CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? Second-seeded Samford built a 16-point second half advantage before holding on in the closing minutes to down No. 7 UNC Greensboro, 58-49, in the first quarterfinal match-up on Friday at the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championship at the McKenzie  Arena.

The Bulldogs (22-6) will face the winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal match-up between No. 3 Western Carolina and No. 11 Elon in the second semifinal on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. ET live on SportSouth.

Chika Okoli led three Bulldogs in double figures with 15 points and seven rebounds, with Savannah Hill and Emily London each tallying 12 points apiece. Megan Wilderotter accounted for five of Samford’s 11 steals on the morning.

Lakiah Hyson paced UNC Greensboro with 13 points and a team-high tying seven rebounds, with Gini Grimsley adding 11 in the loss.

Samford used a methodical, 16-to-4 run midway through the second half to distance itself from the Spartans after UNCG had closed to within four, 38-34 at the 13:27 mark. London scored eight of the points during the spurt, including a pair of 3-pointers.

UNC Greensboro responded by outscoring the Bulldogs, 11-to-2, including three-consecutive treys from Hyson, Grimsley and Kendra Smith, before trimming the deficit to seven on a jumper by Monique Floyd with 1:38 to play. However, the Spartans would not score the remainder of the contest with Samford’s London converting two free throws for added insurance.

All told, Samford outscored UNCG 28-to-12 on points in the paint.

UNC Greensboro erased a seven-point first half deficit with a 13-to-2 spurt to claim a four-point advantage. However, the Bulldogs outscored the Spartans, 12-to-4, to close the opening half to lead by four at the break, 27-23.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? Chattanooga’s Tagan Hatchett nailed six three-pointers and Southern Conference Player of the Year Shanara Hollinquest tallied 19 points as the No. 1 seed Lady Mocs downed No. 8 seed Appalachian State, 86-53, in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championship.

The Lady Mocs (22-8) move on to face the winner of the College of Charleston-Davidson game Sunday at 12 p.m. ET. The Mountaineers end their season at 9-22.

Guard Jenaya Wade-Fray was the third Lady Moc in double figures with 15 points, while guard LaCondra Mason turned in an all-around productive performance with nine points, eight rebounds and six assists, with only one turnover.

Leading the way for the Mountaineers was senior Brittany Mixon who had 15 points, while guard Sam Ramirez, the hero of yesterday’s game against Furman, tallied 11 points and three assists.

The Mountaineers, who trailed by 14 at the half in Thursday’s game against Furman before rallying for a 63-60 win, trailed by 15 to the Lady Mocs going into the break, 41-26. There would be no comeback for ASU in this game as UTC stretched the lead to 20 just 2:45 into the second half. The lead ballooned to 25 before most of the Chattanooga starters came out of the contest.

The Lady Mocs jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead to start the game, before ASU rallied to tie it at 12. From there the Lady Mocs took control behind Hatchett’s four first-half threes. The Mountaineers cut it to four at 23-19 before a Hatchett three began an 18-7 UTC run that ended the first half.
