Men
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's track and field began its 2009 outdoor campaign on a solid note as the Mountaineers posted impressive performances over the weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational.
In the 100-meter dash, senior Mark Sturigs led the way for ASU, placing seventh with a time of 11.10, while John Svoboda, DeSean Pearce and Phillip Bush notched the ninth, 12th and 14th-place finishes. Svoboda also finished 13th in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the 400-meter run.
NickO'Keefe came in 17th in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.49, while Josh Houser finished seventh in the 1500-meter run with at time of 3:56.00.
Freshman Sean Soderman paced ASU in the 5000-meter run, placing ninth with a time of 15:08.16.
Daniel Neal posted a solid performance in the 110-meter hurdles, taking home fourth with a time of 15.04, while Bush came in ninth and Matt Boruff finished tenth.
In the high jump freshman Darius Purcell captured first place, jumping 6-7?, while teammate Matt Pfingst finished tied for seventh.
Ryan Twiford and Mike Wilson led ASU in the pole vault, both vaulting 14-7?, placing tied for fifth and tied for seventh overall.
Mark Sturgis earned a first-place finish in the triple jump, leaping 50-0? and Ricky Harris placed sixth with a leap of 44-10?.
In the long jump, Bush came in sixth, jumping 22-2? and Sturgis eighth.
Malcolm Styers threw a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 53-5?, moving him into fifth all-time in the event, while Jerod Gardner and Jared Stalling notched eighth and tenth place-finishes, respectively.
Rounding out the meet, Tim Daly placed sixth in the hammer throw, while Styers and Gardner took the home seventh and eighth-place spots.
The Mountaineers return to action Friday March 27, as they head to Raleigh, N.C., to compete at the Raleigh Relays.
Women
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's track and field began its 2009 outdoor campaign on an impressive note as numerous Mountaineers posted solid performances over the weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational.
In the 100-meter dash, Crystal Dukes paced Appalachian running the event in 12.49 and coming in fourth, while Nadia Liriano came in 21st in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.01.
Asia Dunlap and Lynda Hiller led the way for the Black and Gold in the 400-meter dash, placing 10th and 12th overall with times of 58.10 and 58.47.
Jen Povick was impressive in the 1500-meter run, recording a new personal best time of 4:33.37, good enough to move her into fifth on ASU's all-time list in the event. Teammate Meg Gaffney posted a 12th-place finish in the event.
In the 10,000-meter run, Ashley Norris took home a fifth-place finish with a time of 38:56.79. while Natalie Shaw and Kelsey Hanger grabbed eighth and tenth-place finishes in the event, respectively.
Sophomores Michelle Brutus and Kiara Crutchfield capped off the running events for the Black and Gold, as the two earned the eighth and 14th-place spots in the 100-meter hurdles.
Rebecca Hazeltine continued with her dominance in the high jump, as the sophomore jumped 5-7? a new personal best, putting her at fifth on ASU's all-time list in the event. Julie Ward placed tenth in the event, while Bridgette Hills finished tied for 11th.
In the pole vault, Shea Snow and Ashley Beale finished tied for third with a vault of 11-5?. Beale's vault was a personal best, and is good enough to put her at fifth on the all-time list. Ward notched a ninth-place finish in the pole vault.
In the jumping events, Crutchfield came in third in the long jump with a leap of 18-4?, while Bianca Harvey finished tenth with a jump of 17-7. In the triple jump, junior Danielle Thorpe captured first place, jumping 40-0?, while Harvey came in sixth.
Whitney Smyre was impressive in the throwing events, finishing 13th in the shot put, seventh in the discus and fifth in the hammer. Her hammer throw of 157-4 was a new personal best, and moves her into sixth all-time in the event. Teammate Lily Tallent had a strong outing as well, finishing 15th in the discus and 11th in the javelin, while teammate Michaela McGriff recorded a new personal best throw of 149-10 in the hammer, putting her at 10th on ASU's all-time list in the event.
ASU returns to action Friday March 27, as the Apps head to Raleigh, N.C. to compete at the Raleigh Relays.
College of Charleston
Day 1
CONWAY, S.C. ? The College of Charleston track and field team took part in the competition at the first day of the annual Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina on Friday.
Top finishers on the day for the Cougars included Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C.) who finished second in the high jump with a 1.70 meter effort and Kristen Wolfe (Midlothian, Va.), who set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:27.80 to finish second.
Teammate Grace Loba (Orean, Va.) finished right behind Wolfe, with a third-place finish in a time of 11:40.83.
Other top finishers included Ariel Hatcher (Monroe, Mich.) who qualified for tomorrow’s 100-meter finals with a time of 12.42, Jessica Cumbee (Awendaw, S.C.) who placed 13th in the pole vault with a 3.20 meter effort and Isabel Boersma (Franklin, Tenn.), who ran the 100-meter hurdles in 16.07 to place 22nd.
On the men’s side, Christian Bailey (Charlotte, N.C.) finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:33.90, while David Lamberson (Stafford, Va.) finished 11th in 16:00.11 and Eric Robertson (Dalzell, S.C.) placed 15th in 16:16.68.
Action at the Shamrock Invitational will continue tomorrow.
Day 2
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The College of Charleston track and field teams competed in the annual Shamrock Invitational this weekend. The event was hosted by Coastal Carolina University.
In the team's final day of competition today, Alyssa D'Orazio set a school-record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.56 to place seventh in the event. In the long jump, Isabel Boersma placed fifth with a 5.03-meter effort, while Saskia Kalmeijer posted a 10.41-meter effort in the triple jump in her return from an injury.
In the 100-meters finals, Ariel Hatcher finished 15th with a time of 12.61 after qualifying for the finals with a school-record time of 12.42 yesterday. In the 400-meter dash, Mary Zolga placed 12th in a time of 58.64, while Kristen Wolfe placed 12th in the 1500-meters in a time of 4:57.52.
Erin Stoddard earned a sixth place finish in the 3,000-meters in a time of 10:21.53, while Becky Stewart also placed in the top ten in the event in eighth with a time of 10:37.65.
On the men's side, Timothy Faugl placed eighth in the 1500-meter run in 4:15.07, while Christian Bailey placed 10th in the event with a time of 4:15.57.
Yesterday in the team's first day of competition, Wolfe set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:27.80 to finish second, while teammate Grace Loba finished right behind Wolfe in third place in a time of 11:40.83.
On the men's side, Bailey was the day's top finisher, placing sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:33.90.
The Cougars return to action on Mar. 27th at the Raleigh Relays.
The Citadel
Charleston, S.C. ? Bulldog graduate student Jamel Brown won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.47 and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA East Regional as The Citadel track and field team competed in the three-day Shamrock Invitational on March 19-21 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Brown’s time meets the NCAA qualifying time of 52.51 for the 400 hurdles and he tops his 2008 SoCon Champion and personal record time of 53.42. Brown also broke the school record running pass Tony Brevard’s 1990 time of 52.91. Brown ran the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.34 to advance to the finals. He ran a final time of 14.89 for ninth place in the meet.
Brendan Kight won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:33.88, running the fourth-fastest time in school history and earning a personal-best record. Kight took fifth in the 3000-meter with a personal-best time of 9:01.92 clinching the sixth all-time record. Chris Fallis came in right behind Kight finishing sixth with a personal-best of 9:04.42 for the eighth spot in The Citadel’s top 10 list.
Brillyance Gilchrist-Poteat broke the freshman record in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.60 in the preliminaries advancing to the finals. She finished for 14th with a time of 15.67.
Brian Baize finished fourth in the men’s decathlon tallying 5,926 points. Baize also set personal best times in eight of 10 events. Zach Johnson ran a time of 1:57.41 for fourth place in the 800-meter run. Frank Dioguardi, Christopher Morgan, Fallis and Johnson ran the men’s 4x800-meter relay ran for a fourth-place finish with a time of 7:56.14. This time is the 10th best time in school history.
Quintin Turner finished fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 145-6 and Dioguardi took sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.80. Joe Tkach followed for eighth with a time of 2:00.00. Sarah Stickland recorded a time of 12:04.27 for a sixth-place finish in the 3000 steeplechase.
James Harris finished fifth in the high jump with a personal record of 6-6?. This mark puts him tied for seventh all-time. Jodi Whittle ran a time of 1:06.76 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish 10th and Sarah Stierwalt set a personal-best record in the 5000-meter run with a time of 19:20.36 to finish 13th and earn the fifth all-time spot in The Citadel’s top 10 list.
Francesca McCrary ran a personal-best in the 400-meter hurdles for the fourth all-time record with a time of 1:10.73 for 19th place. Freshman Theresa Johansen threw a 122-2 mark in her debut in the hammer. Johansen is fifth all-time with her 17th-place finish.
Brown will compete in the NCAA East Regional at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C., on May 23.
The Bulldogs will participate in the Georgia Southern Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. on Saturday, March 28.
Davidson
Men
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Senior Thad Sieracki set a new school outdoor record in the 3,000-meters to lead the Davidson men’s track & field team in their first outdoor meet of the season, the Charlotte 49er Classic, held at Irwin Belk Track.
Sieracki broke a school record for the second consecutive meet with his 8:32.47 mark in the 3,000-meters, bettering the previous best time by over three seconds. His performance was good for a runner-up finish in the event. Classmate Alex Hoyt also brought home a top five finish, placing fifth with a time of 8:34.85.
“We had a great weekend overall,” said Wildcat head coach Gary Andrews. “With the strong performances, we’re building on the momentum we established at the indoor conference championships.”
The ?Cats placed three runners in the top ten at 1,500-meters, led by Sieracki’s second top-five of the weekend, a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:54.35, which placed him in the top ten marks in school history. Hoyt also joined him on the all-time list, tripping the tape in 3:56.13 and finishing in seventh place. Rounding out the top ten was Peter Bruton’s time of 3:59.50, good for tenth.
In the Steeplechase, the top ten finishers included a pair of Wildcats, with Blake Evitt coming in eighth (10:02.84), and Ian Tupper notching a tenth place finish in his first career outdoor meet, traversing the course in 10:09.59.
Sophomore Bryce Jones set a new personal-best height in the pole vault with his 3.85 meter jump, which gave him a tie for 12th place in the event and was good for addition to the school’s all-time top-ten list.
Davidson found success in the throws on the weekend, with senior Will Funderburg bringing home a pair of top-tens. Funderburg finished in eighth in the discuss with a throw of 42.67 meters, and was ninth in the shot put (14.47 meters).
The ?Cats will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take part in the Weems Baskin Relays, hosted by the University of South Carolina on March 28.
Women
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Senior Kennesia Martin finished second and broke her own school record in the triple jump as the Wildcat women's track and field team opened the outdoor season at the Charlotte 49er Classic over the weekend.
Martin finished with the runner-up mark of 11.70 meters. She previously jumped a school-best standard of 11.54 meters in 2007.
In the sprints, classmate Kim Colley finished 25th (12.71) in the 100-meter dash and 26th (25.93) in the 200-meter dash.
Freshman Danielle Wright placed 31st in the 200 with a time of 26.83 and also competed in the 400-meter dash, finishing 21st with a time of 1:00.99.
Classmate Brooke Senken finished with a team-best time of 5:04.19 (37th) in the 1,500-meter run, followed closely by sophomore Sarah Cline (40th, 5:05.86).
In the 5,000-meters, sophomore Heather Conarroe placed sixth with a time of 17:59.99, while classmate Danielle Ruggieri (eighth, 18:11.02) and senior Emily King (ninth, 18:24.64) were right behind.
After setting the school record in the shot put at the indoor Southern Conference championships, senior Kittery Neale placed seventh in the event with a mark of 11.65 meters.
The Wildcats will return to action Saturday, traveling to Columbia, S.C. for the Weems Baskin Relay.
Furman
ATLANTA, Ga. ? Furman’s Patrick Morgan and Monique Ositelu both turned in second-place finishes to lead the Paladin men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Emory Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The meet was the first outdoor meet of the season for the Paladins.
Morgan raced to a second-place finish in the 1500-meter run, crossing the finish line in 3:50.65. The senior has had an amazing final year, breaking a school record in the indoor mile, and finishing in the top 10 in every event he has run this year. Freshman Lee Gilmer performed well in his first outdoor meet. Gilmer ran a 1:57.11 in the 800-meter run, good for a third-place finish. The rookie also took eighth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:00.77. Paladin sophomore Charles McGoogan posted a top-10 finish, coming in ninth in the 5000-meter run.
On the women’s side, Ositelu ran a 2:15.79 in the 800, crossing the finish line in second place. Freshman Chloe Kowalski was the top Paladin finisher in the 5000-meter run, coming in eighth with a time of 18:45.63. Rookie Charlee Coggins came in 10th in the same event with a time of 18:47.13.
The Furman track and field will travel to Baton Rouge, La., to participate in the LSU Relays on Friday and Saturday, March 27-28.
Georgia Southern
Day 1
CONWAY, S.C. - The Georgia Southern track & field team finished the first full day of competition at the Shamrock Invitational on a strong note Friday.
Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) got the Eagles started off on the right foot with a first-place finish in the long jump. Anthony pulled away from the competition with a mark of 5.88 meters. The junior also qualified for the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 12.16 in the preliminaries.
Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) gave Georgia Southern another top-10 finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Lee finished with a time of 12:45.36 in the event.
Alexandria Cassagnol (Augusta, Ga.) finished seventh in the high jump with a jump of 1.55 meters.
Brittani Martin (Alpharetta, Ga.) completed the 5000-meter run in just over 20 minutes. The freshman runner came in 20th with a time of 20:35.58.
Tiara Bivins (Court Bonaire, Ga.) narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 100-meter hurdles finals. Bivins finished 27th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.32.
Track & field will continue the Shamrock Invitational tomorrow morning on the campus of Coastal Carolina.
Day 2
CONWAY, S.C. - Georgia Southern track & field completed the Shamrock Invitational Saturday.
Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) qualified for the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 12.16 and came in ninth in the finals with a time of 12.22. The Manchester native finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.86.
Biebele Benson-Jaja (Savannah, Ga.) finished 11th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.61.
Morgan Jefferson (Villa Rica, Ga.) finished 16th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.20
Courtney Ware (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished 16th in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:09.49.
Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) finished 10th in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:45.35.
The Eagles added another top-10 finish in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 49.31. Georgia Southern finished ninth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:07.44.
Alexandria Cassagnol (Augusta, Ga.) finished seventh in the High Jump with a jump 1.55 meters.
Track & field returns home to host the Eagle Invitational Saturday at Eagle Field.
UNC Greensboro
Day 1
WINSTON-SALEM, NC ? AJ Savio finished seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as UNC Greensboro opened the 2009 outdoor track & field season at the Wake Forest Open on Friday.
Savoia led a strong Spartan effort in the steeplechase as UNCG had three finishes in the top-15. Savoia’s time of 9:47.55 was the fourth fastest in that event in school history.
Taylor Hurst was also a top performer for the Spartans on Friday. His time of 1:55.21 in the 800-meter run was also the fourth fastest time in school history and it broke his personal best by 0.42 seconds.
Kerry Hartman led the women with her 24th place finish in the 800. She ran a time of 2:20.56, which was the third fastest time in school history.
The Spartans will return to Wake Forest on Saturday for the second day of competition.

Day 2
WINSTON-SALEM, NC ? Freshman Joey Thompson won the 3,000-meter race at day two of the Wake Forest Open on Saturday afternoon to break the school record by over seven seconds.
Thompson’s time of 8:31.25 was good enough for first place by almost two seconds. His time also broke the previous school record by 7.17 seconds.
Sherrika Jordan also had a nice showing for the Spartans. Her time of 4:45.95 in the 1,500-meters was the second fastest time in school history and was just under a second behind the school record.
Tiffany Garber finished eighth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:33.67. That was good enough for the third-best time in school history.
The Spartans will return to competition next weekend as they head to Raleigh, NC for the Raleigh Relays on Friday and Saturday.

Chattanooga
ATHENS, Ga. --- The Chattanooga men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the outdoor season Saturday at the Georgia Relays and grabbed five top five finishes.
The Lady Mocs’ 4x800-meter relay team of Lauran Anderson, Anneli Uys, Emily Wood and Monika Groppe finished second with a time of 9:13.34. In the women’s Distance Medley Relay team, Anderson, Uys, Wood and Tara Gietema, was second behind Georgia with a time of 12:08.69.
In the men’s relays, the Mocs took fifth in the 4x800 and ran two teams in the distance medley relay placing fifth and sixth. Michael Danehy, Josh Vasquez, Chris Berry and Blake Ketron ran the 4x800 in a time of 7:57.95.
Vasquez, Danehy, Berry and Moore finished fifth in the DMR with a time of 10:24.34 followed by the Mocs other DMR team of Ketron, Stephen George, Matt Baltimore and Thurman in sixth place.
David Moore was fifth in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:49.55 followed by teammate Allen Thurman in seventh with a time of 10:02.59.
Jordyn Radke had top 10 finishes in both the 1500-meter run (4:57.50) and the women’s 3000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 11:52.50.
The track teams will return to action Saturday, March 28 at the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta.
Western Carolina
Charlotte, N.C. - The Western Carolina Men's and Women's Track & Field teams opened up the 2009 Outdoor season with a solid showing over this past weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic at Irwin Belk Track in Charlotte, N.C.
In the women's side, sophomore Felicia Paulding took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.47. Janet Carothers followed Paulding's lead taking first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.67.
In the 800-meter run Megan Isaacs took a fifth place finish with a time of 2:16.82 falling six seconds from first place.
Western Carolina women's relay teams had a very impressive performance placing second on the 4x100-meter and first in the 4x400-meter relay on the weekend.
In the women's Pole Vault event Kassie McKie earned a fourth-place finish jumped 10 feet four inches.
Junior Tiana Jones also placed four in the Long Jump event jumping 18 feet one and a half inches. Jones also placed third in the Triple Jump Event jumping 38 feet three and a half inches.
In the women's Hammer Throw event sophomore Chelsey McLean throw 145 feet to place third.
On the men's side, junior Dominique Young placed fourth in the 100-meter dash event with a time of 10.86 to starts things off for the Catamounts.
Senior Manteo Mitchell placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.35 falling just a mere .30 seconds of first place.
The Catamounts men's relay teams took two first place finishes with one in the 4x100-meter relay and the other in the 4x400-meter relay.
Junior Matt Evans took a first place finish in the High Jump event with a jump of 6 feet 8.75 inches.
In the men's Pole Vault event junior Michael Osteen took a second-place finish with a jump of 15 feet and one inch.
In the men's discuss event freshman Jamie Van Pelt took a first-place finish in his first collegiate event with a throw of 46.02 meters.
The Catamounts return to action next weekend to participate in the Asics Winthrop Invitational hosted by Winthrop University on March 26-28.
Wofford
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Wofford men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams opened the 2009 outdoor season over the weekend at the Charlotte 49ERS Classic hosted by Charlotte University. This was the first of five meets on the outdoor schedule before concluding the season at the Southern Conference Championships on April 24 and 25th.
In the women’s 3000-meter run, freshman Caroline Burdette had a solid showing finishing with a time of 11:30.22, good enough for 14th place out of 30 participants. Justina Oliva paced the Terriers in the 5000-meter run as she finished in 24th position with a time of 20:16.96.
On the men’s side, Elias Conits had a good result in the men’s 100-meter dash as he finished with a time of 11.06 placing him 19th out of 62 competitors. Conits also had a good showing in the long jump as he placed 17th with a jump of 6.36 meters.
In the men’s 3000-meter run, Bryan Brooks led the way with a time 9:33.26 putting him in the 23rd position. Mavrick Harris was hot on the heels of Brooks as he finished the 3000 in the 24th position with a time of 9:33.85.
The best finish of the day for the Terriers came in the men’s Javelin throw where Carter Blanche finished 8th in the preliminaries and improved his finish up to seventh with a throw of 54.62 meters setting a new school record.
The Terriers return to the track on March 28 at Winthrop University.
