SoCon Announces Men's Outdoor Track and Field Awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Western Carolina track athlete Manteo Mitchell has been named Southern Conference Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week while Appalachian State triple jumper Mark Sturgis has been named Field Athlete of the Week for all meets from March 19-25, the league office announced Thursday. Voting is conducted by the league's head outdoor track and field coaches.

 

Mitchell, running at the UNC Charlotte 49er Classic last weekend in Charlotte, ran a 46.53 in the prelims of the 400-meter dash and 21.25 in the prelims of the 200-meter dash to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. The senior was also a part of the 4x100-meter relay (41.18) and 4x400-meter relay (3:11.39) squads that claimed titles at the event.

 

Sturgis won the triple jump at the Wake Forest Invitational with a regional qualifying jump of 50?. 

 

Also nominated for this week’s track award were The Citadel’s Jamel Brown and Davidson’s Thad Sieracki.

 

Also nominated for this week’s field award were Western Carolina’s Jamie VanPelt and Wofford’s Carter Blanche.
