SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Furman pitcher Barry Benton has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from March 25-31, the league office announced Wednesday.

 

The junior carries a 3.9 GPA in biology. Benton, who pitched 10.2 innings last week, was 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA with victories over Charleston Southern and SoCon foe College of Charleston. The Jacksonville, Ala., native pitched seven innings against the Buccaneers without giving up a run in the Paladins 8-1 victory. Benton came on in relief and pitched 3.2 innings to help lead Furman to the 10-9 victory against the Cougars.

 

Also nominated for this week’s award were Appalachian State baseball player David Towarnicky, Western Carolina track and field performer Matt Evans, Davidson women’s tennis player Michele Fanney and Elon’s Hayley Wahl.
