GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Furman men’s tennis team remained undefeated in Southern Conference action, defeating the Chattanooga Mocs, 7-0, at the Mickel Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Paladins (13-7, 4-0) rolled to their sixth consecutive victory and have now won 22 straight matches at home. The Mocs dropped to 1-13 overall, 0-6 in league play. The match was forced indoors due to inclement weather.
The Paladins won all three doubles bouts, winning the team doubles point for the sixth straight match. Furman’s Andy Juc and Bo Ladyman improved to 7-0 on the season with an 8-6 win over Peter Sauska and Pavel Vostrikova at the top doubles position. Jordan Walters and Andrei Chvetsov also remained undefeated, topping Rick van de Bovenkamp and Gordon Rudell, 8-2, for the tandem’s fourth win of the year. Chris Motes and Chris Rhyne pulled out an 8-7 (5) win over Alexandru Butnarcuic and Dakota Pate.
In singles action, Daniel Knause and Sawyer Duncan lost only one game apiece in their respective singles matches. Duncan is an impressive 16-2 on the season. Juc, the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, defeated Sauska, 6-3, 6-3, for his fifth consecutive win. Motes and Walters also picked up wins for the Paladins.
Elon 4, North Florida 3
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? Philip Nemec, Chase Helpingstine and Cody Stauffer MacDowell all fashioned singles wins as Elon edged North Florida 4-3 in a nonconference men’s tennis clash ? the Phoenix’s 10th victory in a row and 12th triumph in 13 contests ? Wednesday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
Nemec defeated Ronnie Sang 7-6, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, Helpingstine dispatched Graham Edgar 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 and Stauffer MacDowell ousted Marc Misanovic' 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6. The Ospreys (9-6) received singles wins from Federico Levi (over No. 66 Damon Gooch 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1), Marcos Chiaretti (over Alberto Rojas 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4) and Kurt Gattiker (over Carlin Murray 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at No. 5).
Elon (13-4) claimed the doubles point when Murray and Helpingstine outlasted Chiaretti and Gattiker 8-6 at No. 2 doubles while Stauffer MacDowell and Rojas topped Edgar and Sang 8-5 at No. 3. North Florida posted a victory at No. 1 doubles when Levi and Misanovic' outdueled the No. 48 tandem of Gooch and Nemec 8-7 (8-6).
The Ospreys hit the road to face Atlantic Sun Conference foe East Tennessee State at 2:30 p.m Friday. The Phoenix will welcome visiting No. 56 Radford to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center 2 p.m. Sunday.
