Davidson 6, Wofford 1

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. -­ Davidson took wins in five of the six singles positions on its way to scoring a 6-1 home decision over the Wofford Terriers on Wednesday afternoon at the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center in Southern Conference action.

 

The Wildcats evened their league mark at 2-2 and improved to 6-8 overall, while the Terriers fell to 1-3 in SoCon action and 2-9 overall.

 

For the second time in the past three matches, Davidson started off by scoring the doubles point after earning wins at No. 1 and 3. Leading the way was senior Michele Fanney and junior Virginia Berry, who teamed up for the first time this year and netted an 8-1 win over Ashley Lawrence and Cayley Wetzig.

 

The duo then led five Wildcats to singles wins by scoring their sixth and ninth wins, respectively, in singles play to carry Davidson to the 6-1 win.

 

Fanney ran her conference mark to 3-1 with a three-set win over Wetzig at No. 1. The senior took the first set, before dropping a tie breaker in the second set. Fanney closed out the match with a 6-3 triumph in the third set.

 

Berry remained unbeaten in league matches by taking a straight set (6-1, 6-2) decision over Lawrence at No. 2. The junior is a team-best 9-5 on the season in dual singles matches.

 

Also scoring singles wins on the afternoon was No. 4 Ali Gores, No. 5 Molly McDevitt and No. 6 Samantha Galainena. All three players earned their fifth singles wins overall in the season and second in league play as they each scored straight set wins.

 

Sabrina Smyers scored the Terriers lone point as she broke Alison Rauh?s season-best three-match winning streak with a 6-3, 6-4 decision at the No. 3 position.

 

 

Furman 7, Western Carolina 0

 

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Furman women’s tennis team won its fifth consecutive match and remained unbeaten in the Southern Conference with a 7-0 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts on Wednesday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center. The match was played indoors due to inclement weather. The Lady Paladins improved to 7-6 overall, 3-0 in league action while extending their SoCon regular-season winninng streak to 91 matches. Western Carolina dropped to 4-10, 0-4 in the SoCon.

 

Furman dropped only two games in the three doubles matches to earn the team doubles point. Brooke Mosteller and Jessica Preeg teamed together for the first time this season, posting a shutout win against Emily Turke and Jennifer Brazelton at number three. Laura Gioia and Monica Arguello won their fifth consecutive match with an 8-1 defeat of Amanda Massey and Ainhoa Iglesias at the top position.

 

In singles action, Arguello and Lauren Tomory extended their team-best winning streaks to eight straight with victories at position two and five, respectively. Gioia improved to 10-4 on the season, losing only one game in her victory over Izabella Glinska at number one. Freshman Susan Bitetti topped Chelsea Best, 6-0, 6-2, and rookie Mosteller earned her first career SoCon win with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Turke.

 

 

UNC Greensboro 6, Cal State Bakersfield 1

 

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? UNC Greensboro won five of six singles matches in easy straight-set fashion on its way to a 6-1 win Wednesday afternoon over Cal State Bakersfield at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

 

Alejandra Guerra won her 20th match of the season, raising her mark to 20-7. The junior from Tampico, Mexico has won eight straight matches after downing Nefeli Diamanti, 6-0 and 6-1, on Wednesday. She is 8-2 in the spring season.

 

Freshman Lucy Dougherty also ran her mark to 13-8 on the year with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Sara Mijwel, her eighth win in her last nine outings. Also logging wins in singles play were Arielle VonStrolley, Valerie Behr and Britney Cloer.

 

UNCG (7-4) returns to action on Friday when the Spartans visit Charlotte.
