SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Georgia Southern third baseman Robin Siliga has been named the Southern Conference’s Softball Player of the Week while Samford pitcher Stephanie Royall has been named Pitcher of the Week for all games from March 23-29, the league office announced Monday. The weekly awards are voted on by the conference’s softball sports information directors.
Siliga went 4-for-5 and hit a three-run home run to help lead the Eagles to a doubleheader split with Georgia Tech last Tuesday. The victory over the Yellow Jackets snapped a non-conference home winning streak for GT that stretched back to 2007. In game two with the Eagles clinging to a tight 3-2 lead, Siliga clubbed a three-run home run to put the margin at 6-2. GSU would go on to win the game, 6-5.
Royall, who earned her second-consecutive SoCon Pitcher of the Week Award, pitched 15 innings against Furman while allowing only two earned runs in going 1-1 against the Paladins. The junior stuck out 10 batters, while walking just one. Royall picked up the win in game one of the series as the Bulldogs won, 3-2. In games two and three, despite the Bulldogs suffering defeats, Royall gave up no earned runs in 10.2 innings of work.
Also nominated for this week’s Player of the Week Award were Chattanooga’s Michelle Fuzzard, Western Carolina’s Lauren Ross, College of Charleston’s Katie Forbes, Appalachian State’s Michelle Lighton, UNC Greensboro’s Kaitlin Merkt, Samford’s Kristy Lawrence, Furman’s Morgan Hughey and Elon’s Jackie Gonzalez.
Also nominated for this week’s Pitcher of the Week Award were Furman’s Stephanie Mihaly, UNC Greensboro’s Hannah Angel, Georgia Southern’s Megen Smith and Appalachian State’s Ashley Stubbs.
