Women's Golf Teams Complete Day One of Tournaments

Samford ? Larry Nelson Invitational

 

BRASELTON, Ga. --- Junior Sara Hunt fired a team-best score of 149 (75-74) on Monday to lead the Samford women’s golf team to a second-place performance in the opening two rounds of competition at the 2009 Larry Nelson Invitational being held at the Chateau Elan Golf Course.

 

Samford, which carded a total team score of 623 (314-309) on Monday, only trails first-place Gardner-Webb by two strokes heading into Tuesday’s final round. Gardner-Webb currently leads the nine-team field with a 36-hole score of 621 (317-304).

 

Hunt, the Bulldogs’ highly-talented native of Columbia, Tenn., concluded Monday’s competition in second place after shooting her team-best score of 149. She only trails Belmont Abbey’s Carley Warrington by three strokes.

 

Warrington fired a second-round total of 71 to finish the day with a 36-hole score of 146.

 

The teams are scheduled to play the final 18 holes of the second-annual Larry Nelson Invitational on Tuesday.

 

Following Hunt’s opening-day score of 149, Samford’s Heather Arnold, Katelyn Stanier and Sarah Butts all chipped in with identical tallies of 158. All three Bulldogs concluded the first two rounds of competition tied for 11th place in the individual standings.

 

Senior Maria Troche added a 36-hole score of 173 (82-91), while Kellie O’Connell competed as an individual and turned in a two-round total of 171 (92-79).

 

The Samford women’s golf team will resume play in the 2009 Larry Nelson Invitational on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs complete their third-and-final round of competition at the Chateau Elan Golf Course (6,000-yard, par 72) in Braselton, Ga.

 

 

Chattanooga ? John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate

 

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. --- After 36 holes, Chattanooga’s women’s golf team is in fourth place at 595 shooting rounds of 300 and 295 at Eagles Landing Country Club. Georgia State leads the event at 588 followed by East Tennessee State and Furman which are tied for second at 590.

 

The Lady Mocs were tied for third after 18 holes starting with a 12-over par 300 just three shots off the pace set by East Tennessee State and host Georgia State at 297. UTC was tied with SoCon rival Furman in third with Campbell and Miami (Fla.) five shots back tied for fifth at 305.

 

Freshman Moa Duf shot her second best round with an even-par 72 to stand tied for second two shots behind Georgia State’s Anna Scott at 70 (-2). Duf was tied with ETSU’s Laura Jansome and Campbell’s Sandra Angulo.

 

Just one shot back at 73 in a tie for fifth was Lady Mocs sophomore Christine Wolf. Fellow sophomore Emma de Groot carded 14 pars en route to a 77 (+5). Those 14 pars tied Duf and Georgia State’s Claire Starkie for the most pars in the first round.

 

Chattanooga improved its score by five strokes with a second round score of 295. Duf once again led the way with a 73 (+1) which was matched by de Groot and Maria Salinas. Wolf shot 76 (-4) and Maria Juliana Loza carded a 79.

 

Duf is tied for fourth overall at one-over par 145. Wolf is tied for 10th at 149 (+5) as de Groot is just a shot back tied for 14th at 150 (+6). Salinas’s 73 moved her into a tie for 21st at 151 (+7), while Loza ends her day tied for 57th at 163 (+19).

 

Two Lady Mocs are playing as individuals in Kayla Stewart and Katie Taylor. Stewart shot rounds of 78 and 79 to tie for 46th at 157 (+13). Taylor’s 85 and 86 has her in 67th at 171.

 

Furman’s Stefanie Kenoyer has the overnight individual lead at two-under par 142. Scott and teammate Sandra Maier are tied for second at even-par 144.

 

Chattanooga’s final round pairing is with Campbell and Jacksonville State.

 

 

Furman ? John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate

 

Stockbridge, Ga. -- Furman’s Stefanie Kenoyer (73-69=142) fired a second round three-under par 69 to grab a two-stroke lead after two rounds at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate at the 6,074-yard, par-72 Eagle’s Landing Country Club on Monday.

 

With the low round of the tournament, Kenoyer helped Furman (300-290=590) to a two-over 290 in round two as the Paladins took a share of second place and moved within two strokes of the lead entering Tuesday’s final round. The Paladins, tied with East Tennessee State (297-293=590), trail host Georgia State (297-291=588) for the lead. Chattanooga and Campbell rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

 

Kenoyer holds a two-stroke lead over the Panthers’ Anna Scott (70-74=144) and Sandra Maier (74-70=144). Furman’s Blair Lamb (73-72=145) and Chattanooga’s Moa Duff (72-73=145) are tied for fourth place at one-over par. Sophomore Jackie Hilea (76-70=146) carded a two-under 70 on Monday afternoon to move into a tie for sixth place with 18 holes to play.

 

The tournament’s final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

 

 

Elon ? John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate

 

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. ? Tara McFadden turned in a team-leading, two-round score of 152 ? including a squad-best, three-over-par 75 in the second round ? as Elon landed in 10th place after the first day of the 16th Annual John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate women’s golf tournament Monday afternoon on the 6,074-yard Eagle’s Landing Country Club course.

 

McFadden (Tied-26th place/77-75?152), Frederique Bruell (Tied-31st place/77-76?153), reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week Danielle Mills (Tied-37th place/76-78?154), Lauren Lebak (Tied-57th place/82-81?163) and Dani Mullin (Tied-59th place/81-84?165) are all representing the Phoenix in the two-day, three-round event. Furman’s Stefanie Kenoyer (73-69?142) leads the 68-player field.

 

Host Georgia State (297-291?588) tops the 13-team event after the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament. East Tennessee State (297-293?590) and Furman (300-290?590) share second place, followed by Chattanooga (300-295?595) and Campbell (305-299?604) to close out the top five squads on the leader board.

 

Jacksonville State (309-299?608) sits in sixth place, followed by Augusta State (307-304?611), UNC Greensboro (306-306?612), Miami (305-308?613), Elon (311-310?621), Western Carolina (315-313?628), Maryland (319-311?630) and James Madison (314-319?633). The final round begins Tuesday morning.

 

 

The Citadel ? J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Invitational

 

Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel Golf team completed day one of the J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Invitational in 12th place with 363 on Monday, March 30 at the Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation in Charlotte, N.C.

 

Freshman Bree Baumgartner led the Bulldogs after firing an 87, tying for 33rd place overall. Sophomore golfer Christine Clark followed with an 88 to tie for 36th place, while freshman Alanna-Jean Keith, senior Kasey Owens and sophomore Sheri Rockefeller rounded out the Bulldogs with a 92, 96 and 98, respectively.

 

Pfeiffer has three golfers in the top eight as the Falcons have a six-shot lead on the field after day one. Shooting a 322, Pfeiffer is six strokes ahead of second place Newberry College (328). Host Wingate is a very close third with a first-day 329. Newberry’s freshman Maria Luz Besio tops the individual leader board, as she shot a two-over-par 74, while Catawba College junior Kelsey Babos is one shot back with a first round of 75.
