SoCon Women?s Basketball Tournament Begins Thursday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? The 2009 Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championship begins Thursday afternoon at the McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. The annual event kicks off with three first round games, beginning at 3 p.m. ET.

 

Eighth-seeded Appalachian State (8-21, 7-13) will face No. 9 seed Furman (12-17, 6-14) at 3 p.m. ET in the day’s first contest. The winner of that contest will face top-seeded Chattanooga (21-8, 17-3) at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Friday morning.

 

Following the ASU-Furman contest, No. 7 seed UNC Greensboro (12-17, 9-11) will take on No. 10 seed Wofford (5-23, 3-17) with the winner advancing to battle No. 2 seed Samford (21-6, 16-4) at 9 a.m. Friday.

 

Thursday’s final opening-round game will pit sixth-seeded Georgia Southern (16-13, 11-9) against 11th-seeded Elon (4-25), beginning 30 minutes after the conclusion of the previous contest. No. 3 seed Western Carolina (18-11, 14-6) awaits the winner of this matchup with tip off set for approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7.

 

No. 4 seed College of Charleston (21-7, 14-6) and No. 5 seed Davidson (12-17, 11-9) will square off in a quarterfinal matchup Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

 

The semifinals and championship game will be televised live by SportSouth with the semis set for 12 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 8 and the championship at 3 p.m. ET on Monday, March 9. The tournament winner earns the league’s automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship.

 

All first round and quarterfinal games will be video-streamed at www.SoCon.tv, and the entire tournament will be broadcast locally on 1370-AM in Chattanooga.
