SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston freshman Caroline Newman has been named Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches from March 16-22, the league office announced Tuesday. Newman finished 4-1 in singles competition and 4-1 in doubles play as the Cougars went 6-0 last week.  The Player of the Week award is voted on by the league’s sports information directors.

Newman opened the week with a win over Jacksonville State’s Rafalia Wenzel (6-2, 6-0) at No. 3 singles where she was 2-1 last week.  Newman’s three-set victory (6-7, 6-3, 7-5) over Minnesota’s Nitooli Wilkins at No. 2 singles helped the Cougars top the nationally-ranked Golden Gophers, 4-3.  The Greensboro, N.C., native secured a 6-2, 6-2 victory over UNC Greensboro’s Valerie Behr at No. 3 singles as part of CofC’s 4-3 win over the Spartans.  Newman is now 14-5 on the season in singles competition for the Cougars (17-3, 5-0 SoCon), who have won nine straight matches.  She teamed with Holly Dowse to go 4-1 in doubles play last week.

Also nominated for this week’s award was Davidson’s Michele Fanney, Elon’s Anna Milian, Furman’s Laura Gioia, Georgia Southern’s Melanie Rolle, UNC Greensboro’s Alejandra Guerra and Samford’s Andrie Meiring.
