Georgia Southern ? Georgia Southern Invitational

 

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern track & field team was stellar in the rain-shortened GSU Invitational Saturday.

 

The Eagles won three events including the 1500-meter run, 100-meter dash and long jump.

 

Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) narrowly missed tying the school record in the 1500-meter run. Fuller brought home the Eagles' first event win in the race with a time of 4:45.90. Fuller finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.56.

 

Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) gave the Eagles their second event win of the day in the 100-meter dash. She finished with a time of 11.81. Anthony came in fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.42 meters.

 

Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) got the Eagles off on the right foot with a third-place finish in the steeplechase. Lee was in second most of the race and finished with a time of 12:41.47.

 

Amanda Spivy (Pembroke, Ga.) picked up a point for Georgia Southern with a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw. Spivy completed the event with a mark of 30.86 meters.

 

Georgia Southern earned another top-three finish with a third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. The Eagles finished third with a time of 48.27.

 

Ashley Bush-Hardy (Fayetteville, Ga.) earned Georgia Southern's fourth medal with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash. Bush-Hardy finished with a time of 57.53.

 

Melanie Trumbo (Lilburn, Ga.) finished second in the javelin throw with a time mark of 32.47 meters.

 

Lynndsey Hyter (Dallas, Texas) and Kristin Olson (Senoia, Ga.) finished back-to-back in the 100-meter hurdles. Hyter finished fifth with a time of 14.86. Olson finished sixth with a time of 14.94. Hyter also won the long jump with a mark of 5.65 meters.

 

Shaunta Hamilton (Macon, Ga.) finished third in the long jump with a mark of 5.45 meters.

 

Morgan Jefferson (Villa Rica, Ga.) led Georgia Southern in the 800-meter run and finished second with a time of 2:20.93.

 

Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga.) finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.00.

 

Courtney Ware (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.23.

 

Michelle Uzoh (San Antonio, Texas) finished second in the shot put with a mark of 10.44 meters. 

 

Track & field returns to action Thursday at the Florida Relays.

 

 

The Citadel ? Georgia Southern Invitational

 

Statesboro, Ga. ? Lauren Fleming and Brian Baize took first in the pole vault, Alex Anderson won the 10k and Zach Johnson won the 1500-meter run as The Citadel competed in the Georgia Southern Invitational on Saturday, March 28 in Statesboro, Ga.

 

Fleming posted a mark of 8-11? while Baize tied his personal-best with a jump of 14-2?. He also placed seventh in the javelin with a personal-best record of 146-1. Anderson ran a personal-best time of 34:19.70 in the 10k and Johnson ran the 1500 for a time of 4:04.51.

 

Brillyance Gilchrist-Poteat broke her freshman record in the 100-meter high hurdles that she recorded last week at the Shamrock Invitational on March 21. She ran a time of 57.91 for 13th place. Gilchrist-Poteat finished 13th again in the 400-meter dash with a time of 60.72 earning the fourth all-time record.

 

Nathan Jackson placed second in the 10k with a time of 36:13.18 and Emily Green moved to the third all-time spot for her second-place throw of 129-9 in the hammer. She also finished fifth in the javelin with a mark of 95-4. Christopher Castagno recorded a personal-best mark of 144-0 in the hammer to take second place.

 

Chris Fallis ran the 1500 with a time of 4:09.74 for third place and Jodi Whittle improved her No. 2 all-time spot for her personal-best time of 57.91 in the 400-meter dash for fourth place. Corey Robinson threw 152-2 for fifth place in the javelin and Megan Jenkins also placed fifth in the 1500.

 

For sixth place in both events, Matt Earls had a personal-best throw 131-1 in the hammer and a mark of 146-9.

 

Jamel Brown also finished sixth in the 400 dash with a personal-best time of 49.33 and freshman Theresa Johansen placed sixth in the hammer with a throw of 108-9.

 

Brendan Kight, Austin Ditzhazy and Suzanne Gay took eighth in their events. Kight ran a time of 4:16.26 in the 1500 and Ditzhazy threw a mark of 133-3 in the javelin. Gay posted a time of 5:24.60 in the 1500 run.

 

Coming up next, the Bulldogs will travel to Durham, N.C. to compete in the Duke Invitational on April 3-4.

 

 

Western Carolina ? Asics Winthrop Invitational

 

Rock Hill, S.C. - Western Carolina's track & field teams participating in their second outdoor invitational bringing home three victories and seven top three finishes, including one second place finish, in the Asics Winthrop Invitational this weekend.

 

The Catamounts got a boost form freshman sprinter Benny Davis, who took home his first outdoor first-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.31 seconds.

 

Also coming up with a victory in the invitational was Western Carolina's men 4x100-meter relay team with a time of 41.04 seconds. The team consisted of junior Dominique Young, senior Manteo Mitchell, freshman Benny Davis, and junior Christian Bethune.

 

The final victory for Western Carolina came from junior Matt Evans who took first in the Decathlon event leading the field with 6,462 points. Evans used four first-place finishes in the Decathlon to win the event. Fellow teammate sophomore Sean Readon placed third in the Decathlon.

 

Western Carolina had many other contributors to their success in the meet coming from both the men and women's teams.

 

Junior Dominique Young placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.88 falling a mere .01 seconds behind second place in the event. Fellow teammate, senior Kevin Johnson finished right behind Young in fourth place with a time of 11.04.

 

Also on the men's side, senior Manteo Mitchell took a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.86.

 

Sophomore distance runner Drew Tucker had a solid showing in the 800-meter event placing third with a time of 1:53.83 seconds.

 

In the women's 1500-meter run, the Catamounts took second and third in the event thanks to senior Megan Isaacs placing second with a time of 4:45.11 and teammate sophomore Jordan Gaddy in third place just a mere .40 seconds from Isaacs.

 

The women's 4x100-meter relay team finished in second place falling just behind Charlotte by .20 seconds. The team consisted of sophomores Felicia Paulding, Janet Carothers, freshman Emma Bowers, and junior Sherelle Fronberger.

 

In the men's long jump event, junior Alex Dollard placed fourth jumping 7.03 meters. Fellow junior Jestin Jennings placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles event with a time of 55.66 seconds. In the women's 400-meter hurdles, junior Tierra Johnson took home a third-place finish with a time of 1:05.05.

 

Western Carolina also performed well in the Hammer Throw event as sophomore Chelsea Mclean threw 41.86 meters to finish fourth. On the men's side, junior Cale McDaniel also finished fourth with a 50.15-meter throw.

 

Western Carolina returns home this weekend to host the first annual Mountains versus Beach event being held at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The event will put Western Carolina and rival Appalachian State working together to take on ECU & UNC-Wilmington beginning on Saturday April 4.

 

 

Wofford ? Asics Winthrop Invitational

 

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Wofford men’s and women’s track teams completed its second meet of the outdoor season over the weekend as they competed in the Winthrop Asics Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track Complex in Rock Hill, S.C.

 

For the Terriers, Brian Smith ran a 51.32 400-meter dash to finish 15th in the preleminaries out of 44 runners. However, Smith just missed out on qualifying for the 400 finals.  In the men’s 200-meter dash prelims Elias Contis finished with a time of 23.31 to place in the 24th position out of 38 runners.

 

Josh Shumaker paced the Terriers in the men’s 5000-meter run as he finished with a time of 16:37.48 which was good enough for a 12th-place finish out of 34 competitors.  Also in the men’s 5000 run, Bryan Brooks placed 16th with a time of 16:49.98.

 

Andy Vess led the Terriers in the men’s javelin throw as his throw of 41.94 meters placed him 14th out of 31 competitors in the event.

 

On the women’s side, Caroline Burdette led the Terriers in the women’s 1500-meter run with a time of 5:11.14 putting her in the 17th position. Peace Tapp finished 7th overall in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13:20.29.

 

In the women’s 5000 run Justina Oliva pace the Terriers with a 19th-place finish with a time of 20:35.33.

 

Both track and field teams will be back in action of April 4 as they travel to Durham, N.C. to take part in the Duke Invitational.

 

 

Furman ? LSU Tiger Relays

 

BATON ROUGE, La. ? Furman senior Patrick Morgan took first place in the 5000-meter run at the LSU Tiger Relays at Bernie Moore Stadium as the Paladin track and field teams competed in their second outdoor meet of the season. Morgan won the race with a personal-best time of 15:18.19, crossing the finish line more than 12 seconds before the next competitor.

 

Morgan was one of four Paladins to finish in the top 10 in the 5000 run. Senior Alex Plasencia took third place with a time of 15:38.39. Classmate Joe Tenini finished ninth, running the race in 15:55.31. Sophomore Charlie McGoogan ended the run in 10th place with his time of 15:57.99.

 

Also on the men’s side, senior Jeff O’Connell raced to a third-place showing in the 3000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 9:46.34. Freshman Matt Clay competed in the event as well, turning in a mark of 9:58.12 in his sixth-place finish.

 

The Lady Paladin 4x800-meter relay team, comprised of Monique Ositelu, Nodia Robinson, Lindsey Barker and Charlee Coggins, took second place in the event. The group posted a time of 9:19.42. Freshman Chloe Kowalski ran a personal-best 18:23.10 in the 5000 run, finishing in fifth-place overall. Two Lady Paladins finished among the top 10 in the 1500-meter run. Sophomore Jenna Callahan took seventh with a time of 5:00.82 and freshman Rebecca Shelton crossed the finish line ninth with a personal-best 5:05.28.

 

The Furman track & field teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 11 when they host the annual Furman Invitational at the Belk Complex for Track & Field.

 

 

Samford ? Alabama Relays

 

Day 1

 

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ---- The Samford University track and field team had a great day in the third day of events at the Alabama Relays on Saturday. The meet’s events really got underway Saturday after the two-day running of the heptathlon and decathlon concluded on Friday.

 

“We’ve had a great first three days here at the Alabama Relays,” Samford head coach Rod Tiffin said. “Not many really outstanding performances but overall, it’s been a very good meet so far. I think we had to get the cobwebs off from Spring Break, but once we got into it, we were doing well. Our multi-event freshmen have really done very well in their first heptathlons and decathlons here.”

 

On Thursday and Friday, freshman Christian McGuire and redshirt sophomore Elyse Rippe competed in the heptathlon while junior Chas Keithan and freshman Donald Cooper participated in the decathlon.

 

McGuire and Rippe took ninth and 11th places, respectively in the heptathlon with 4022 and 3317 points. In the event, McGuire placed fifth in the javelin, eighth in the 200 meters and 800 meters, 10th in the 100-meter hurdles, and 11th in the high jump, long jump and shot put. Rippe won the 800-meters, placed 12th in the javelin and long jump, and 13th in the 200 meters, high jump and shot put.

 

Cooper and Keithan placed 10th and 14th, respectively, in the decathlon. Cooper took second in the 400-meters, third in the 100-meters, fifth in the high jump, sixth in the discus, seventh in the 110-meter hurdles, ninth in the pole vault and 1500 meters, 17th in the long jump and javelin and 18th in the shot put. Keithan won the 1500-meters, placed third in the javelin, sixth in the pole vault, 15th in the 400-meter dash and discus, 16th in the 110-meter hurdles and long jump, 18th in the high jump, 19th in the shot put and 21st in the 100-meter dash.

 

“Hillary Neal had another great performance today in the 1500,” Tiffin said. “She was two seconds off of regional qualifying today as she was last week in the 800. So, we hope those qualifying marks will be coming very soon.”

 

Neal won the 1500 run with a time of 4:30.61 while Andrea Seccafien took fourth in the 5000 with a time of 18:12.39 and Katie Almand placed 17th (19:58.33). Deanna Zidar ran a personal best of 11:24.31 in the women’s 3000 steeplechase.

 

In the women’s 400, Ashley Dance finished ninth with a time of 57.81 while Ashley Flowers took 13th place with a time of 58.50. Jessica Van Ausdall and Cori Christensen took eighth and tenth places, respectively, with times of 2:17.34 and 2:17.60.

 

In the women’s field events, Christy Myers had a personal best (5’1.00”) in the high jump, taking 15th place.

 

Blaise Carie placed eighth in the 1500 with a time of 4:04.45 while Matt Bryson and Dan Hall took 23rd and 29th in the same event. Patrick Ollinger took third in the 10,000-meters with a time of 33:17.54 and Jay Masery placed seventh with a time of 35:33.64.

 

Cavan Corcoran ran the 110 hurdles in 15.02 to take seventh place in the event. He also finished 16th in the 400 hurdles (57.35) while Cole placed 22nd with a time of 59.99.

 

In the men’s field events, Thomas Oliver placed sixth in the javelin with a toss of 183’10.70”.

 

“We hope to set a few school records tomorrow on the women’s side in the 4x400 and distance medley relays and even win some of those,” Tiffin said. “I expect the men to do well in the relays as well. We are on track to do some good things there.”

 

Samford will finish out competition in the Alabama Relays on Sunday. The first events begin an 8 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw and women’s pole vault followed by the much-anticipated relay events.

 

Day 2

 

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ---- The Samford University track and field team wrapped up competition in the Alabama Relays Sunday with some major highlights including several personal bests and a school record.

 

“We had a good day today to wrap up the Alabama Relays,” Samford head coach Rod Tiffin said. “We had a couple of personal bests from Chris Davis and Ryan Fee in the throws and our women’s sprint medley relay team obliterated the school record by four seconds. It was a great meet coming off of Spring Break, a short week. We have a full week of practice this week so I look forward to us putting it all together and getting ready for Austin Peay next week.”

 

The Samford women finished third in the sprint medley relay with a school record or 4:03.63 while they finished seventh in the 4x1500-meter relay with a time of 21:03.70.

 

The men were the major players, though, on Sunday as most of the events featured Samford men. The men’s distance medley team took eighth place with a time of 10:40.77.

 

Chris Davis threw personal bests in the shot put (46-07) and the hammer throw (121-02.30) while Ryan Fee had a personal best in the discus (131-04.80). Fee also took 14th place in the hammer throw with a toss of 121-04.30. Kyle Kirby had a personal best in the hammer with a distance of 130-04.20.

 

Patrick Wells won the men’s pole vault invitational with a personal best of 16-2.90 while Zac Epperson placed sixth with a personal best of 14-09.20. Wells has now won five of his last six pole vault competitions this year.

 

The Samford track and field team will be back in action this Saturday, April 4, as it travels to Clarksville, Tenn., to compete in the Austin Peay Invitational.

 

 

Elon - Raleigh Relays

 

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Elon track team competed in heavy rain during the second day of the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.  Despite the weather, the team was able to get many of its competitions in.
 
Freshman Madison Russo was the top Elon finisher in the women's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:54.63.  The time was good enough for a 26th-place finish out of 100 runners.  Fellow newcomers Courtney Whalen and Justine Schulerud finished the race with times of 4:57.74 and 5:09.08, respectively.
 
Elon's 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of Sarah Skogen, Dana Caltado, Veronica Day and Amy Salek crossed the finish line in 48.76, beating Duke's team by just over one-half of a second.  That same team continued on in the 4x200-meter relay, nipping Iowa State at the line for a 1:43.24 finish.
 
Iowa State answered later in the women's 4x400-meter relay, passing Elon's team of Melissa Turowski, Andrea March, Jennine Strange and Salek.  Elon came in with a time of 3:55.47, beating teams from Georgetown and East Carolina.
 
The Elon tracksters will return to action at Liberty and Duke this coming weekend, April 3-4.

 

 

College of Charleston ? Raleigh Relays

 

RALEIGH, N.C. ? The College of Charleston track & field team took part in the Raleigh Relays this weekend on the campus of N.C. State.

Top finishers in the competition were Emily Smith, who posted a 1.70-meter effort in the high jump to finish fourth, while Kristen Wolfe finished ninth in the 1500-meter run in a time of 4:49.78. Jessica Cumbee earned a 10th-place finish in the pole vault with a personal best 3.25-meter effort and Cara Browning posted a time of 19:56.97 in the 5000-meter run to place 12th. Rounding out the top individual finishers on the day was Isabel Boersma, who ran the 100-meter hurdles in 15.84.

Also, Mary Zolga broke a school-record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.94, while in the 4x1500-meter relay, the team of Wolfe, Emily Nagle, Callen Powers and Grace Loba set a school record with a time of 20:04.07.

In the 4x400 relay, the team of Laura Call, Ariel Hatcher, Alyssa D'Orazio and Zolga placed ninth in a time of 3:55.02, while in the 1600-meter sprint medley, the Cougars posted a school-record time of 4:15.93.

On the men’s side, David Lamberson placed 10th in section IV of the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:24.10, while Trevor Sprague finished 15th in the section III of the event with a time of 15:32.69. Christian Bailey also had a strong finish in the 10,000-meters placing 18th in a time of 31:53.48.

The Cougars return to action on April 3rd when they take part in the Duke Invitational.

 

 

UNC Greensboro ? Raleigh Relays

 

Day 1

 

RALEIGH, NC ? UNC Greensboro’s men and women’s 4x1500-meter relay teams were the top performers for the Spartans on day one of the Raleigh Relays on Friday afternoon.

 

The women’s 4x1500 team ran the relay in 19:58.85 to break the previous school record by almost a minute and a half.

 

The men’s relay team combined to turn in a time of 16:52.30, which is good enough for the second-fastest time in school history.

 

Another top performer during the first day of competition was Latrese Bristol. Her time of 1:07.47 in the 400-meters was the fourth fastest time in school history.

 

The Spartans will return to competition tomorrow for the second and final day of the Raleigh Relays. Action will get underway at 10 a.m. on the campus of NC State.

 

Day 2

 

RALEIGH, NC ? UNC Greensboro’s relay teams once again shined for the Spartans, as they both broke school records during the second day of the Raleigh Relays on Saturday.

 

The women’s 4x800-meter team ran a time of 9:39.38, which was just over 45 seconds faster than the previous school record that was set in 1999.

 

The men’s 4x800 team broke the previous school record by 21 seconds after completing the event in a time of 7:39.29.

 

Laura Bocko’s time of 12:15.09 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase was the second fastest time in school history.

 

The Spartans will return to competition next weekend as they make the short trip to Durham, NC for the Duke Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

 

 

Appalachian State Men ? Weems Baskins Invitational

 

COLUMBIA, S.C.- Appalachian State University men's track and field had yet another solid showing over the weekend at the Weems Baskins Invitational as the Mountaineers had impressive showings in numerous events.

 

In the 100-meter dash, freshman DeSean Pearce came in fifth with a time of 11.05, while John Svoboda and Carlos Carter notched eighth and ninth-place finishes.

 

Sophomore Phillip Bush led the Apps in the 200-meter dash, placing fifth with a time of 22.31, and Svoboda and Pearce earned sixth and tenth-place finishes.

 

In the 800-meter run, Nick O'Keefe grabbed a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:57.42 and Brooks Forsyth finished tied for seventh.

 

Daniel Neal came in fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing the race in 14.72, while Matt Boruff placed ninth and Bush came in 11th.

 

Freshman AJ Dohanic earned a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.04 and Neal came in ninth.

 

Mason Campbell was impressive in the 3000-meter steeplechase, capturing first place with a time of 10:03.68 and teammate Mason Campbell placed fourth.

 

Bush paced the Apps in the long jump, leaping a team-best 21-4.75, while Mike Wilson and Mike Pope notched seventh and ninth-place finishes.

 

Capping off the meet, Jerod Gardner came in seventh in the discus and eighth in the javelin throw and Tim Daly finished fourth in the hammer, with Malcolm Styers coming in sixth and freshman Matt Pfingst placing sixth in the javelin.

 

The Mountaineers return to action Saturday April 4, as the Apps head to Cullowhee, N.C. to compete at the Beach vs. Mountains meet.

 

 

Appalachian State Women ? Weems Baskins Invitational

 

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Appalachian State University women's track and field had yet another solid weekend of outdoor compeition, as numerous Mountaineers posted impressive performances at South Carolina's Weems Baskins Invitational.

 

In the 100-meter dash, freshman Christina Parker finished 12th overall while Danielle Thorpe came in 13th with times of 12.80 and 12.85. Both were solid in the 200-meter dash as well, finishing third and fifth, while Asia Dunlap and Lynda Hiller earned the sixth and seventh-place spots.

 

Dunlap and Hiller paced the Black and Gold in the 400-meter dash as well, finishing third and fourth with times of 57.10 and 58.70.

 

Dani Reese grabbed a tenth-place finish in the 800-meter run, runnning the race in 2:27.80, while teammates Stephanie Chapman and Melissa Kopec placed 11th and 12th respectively. Chapman also came in ninth in the 1500-meter run, and Reese and Kopec took home 11th and 13th-place finishes.

 

Sophomore Natalie Shaw earned the runner up spot in the 5000-meter run with a time of 19:17.89 and freshman Kelsey Hanger was right behind Shaw taking the third-place spot.

 

In the 100-meter hurdles, Michelle Brutus notched an eighth-place finish, while also coming in fourth in the 400-meter hurdles. Naadia Crutchfield and Meg Irwin took the sixth and ninth-place spots in the 400-meter hurdles.

 

Rounding out the competition, Whitney Smyre came in fifth in the discus with a throw of 124-8?, while Lily Tallent grabbed the eighth-place spot. Senior Carla Durham had an impressive outing in the hammer throw, finishing fifth with a throw of 153-10, good enough to put her at eighth on ASU's all-time list in the event.

 

The Mountaineers return to action Saturday April 4, as the Apps head to Cullowhee, N.C. to compete in the Beach vs. Mountains meet.
