wins in a row, respectively. Fanney took home a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Milian, while Berry registered a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kensrue. Berry is now a team-best 16-5, one off her career-high in singles wins.
Ali Gores and Molly McDevitt each picked up their third straight wins, and 10th each on the season, with wins at No. 4 and 5. Gores was forced to a third-set super tie breaker after dropping a 6-4 second set decision to Lauren Sessoms. The junior then scored a 10-6 win in the tie breaker.
McDevitt won in impressive fashion, tallying a shutout (6-0, 6-0) win over Laura Graybill at No. 5.
Finishing the Wildcats’ outstanding afternoon was senior Lora Dushanova, who made her 2009 debut. Working her way back from an injury, Dushanova showed no effects from her long layoff, allowing Hayley Wahl to score just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. The win was Dushanova?s 42nd in her Wildcat career.
Chattanooga 5, Western Carolina 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lady Mocs downed Western Carolina in Southern Conference women’s tennis action 5-2 at the UTC Tennis Complex Saturday afternoon.
With dangerous weather approaching the Chattanooga area, the match began with singles play. UTC freshman Charlotte Bossy won her fifth match at the No. 4 spot defeating Layne Arnold 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Emily Hangstefer won her second straight match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ainhoa Iglesias at No. 3.
The Catamounts got to within one with a win at the top spot. Iza Glinska defeated the Lady Mocs’ freshman Shaina Singh 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Annie Green posted a 7-6(7), 6-0 win over the Catamounts’ Chelsea Best at the No. 5 spot and Brianna Wishing clinched the win for Chattanooga at the No. 6 position. Western Carolina’s Emily Turke won the first set 6-3, but Wishing, a freshman from Murfreesboro, Tenn., won the next two sets 6-3, 6-1 to claim the victory.
Doubles play started outdoors with Singh and Bossy claiming an 8-0 win at the No. 3 position over Best and Jennifer Brazelton. The next two matches were relocated to the UTC indoor courts as the weather began to turn.
Green and van der Veek would grab an 8-3 victory at the top spot over Glinska and Arnold for their second straight win. Chattanooga would complete the sweep with a win at the No. 2 position. Hangstefer and Kate Ksiezopolski defeated Massey and Iglesias 8-5.
The Lady Mocs improve to 6-12 overall and 2-6 in league play while the Catamounts fall to 4-14 overall and 0-9 in conference play. Chattanooga will host UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Complex at 1:00 p.m. Western Carolina will remain on the road with a matchup against league newcomer Samford Saturday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala., at 1:00 p.m.
East Tennessee State 7, Wofford 0
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Wofford women’s tennis ream was defeated by the home standing East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Friday afternoon in Johnson City, Tenn. by a 7-0 margin. This was the second straight non conference match for the Terriers.
ETSU (12-6, 8-1 ASUN) came out and took control of the match early by sweeping all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into the remaining singles matches. Sonia Anand and Betsy Hauer competed hard on court No. 3 but came up short losing to Tara Sheets and Vita Moskaliova 8-4.
Sabrina Smyers and Haley Baird were defeated on court No. 1 as were Cayley Wetzig and Kristin Demosthenes on court No. 2.
In singles play, the Terriers could not keep pace with the Atlantic Sun conference leading Buccaneers as they were defeated in all six singles matches. Hauer was the closest Terrier to win a match but was unable to do so as she was downed on court No. 5 by Sheets 6-1, 6-2. The remaining Terriers were also defeated in straight sets.
Wofford returns to the court on Wednesday April 15 as they travel to take on the Furman Paladins in Greenville, S.C. at 3 p.m.
