Davidson 4, Chattanooga 3

 

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women’s tennis team fell 4-3 to Southern Conference foe Davidson Saturday afternoon at the Hixson Racquet Club.

 

The doubles point came down to the wire with the Wildcats gaining the advantage with a win at the No. 3 position. Chattanooga won the first doubles match with Emily Hangstefer and Grace Robinette teaming up at the No. 2 position and defeating Alison Rauh and Romina Clemente 8-4. Davidson split the point with Michele Fanney and Virginia Berry claiming an 8-3 win over UTC’s Jennemieke van der Veek and Charlotte Bossy 8-3 at the top position.

 

At the No. 3 spot, Annie Green and Shaina Singh fell 9-7 after leading throughout to the Wildcats’ Ali Gores and Molly McDevitt to give Davidson a 1-0 lead.

 

The two teams split the singles matches. Emily Hangstefer got the first point for the Lady Mocs with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3. The Wildcats would win the next three matches to clinch the win with Chattanooga winning the final two for the final 4-3 score.

 

Annie Green won 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 at No. 5 followed by Charlotte Bossy’s victory over Ali Gores 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 4.

 

 

UNC Greensboro 7, Western Carolina 0

 

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? UNC Greensboro’s Alejandra Guerra won her ninth straight singles match and ran her career mark to 14-0 against Southern Conference foes as the Spartans shut out Western Carolina, 7-0, in women’s tennis action Sunday afternoon at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

 

The Spartans swept all six singles matches with relative ease. UNCG (8-4, 3-1) only lost 13 total games in singles play, seven of them coming at No. 2 singles where Arielle VonStrolley was challenged by Amanda Massey, but disposed of her 6-3 and 6-4.

 

Guerra, a senior from Tampico, Mexico who is ranked No. 72 in the nation heading into this week’s new rankings, blew away Izabella Glinska, 6-1 and 6-0, at No. 1 singles to raise her mark to 21-7 this season. Guerra and VonStrolley also teamed up for a doubles win to move to 15-8 on the year.

 

No. 5 singles player Lucy Dougherty continued her case for SoCon Freshman of the Year, shutting out Layne Arnold, 6-0 and 6-0, for her ninth win in the last 10 outings and has won 24 straight games after having won by a pair of 6-0 scores in a match against Cal State Bakersfield earlier this week. Dougerty, a native of Melbourne, Australia, is now 4-0 in league play this season.
